Zahawi thanked his 

constituents yesterday 

(Monday) for the letters 

he received supporting 

his stance against Diane 

Abbott amid last week’s 

Twitter race row. 

Mr Zahawi called for Labour 

leader Ed Miliband to sack Ms 

Abbott, the first black female 

MP, after she said on social 

network site Twitter: “White 

people love playing ‘divide & 

rule’.” 

Mr Miliband did not fire his 

shadow Health Secretary, but 

instead forced her to make a public 

apology for the remark. 

Yesterday, Mr Zahawi, an Iraqi 

Kurd, told the Midweek Herald: “I 

am disappointed that she hasn’t done 

the honourable thing and resigned, 

and I’m disappointed that Ed 

Miliband hasn’t sacked her.” 

It now looks as if Ms Abbott has 

kept her job, but Mr Zahawi said: 

“From the number of letters that I 

have had from Stratfordians in support 

of my position, I don’t think 

that this has gone away. It will 

reflect badly on Ed Miliband and 

badly on her and people will not 

want to elect Diane Abbott into a 

cabinet.”

Three-on-one 

attack: teenager 

is arrested 

A TEENAGER has been arrested in connection 

with a three-on-one attack in Bridge Street, Stratford, 

in the early hours of Saturday. 

Three attackers knocked another man to the ground and 

then continued to kick and punch him while he was on the 

floor outside Lloyds TSB at 2am. 

Police arrested an 18-year-old man from Shirley, Solihull, 

on suspicion of assault after being alerted to the fight 

by CCTV operators watching the scene unfold. They are 

appealing for witnesses, specifically a group of young 

men who were using the cashpoint at the time. 

The victim, who injured his knee, made his own way to 

hospital for treatment. 

The 18-year-old has been released on police bail 

pending further inquiries.

Hospitals’ 

assurance 

on implants 

NHS hospitals in Warwickshire have reassured 

women that banned breast implants were not used in 

their hospitals, writes Matt Wilson. 

University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire 

(formerly Walsgrave Hospital) and Warwick Hospital 

confirmed last week the French PIP implants that 

have a high risk of rupture had not been used in NHS 

surgeries in the area. 

Banned in 2010, the implants, made by French firm 

Poly Implant Prothese, use industrial, rather than 

medical silicon gel. French authorities claim the rate 

of rupture is five per cent. 

Around 40,000 women across Britain have the 

implants and on Friday, Health Secretary, Andrew 

Lansley said patients fitted with PIP implants on the 

NHS would have them replaced. But last week University 

Hospital and Warwick Hospital issued a joint 

statement with St Cross Hospital in Rugby, and 

George Eliot in Nuneaton, reassuring women that the 

cheaper implants were not given to women on the 

NHS in Coventry and Warwickshire. 

Some private cosmetic surgery companies did use 

the PIP implants, including Harley Medical Group, 

who yesterday insisted their records showed only 1.3 

per cent of implants ruptured within four years of 

being fitted.

County council backs locals’ plan to 

take over community centre

WARWICKSHIRE County Council has 

agreed in principle to a community bid to 

enhance and expand the activities at Warwick 

Community Centre. 

The building, in Coten End, is threatened 

with closure as the county youth service is 

cut back, will instead be re-animated by 

local groups, with a strong focus on the arts. 

Already the home for a thriving preschool 

and clubs serving disabled people, 

the locally managed centre will be promoting 

its range of spaces to host everything 

from life classes to knitting, dance 

and fitness to bridge. The steering group is 

keen to help strengthen the capacity of 

clubs catering for the needs of the young 

and vulnerable, as well as supporting new 

initiatives. 

To achieve this, the steering group would 

like to draw upon the skills, enthusiasm and 

charity of Warwick people who are able to 

commit some support to the project. To find

sending 

the bags, 

please’ 

TRADING standards officers 

have appealed for the 

public to stop sending in 

examples of clothing collection 

bags after being overwhelmed 

by the response. 

Huge numbers of bags 

were sent in after Warwickshire 

Trading Standards Service 

asked for examples in a 

recent blitz on potentially 

unscrupulous collectors. 

Hundreds have already 

been sent in and officers 

continue to receive more 

each week. They now have 

the details of around 50 different 

collectors operating 

across the county. 

The collection phase of 

the blitz has now ended and 

the investigation phase is 

now well under way. 

Trading standards officers 

therefore no longer need 

residents to send in collection 

bags but would like to 

thank everyone who helped 

to get the project off to such 

an excellent start. 

Many of the bags have 

been identified as perfectly 

legitimate, but others are 

under investigation. 

The trading standards 

service relies on reports 

from members of the public 

about issues of concern to 

consumers enabling the 

service to target its efforts to 

where they are most needed.

tell a good yarn 

TWO local care homes want to hear from people in Stratford who can spin a good yarn to join in Bupa’s 

plans to mark National Storytelling Week. 

Bupa’s homes at Canning 

Court, in Stratford, and at 

Alveston Leys, in Alveston, 

will be hosting special community 

storytelling events 

in January and are appealing 

for storytellers to bring 

tales and fables to life. 

Celebrated each year, 

National Storytelling Week 

(28th January to 4th February) 

aims to increase 

awareness of the value of 

sharing stories. 

This is the second year 

Bupa will be marking the 

week, where a similar 

appeal last year saw hundreds 

of local people across 

the UK step forward to help 

care home residents enjoy a 

week of classic storytelling.

Aiding victims 

of human 

rights abuse 

STRATFORD Amnesty International has marked 

the 63rd anniversary of the United Nations Declaration 

of Human Rights with a renewed effort to 

aid victims of human rights abuses. 

The local group teamed 

up with members of the 

King Edward VI School 

group to raise awareness 

and funds, and incite the 

townspeople to sign letters 

and cards for individuals at 

risk. 

Letters petitioning various 

government officials 

to enforce the Declaration 

of Human Rights and cards 

from the international community, 

showing messages 

of support to victims, are a 

key part of Amnesty’s 

work in support of human 

rights. 

Bake-sale 

Including the donations 

from a bake-sale on the 

previous day, the groups 

raised over £250 for the 

charity (some of which will 

be used for postage). 

Around 100 appeal letters 

and 200 cards were sent off 

by the groups. 

Write for Rights Day

human rights groups across

action for various prisoners

well-being week 

TAKING health and well being seriously, students and staff 

from Stratford College hosted Well Being Week recently. 

Working in conjunction with external agencies to run 

themed days, the aim of the week was to raise awareness of 

health issues such as drug and alcohol awareness, looking 

after your sexual health and no smoking awareness.

Firm to claim 

costs from 

ex-directors 

A WELLESBOURNE former company director 

and a colleague are facing a costs claim of about 

£5,000 after losing their compensation claims for 

constructive unfair dismissal. 

Nigel Bromley, of Newbold 

Road, Wellesbourne, 

and James Allen, were directors 

of the advertising and 

marketing firm An Agency 

Called England Ltd. 

They made compensation 

claims at a previous Birmingham 

Employment Tribunal 

for constructive unfair 

dismissal against the firm 

after resigning. But the 

claims were struck out 

because they did not have 

enough service. 

Claimants must be an 

employee for a year or more 

before they can make compensation 

claims for unfair 

dismissal. 

At the latest hearing, Tony 

Stanton, the firm’s managing 

director, said he was making 

a costs claim of about £5,000 

against Mr Bromley and Mr 

Allen because their claims 

had been misconceived 

because of the employment 

clause. 

Both Mr Bromley, Mr 

Allen and Mr Stanton said 

they wanted more time to 

prepare their cases. 

Tribunal judge Pam 

Hughes confirmed that the 

claimants’ compensation 

claims had been struck out at 

a previous hearing and suggested 

all three sought more 

legal advice. She adjourned 

the hearing to a later date. 

“The adjournment will 

enable you to either question 

or accept the amount of the 

costs claimed,” she told Mr 

Bromley and Mr Allen. 

Mr Stanton said after the 

hearing that Mr Bromley and 

Mr Allen had both been with 

the firm for only a short time 

before resigning.”

Police respond to 

‘plonkers’ charge 

POLICE have responded to being called 

“plonkers” by a Stratford resident after he witnessed 

a patrol car speeding at 50mph the wrong 

way down the one-way street. 

Resident Frank Pointon 

complained to the police 

that the car drove down 

Albany Road within inches 

of two rows of parked cars 

at a pace that “nearly sent 

an elderly gentleman for 

six.” 

Mr Pointon, who 

believes the car had blue 

lights showing, but no 

siren, said: “I cannot even 

begin to understand the 

mind-set of the plonker 

driving the car. 

“If he/she had reason to 

get to an area of Albany 

Road which was out of my 

sight, then it would have 

been better and quicker to 

have accessed from the 

main road. 

“If a car or other vehicle 

was travelling along 

Albany Road in the legal 

direction the police car 

would have been immediately 

blocked from travelling 

the wrong way, and 

considerably delayed in 

reaching its destination.”

In response to his complaint, 

a spokesperson for 

Warwickshire Police said: 

“Officers responded to a 

report of a male who was 

believed to be suicidal. 

“There were varying 

reports of the male’s whereabouts 

in Stratford and officers 

involved in the search 

for him had to make quick 

decisions regarding routes 

and speed of response. 

“Police officers have to 

comply with the rules of the 

road, but it is possible that 

on this occasion a judgement 

call was made in the 

interest of protecting life. 

“The officers successfully 

located the missing 

male and found him to be 

safe and well.” 

After lodging his complaint, 

he was told the 

police were having difficulty 

identifying the 

vehicle. He said: “What is 

rather disappointing is they 


did not seem willing or able 

to chase the people 

involved.” 

He added: “Given the 

arrogance of such actions I 

attempted to speak with the 

chief constable, and was 

told he doesn’t speak with 

people, and it was a matter 

for professional standards 

[department].” 

Ironically though, days 

after Mr Pointon’s complaint, 

Warwickshire Police 

announced that Chief Constable 

Andy Parker would 

be engaging in an online 

chat with members of the 

public to trial this new way 

of communicating to the 

force.

THIS Christmas, Warwick 

Preparatory School raised 

more than £2,450 for the 

Myton Hospices through 

various fundraising initiatives. 

Nearly 450 pupils from 

reception to Year 6 designed 

their own Christmas cards, 

parents were then given the 

option of buying their 

child’s design in packs of 

12, the proceeds of the sale 

amounted to nearly £800. 

In addition, the school 

raised over £1,650 from collections 

at the carol services 

and the many Christmas 

concerts held over the last 

few weeks of term. 

In total £2,450.49 was 

raised for hospices. Pupils 

from Year 6 also visited the 

Warwick Hospice in the run 

up to Christmas to perform 

on the hand bells which 

brought some festive cheer 

to the residents. 

The charity has three hospices 

in Warwick, Coventry 

and Rugby and helps more 

than 2,000 terminally ill 

people from Coventry and 

Warwickshire and their 

families every year. 

Sara Fenton, from Myton, 

said: “We are thrilled with 

the donation from Warwick 

Prep and would like to 

thank all parents, staff and 

pupils for their wonderful 

support. We need to raise 

more than £6.7 million 

every year through voluntary 

donations and rely on 

support from the local community.”

Man, 25, 

jailed for 

glass assault 

Report by our Warwick Crown 

Court correspondent 

A WARWICK man who hit a hostel resident over 

the head with a glass after being given a suspended 

prison sentence for a similar attack has run 

out of chances. 

Dominic Henry, aged 25, 

of Coton End, pleaded guilty 

at Warwick Crown Court to 

assaulting his victim Craig 

Berry causing him actual 

bodily harm. 

He entered his plea on the 

basis that he had caused the 

injury recklessly by throwing 

the glass which bounced off a 

wall and hit Mr Berry just 

behind his ear. But on the day 

the court was due to hear a 

‘trial of issue,’ Henry 

accepted he had picked up 

the glass and hit Mr Berry 

with it during the incident. 

He was jailed for 18 

months—consecutive to 30 

weeks of a suspended prison 

sentence he was subject to at 

the time. 

Prosecutor Lal Amarasinghe 

said that in May last 

year Mr Berry was living at 

the Binswood Lodge hostel 

in Leamington, but had been 

staying at another address. 

He returned early one 

morning to collect his post, 

and went to another resident’s 

room where that man 

and some friends were 

playing loud music as they 

got themselves some breakfast 

after returning from a 

night out. 

Henry, who was also living 

at the hostel at the time, took 

exception to the volume of 

the music and went into the 

room to complain, becoming 

abusive. 

He complained that he had 

been woken by the music, 

although he was already 

dressed in his work clothes, 

and Mr Berry asked him to 

get out. 

There was some pushing 

between them, and Henry 

picked up a Coca-cola glass 

off the table and struck Mr 

Berry to the head with it, 

causing a cut behind his ear 

which bled. 

Henry left the room, but 

after calling the police Mr 

Berry picked up part of a 

broken pool cue and followed 

him as he left the 

hostel. And on the steps outside 

he struck Henry over the 

head with the cue, just as the 

police turned up, and both 

men were arrested and taken 

to hospital. 

Mr Berry, who has since 

been given a community 

order with 40 hours of unpaid 

work for that assault, refused 

treatment, but Henry had to 

have the injury to his head 

glued. 

Mr Amarasinghe said that 

Henry had previous convictions 

for violence including 

assault and common assault, 

and in April 2010 had been 

sentenced to 36 weeks in 

prison suspended for two 

years for wounding a customer 

in a bar by hitting him 

over the head with a glass. 

Gary Cook, defending, 

said that when he was last in 

prison Henry had begun a 

cookery course which he 

continued after his release 

and got a job as a chef. He 

had tried to pursue the 

problem of noise from his 

fellow residents through the 

proper channels, but to no 

avail, adding: “I ask you to 

take a chance with this young 

man.” 

But Judge Marten Coates 

observed: “It comes down to 

this man being on a suspended 

sentence for using a 

glass—and he’s done it 

again.” 

Jailing Henry, the judge 

told him: “In May last year at 

a probation hostel you 

engaged in an incident of 

violence with another resident

Minister meets 

local community 

energy group 

ENERGY Minister Greg Barker received his first ever 

briefing from a community energy group when he met representatives 

of Community Energy Warwickshire recently at the 

offices of the Department of Energy and Climate Change in 

London. 

The meeting, which had been organised by Warwick and 

Leamington MP Chris White, gave Mr Barker the opportunity 

to hear how Community Energy Warwickshire has linked up 

with South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust in an innovative 

partnership that is seeing solar panels installed on roofs 

at Warwick and Stratford Hospitals. 

Mr Barker has previously described this scheme as “exactly 

the kind of project delivered through exactly the kind of partnership 

that we need to see more of”. And he offered his congratulations 

on hearing progress with the scheme. 

Barbara Cooper and David Wood from Community Energy 

Warwickshire, together with Siobhan Hill, the energy manager 

at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, also 

briefed the Minister on development plans and discussed the 

implications for community energy groups of recent government 

moves to reduce the availability of funding for solar 

panel schemes. 

Community Energy Warwickshire is a community energy 

co-operative that was set up in December 2010 by residents in 

Stratford and Warwick districts to promote local renewable 

energy projects and energy saving schemes. 

Volunteering Opportunities 

Volunteers are needed for the following roles: 

Voluntary Action Stratford-on-Avon District – Volunteer Drivers. Do you have the time, care 

and patience to become a Volunteer Driver? This essential service provides transport to 

hospitals, doctors, day centres and is a lifeline to many people. An allowance of 45p per mile is 

paid for authorised journeys. 

Age UK Warwickshire – Administration Volunteer. To support the Care Services Lifestyle 

Team at Briar Croft, a volunteer is needed to carry out office duties including: responding to 

enquiries, signposting clients, preparing client folders, preparing for team meetings, making up 

information packs and ordering stationery. 

West Warwickshire Scout District – Leaders and Helpers. With groups in Alcester, Bearley, 

Earlswood, Henley, Salford Priors, Studley, Tanworth, Wilmcote and Wootton Wawen, volunteers 

with good communication skills, a sense of humour and fun and a willingness to ‘have a go’ are 

needed. Training and support provided. 

Barnardo’s – Independent Visitors. Volunteers are needed to befriend children/young people 

in residential care/foster homes, to provide them with contact, support and encouragement. 

Volunteers need to commit to monthly visits over a period of 2 years. 

The Buzz Community Café – Business Administrator. An experienced administrator is needed 

to give around 10 hours support per week, dealing with the day-to-day business dealings of the 

cafe, including post and emails. 

Warwickshire Children and Voluntary Youth Services – Treasurer. The umbrella body for 

voluntary children and youth organisations in the County, WCVYS is looking for a Treasurer to 

maintain an overview of its financial affairs. The Treasurer will need a strong financial 

background, preferably with an accounting qualification.

HENLEY and Beaudesert residents are so disillusioned 

with their parish council, they have set up a 

rival group who will contest all 12 council positions 

in this year’s election. 

Under one banner of 

‘Henley Independents’, the 

group are hoping to clear 

out and reform the council 

described last year by a 

standards and ethics committee 

as “dysfunctional.” 

The formation of Henley 

Independents was 

announced this week by 

chairman Mike Willmott. 

He said: “I believe that the 

people of Henley and 

Beaudesert deserve an 

inclusive and representative 

joint parish council 

that both represents all the 

residents of the town, and 

works for the benefit of the 

town itself. 

“We have an outstanding 

range of candidates who 

will bring their considerable 

experience and 

expertise to the table— 

these are people who want 

to make a difference to the 

way Henley is run and are 

not simply in it for their 

own personal gain.” 

The group has around 

100 supporters at the 

moment, but Mr Willmott 

told the Herald support was 

growing by the day. 

The elections are on 3rd 

May, but the Independents 

have begun the campaigning 

process: “We will 

be working hard to develop 

and promote our campaign 

over the coming months,”

And in May 2010, there 

was a referendum in 

Henley parish on the “Confidence 

in the leadership 

management of the JPC”. 

The council lost this vote 

of confidence. 

Cllr Roger Hubbocks, 

chairman of Henley Parish 

Council told the Herald 

that although he would like 

to comment, the council 

had not had an opportunity 

to discuss the new revelations. 

Parish council elections 

occur once every four 

years. Henley residents 

elect seven councillors, 

and five are elected in 

Beaudesert.

to park and with good fuel consumption then the Mini 

Cooper S All4 Countryman could fit the bill. 

With a length of just over 4 metres, and rear parking

in the event of the death or failure of its

The Council, on 5 December 2011, formally adopted amendments to the 

above Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). 

Any persons aggrieved by the amendments to the SPD may apply to the 

High Court for permission to apply for judicial review of the decision to 

adopt them. Any such application for leave must be made promptly and 

in any event not later than 3 months after the date on which the 

amendments to the SPD were adopted. 

The purpose of the amendments is to update the list of schemes identified 

in the SPD for which developer contributions are collected in accordance 

with the provisions of the SPD. 

Copies of the SPD and adopted amendments, together with a statement 

of consultation and this adoption statement are available for inspection at

Dunlop by 76 points to nil at Peacrecroft on Saturday. The 

win was their fourth of the season and lifts them into 10th 

place in the Midlands 1 West table. 

In Midlands 3 West (South), Shipston slip into third spot 

after they lost 25-22 at Old Coventrians. There was no joy 

for Southam either as they went down 10-7 at Kings

Harbury are up to third in Midlands 4 West (South) following
