Transport assistants that look after school children as young as four were being axed as part of cuts to school transport, saving the council £1.4 million. Parents were relieved their children’s safety had been taken into account, after more than 6,800 people sign-ed a petition against the cuts. Yvette McEwan, who relies on the chaperone serving Tredington Primary School because her fiveyear-old daughter, Francesca, has cystic fibrosis, said: “I am very happy, very relieved. DNA from the bones has been matched with that of descendants of the monarch’s family. The skeleton had suffered ten injuries, including eight to the skull. The king was maligned by Shakespeare as a wicked, ugly hunchback in his play Richard III, a characterisation now seen as pro-Tudor propaganda. He was 32 when he died at Bosworth, the last battle in the War of the Roses. The victor was Henry Tudor, later crowned Henry VII, grandfather of Elizabeth I, who was Queen at the time Shakespeare wrote the play. Having married Anne Neville, daughter of Richard Neville, the 16th Earl of Warwick, Richard III automatically became the owner of Warwick Castle. He commissioned the building of a new keep or gun tower on the north wall of the castle which is known as Clarence Tower but did not live to see it completed.

new £1.26m station footbridge<br />

STRATFORD residents and rail users are being<br />
asked to choose their favourite design for a new<br />
£1.26 million footbridge at the town’s railway<br />
station.<br />
It is hoped the new footbridge will provide<br />
better access to the platforms, and allay fears<br />
about the future of the station ahead of the new<br />
£8.8 million <strong>Stratford</strong> parkway station, due to<br />
open in Bishopton in May.<br />
Residents and rail users have three design<br />
options to choose from, a standard Network<br />
Rail design, a heritage style design, and a more<br />
modern and contemporary design.<br />
The new passenger bridge will have lifts at<br />
the station, to make it easier for people with<br />
mobility problems, parents with buggies, passengers<br />
with luggage, and anyone else that has<br />
difficulty accessing the platforms using the current<br />
footbridge which only has steps.<br />
The new bridge and lifts are scheduled for<br />
completion in spring 2014 and Warwickshire<br />
County <strong>Council</strong> is currently in the early stages<br />
of the design. It is expected to cost £1.26 million.<br />
The Department for Transport’s Access for All<br />
fund is providing a £1 million contribution<br />
towards the costs with the rest being raised<br />
from local developer funding contributions.<br />
A public exhibition at the railway station is<br />
being held from Monday 11th to Sunday 17th<br />
February to enable people to express their views<br />
at the start of the design process. For those who<br />
are unable to attend the public exhibition, the<br />
design images and an online feedback form can<br />
also be found at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/<br />

Cllr Peter Butlin (Cons, Admirals), the<br />
county council’s portfolio holder for transport<br />
and highways, said: “We really would welcome<br />
the views of local residents and other people<br />
who use the town station, particularly thoughts<br />
on the style of the bridge that will be built, so I<br />
would encourage people to come and view the<br />
public exhibition.<br />
“The new footbridge is part of our plans to<br />
provide better access for all at the town station.”<br />
The existing footbridge cannot be altered to<br />
accept lifts and it cannot be removed because it<br />
is a structure of local historic value.<br />
Pancake<br />
race<br />
meeting<br />
THE Mayor of Warwick and<br />
the town crier will start the<br />
town’s pancake races for<br />
primary <strong>school</strong> children on<br />
Shrove Tuesday next week.<br />
The races, organised by<br />
Warwick Rotary Club, will<br />
be held in the Market<br />
Square from 1.30pm.<br />
Last year’s winners, the<br />
infants from Newburgh<br />
School, and the juniors from<br />
Budbrooke School, will be<br />
keen to hold on to their trophies.<br />
The event is supported by<br />
Margetts and the Lazy Cow<br />
restaurant, with the latter<br />
providing pancakes to keep<br />
the crowds warm.<br />

“Fifty per cent of the <strong>chaperones</strong><br />
were being retained<br />
anyway, so we looked at it,<br />

The council initially said<br />
that removing the <strong>chaperones</strong><br />
would save them £700,000,<br />
half of the £1.4 million cuts<br />
they outlined for the hometo-<strong>school</strong><br />
transport system.<br />
However, after lowering<br />
the price it pays contractors<br />
to operate the <strong>bus</strong>es, coaches,<br />
and taxis, that take pupils to<br />
and from <strong>school</strong>, the council<br />
has made enough savings<br />
already.<br />
Cllr Timms added:<br />
“Announced three years ago,<br />
the £1.4 million was due to<br />
be saved by next year, and we<br />
are on target, in fact we are<br />

included comments made by local resident Anthony<br />

Unique race series marks<br />
Aston Martin’s centenary<br />
THE largest collection of Aston Martin racing cars<br />
ever to gather on a single track will meet at Brands<br />
Hatch in July for a unique race series to continue<br />
the British brand’s centenary celebrations.<br />
More than 100 of the<br />
marque’s racing cars, dating<br />
from 1922 to the present<br />
day, will gather for the twoday<br />
race series in Kent on<br />
6th and 7th July.<br />
This year sees the 100th<br />
anniversary of the incorporation<br />
of Aston Martin, and<br />
the event in July will recognise<br />
the company’s achievements<br />
in sports car racing<br />
during the last century.<br />
Aston Martin has<br />
recorded multiple wins at Le<br />
Mans, including outright<br />
victory in 1959, as well as<br />
the World Sportscar Championship<br />
the same year and<br />
most recently the Le Mans<br />
Series title in 2009.<br />
The two-day event will<br />
see Aston Martin racing cars<br />
from nearly every decade<br />
compete on the Brands<br />
Hatch Indy and Grand Prix<br />
circuits. Two special centenary<br />
races are also planned,<br />
the first covering the prewar<br />
era to the mid 1960s,<br />
