GOOGLE crowned Stratford the top e-town in the UK on

Firm fined £16k 

for Bulldog 

Bash pollution 

OVER 300 fish were killed at the Bulldog Bash bikers’ festival 

in August 2011 when a significant amount of pollution 

containing chemical toilet effluent was discharged into a tributary 

to the River Avon. 

On Friday, Orchid Investments Ltd, pleaded guilty at 

Leamington Magistrates’ Court to causing a discharge of 

chemical toilet effluent into a tributary without having an 

environmental permit in place. The company was fined 

£16,000, ordered to pay £9,367 in costs, along with a £15 victims’ 

surcharge. 

Magistrates heard that Orchid supplied sanitation services 

for the Bulldog Bash at Long Marston Airfield in 2011. Usually, 

sealed plastic holding tanks would have been used to 

contain the effluent during the event, prior to removal off site 

to a sewage treatment works. However, on this occasion the 

holding vessel was a ‘lagoon’ type cutting within the watercourse 

itself which the company had wrongly assumed was 

lined and the effluent was discharged directly into the watercourse. 

In mitigation, Orchid had expressed remorse for the incident, 

entered an early plea, and taken steps to ensure there 

will be no repeat incidents in future. 

Two die in crashes 

TWO motorists died in separate collisions over the weekend 

when the cars they were driving crashed into trees. 

A woman died on Friday night when her car left the M40 

between junction 15, the Longbridge island, and junction 16, 

near Henley shortly before 11.40pm. 

A man died in a car crash on the A441 Evesham Road near 

Alcester on Sunday when his silver Suzuki Vitara left the road 

and hit a tree around 5.30pm.

First draft of 

district boundary 

changes published 

THE independent Local Government Boundary 

Commission for England has published its final 

recommendations for new electoral arrangements 

for Warwick District Council. 

The publication follows 

an 11-week public consultation 

on its draft proposals 

last year and draws new 

boundaries for each council 

ward across Warwick. 

The commission’s final 

recommendations propose 

that Warwick should be represented 

by 46 councillors in 

the future, the same as the 

current arrangements. The 

recommendations also propose 

that those councillors 

should represent four threemember 

wards, 16 twomember 

wards and two 

single-member wards across 

the district. 

Max Caller, chair of the 

commission, said: “We are 

extremely grateful to the 

people of Warwick who took 

the time and effort to send us 

their views. The commission 

considered every piece of 

evidence it received before 

finalising these recommendations. 

“Across the district, we 

have sought to balance the 

views expressed to us by 

local people with the criteria 

we must apply when we are 

deciding on new electoral 

arrangements. As such, we 

believe these recommendations 

deliver electoral 

equality for voters as well as 

reflecting the identities of 

communities across Warwick.” 

In response to the views 

submitted to it during the 

consultation, the commission 

proposes some changes 

to the draft recommendations 

it put forward last 

October. For example, the 

final recommendations propose 

to include a threemember 

Whitnash ward 

which would cover virtually 

the whole of that parish. 

In Warwick town, the 

commission is now proposing 

that there should be a 

Heathcote and Myton ward 

which would include the 

Europa Way development 

with the Heathcote part of 

the Warwick Town Council 

area. 

In the Kenilworth area, 

the commission was persuaded 

by the council’s evidence 

that the ward pattern 

should remain the same as 

the current arrangements. It 

has therefore changed its 

draft recommendations 

accordingly. 

The final recommendations 

also mean that there

A hundred Easter eggs 

to find on the Bancroft 

A HUNDRED Easter eggs and two 

golden tickets will be hidden on Stratford’s 

Bancroft Gardens on Easter 

Sunday. 

Children are being encouraged to 

come down to the Bancroft from 

10.30am to try and find one of the 

brightly-coloured plastic eggs. Inside 

there will be a ‘Happy Easter’ message 

and a little chick for them to keep and 

when they give their egg to one of the 

market stalls on Waterside, the child will 

be given a chocolate mini-egg. Inside two 

of them will be golden tickets and the two 

lucky children who find them can 

exchange them for a golden wrapped 

chocolate Easter Bunny. 

To make it fair and to include as many 

children as possible, only one egg per 

child may be redeemed. 

The egg hunt has been set up by Stratford’s 

town and district councils, alongside 

the town’s market operator, Geraud, 

and coincides with the start of the 

summer craft markets, which will be on 

Waterside every Sunday and bank holiday 

between 10am and 5pm until September. 

Town clerk Sarah Summers said: “It 

provides the opportunity for us to say 

‘thank you’ to our customers for supporting 

all of Stratford’s markets.” 

Shaping the county’s 

autism strategy 

PEOPLE living with autism, plus their families 

and their carers, are all being asked to 

shape Warwickshire’s strategy for dealing 

with autism over the next three years. 

Yesterday (Monday) members of a Stratford 

Autistic group for adults met up at the 

Springfield Mind centre in Drayton Avenue 

to try and encourage people to get involved in 

the consultation, which lasts until 31st May. 

With World Autism Day next Tuesday, it 

was the perfect time to speak to those living 

with autism, their carers, service providers, 

and professionals.

The Autistic Spectrum Adults Plus group 

and their families got the ball rolling on the 

consultation yesterday, but there are also two 

online questionnaires, one for people aged 16

The ASA Plus group meets on the first 

Wednesday of every month at Springfield 

Mind and also tries to organise a social event 

each month. The group has members from 

across Warwickshire and the surrounding 

area.

Students design 

earplugs for 

the world 

THANKS to an innovative real-life project, products 

designed by students at Warwickshire College could 

soon be hitting the shelves at stores across the world. 

Malcolm Boothman, the international director of sales 

and marketing at Cirrus Healthcare Products, asked the 

3D design students at the college’s Trident Centre, in 

Warwick, to design a set of earplugs, suitable for use at 

festivals and concerts, that would appeal to young 

people. 

After receiving the brief, the students researched and 

developed their designs. 

Malcolm was so pleased with the eventual designs that 

he created three winners rather than the initial one. They 

were Luca Frondella, aged 17, from Leamington, Kai 

Triassi, aged 16, from Stratford, and Chris Gould, aged 

18, from Rugby.

Healey, said users of the 

River Avon would benefit 

from the project encouraging 

use of the navigable 

waterway. This was in accordance 

with the guidelines of 

the local planning authority, 

whose policy was to 

encourage water based recreation 

within the district. 

The report said: “Water 

based recreation makes a 

considerable contribution to 

the local economy. It will 

also provide much needed 

additional mooring space as 

recognised by the LPA.” 

The proposed development, 

while not increasing 

employment on site, will 

encourage additional use of 

local businesses associated 

with the leisure industry. 

Bidford Parish Council 

supported the application 

saying that it will “benefit 

local business by attracting 

more tourism to the area 

potentially creating more 

local jobs.” The application 

was also supported by district 

council ward member Cllr 

Maurice Howse (Cons, Bidford 

and Salford) who said it 

was good for growth and jobs 

in the district. 

Permission was granted 

subject to 27 conditions, 

including 13 in the interest 

of highway safety. 

One of the reasons it was 

granted was the economic 

benefits the proposed development 

had, as the scheme 

was sustainable and accords 

with the provisions of the 

National Planning Policy 

Framework (NPPF). 

The district council said 

that the proposal was also a 

suitable small scale recreational 

mooring facility, 

which was acceptable in 

principle with regards to 

policies and the Local Plan. 

The notice of decision 

said: “The mooring basin 

will be low key and the boats 

will be at a lower level than 

the road. Once the proposed 

landscaping has matured the 

basin will not be prominent 

when viewed from the road.”

Lydia speaks out as an 

ambassador for the 

victims of sex abuse 

A WARWICK woman who suffered 

years of sexual abuse as a child is 

speaking out in an effort to 

encourage others to seek help. 

Lydia Ward says the support she 

received from Warwickshire charity 

Safeline, which helps survivors of 

sexual abuse and rape, including 

childhood abuse, has turned her life 

around, even empowering her to 

start her own business as a confidence 

coach. 

Miss Ward is the first official 

Safeline ambassador, a position 

which will see her take her story into 

the community, raising awareness of 

sexual abuse, giving hope to survivors, 

and helping to generate 

donations for a cause which finds 

itself desperately under-funded. Her 

work will involve going into schools, 

giving talks to local organisations 

and generally raising the profile of 

the charity. 

Lindsey Lavender, chief executive 

of Safeline, which supported 400 

survivors of abuse alone last year 

through a confidential service of 

one-to-one counselling, group 

therapy, a free helpline and outreach 

work, said: “Statistical evidence 

shows that one in four females 

and one in six males are sexually 

abused and/or raped at some point 

in their lives and these are only the 

reported cases. For many compelling 

reasons, victims find it 

incredibly difficult to disclose what 

has happened to them, hence not 

being able to move on from 

remaining a ‘victim’ to becoming a 

‘survivor.’ This is where Lydia 

comes in as Safeline’s first ambassador, 

assisting Safeline in its awareness 

building campaign. 

“We are so grateful to Lydia for

speaking out about her experience 

and giving the strong example that 

there is hope of a better life after 

abuse.” 

It was not until she was 32-yearsold 

that Miss Ward had the courage 

to confide in her parents about what 

had happened to her as a child: “I 

had a marketing career which took 

me around the world and, on the 

surface, things were fantastic, but I 

was struggling to cope with 

everyday life. 

“Like many survivors, I had spent 

years blocking out my experience 

and trying desperately to stay in 

control, but things began to unravel 

and I had a breakdown.” 

Despite having sought counselling 

in the past, she feels Safeline provided 

a unique counselling experience, 

setting itself apart from other 

counselling agencies, with their specially-trained 

counsellors who 

enabled her to finally reclaim her 

identity and take the power back 

from her abusers. 

Since then, Miss Ward has 

launched her own life coaching 

organisation, Velvet Evolution, with 

consulting rooms in both Warwick 

and Leamington. 

“Abuse is a devastating experience, 

you lose much of who you are 

but Safeline’s very real support has 

truly given me ‘me’ back. I’m living 

proof that there is real hope for the 

future,” she said.

A VOLUNTEER group of advanced motorists in 

Stratford has reported the applicant demand doubling 

for its Institute of Advanced Motorists 

(IAM) course ‘A Skill for Life.’ 

The group has decided to 

run two courses at the same 

time and the six sessions on 

alternate Sunday mornings 

at Montague Road, in Warwick, 

started in January. 

Of some 21 applicants, 

most were from Stratford 

and South Warwickshire and 

all will soon be ready to take 

and pass their IAM 

Advanced Motorist test from 

early April. 

Some reasons the applicants 

gave for wanting to 

complete the course 

included, the roads being 

dangerous places with 

serious consequences when 

a mistake was made, gaining 

more confidence on the 

road, and somebody was 

driving extra miles due to 

work so wanted to be safer 

on the road. 

Three had the course 

bought as presents from 

existing advanced motorists. 

One woman was doing 

the course because she learnt 

about it from her daughter 

who was on Stratford 

group’s young driver 

scheme for 16-year-olds, 

off-road at Long Marston 

Airfield. 

Another reason included 

being caught speeding and 

having points on the driving 

licence, while others wanted 

to correct bad habits.

Lasting powers of 

attorney: banks and 

government slated 

TOO often banks and government departments 

make it unnecessarily difficult for families to take 

over the financial affairs of elderly relatives, a 

Stratford lawyer has warned. 

Sofia Tayton, of Lodders 

Solicitors, blames ignorance 

and bureaucracy for the 

problems. 

Her comments follow 

research by Saga into 

lasting powers of attorney 

(LPA)—where people 

heading into old age nominate 

someone to act in their 

stead in the event that they 

are no longer able to make 

their own decisions. 

LPA registrations with the 

Office of the Public 

Guardian have more than 

trebled in the past three 

years to 210,000. But that 

remains way short of what 

ideally it should be. 

Mrs Tayton, an expert on 

matters affecting the elderly, 

said: “The message is getting 

across and that is very 

welcome, but, despite campaigns 

by ourselves and 

others, many more should 

be addressing this issue. 

“I can understand that 

some find it difficult to confront 

their own fallibility, 

and this is an emotional 

decision, but in the long run 

it is much better for both the 

individual and the family. 

Without an LPA people are 

powerless to do even the 

simplest things on their relatives’ 

behalf, such as pay 

their bills. 

“As we have highlighted, 

and Saga too point out, if

explained that every single one of the 

students from Furzey contributed to 

creating his low-budget woodland 

garden design which won a gold medal 

at the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show.

even when people have an 

LPA they can be struggling 

to use them with a range of 

institutions from government 

departments through 

to banks and utility companies—the 

survey found one 

in three saying that staff do 

not appear to be trained to 

know what LPA means and 

what their company process 

is to action one. 

One in four has to continually 

show the requisite 

documents to the same company 

every time they deal 

with them. 

“It is a problem we too 

have come across with 

clients both about running 

into difficulties without the 

forms and, sometimes, with 

the forms, for example, 

banks will always want to 

see them but won't always 

recognise them!” 

She went on: “This is 

totally unacceptable—institutions 

need to get their act 

together. 

“If someone contracts 

Alzheimer’s it can be upsetting 

enough for family 

members. Banks, government 

departments and 

utility companies should not 

then put more difficulties in 

the way purely because staff 

are not familiar with, or are 

not trained to handle, lasting 

powers of attorney. 

“Indeed, quite the contrary, 

staff should be sympathetic 

and prepared to go the 

extra mile to help.”

TV Car SOS team restore 

Tony’s pride and joy 

A RACING fan who suffers from a 

degenerative spinal condition had a 

huge surprise when his Lotus Elan 

was restored in secret, for an episode 

of the National Geographic 

Channel’s new series of Car SOS. 

Tony Webb who lives in Moreton 

Paddox, near Wellesbourne, with his 

wife, Ros, bought his 1970 Lotus 

Elan +2 in 2004. The car had a 

colourful history of previous owners, 

including racing champions and tax 

evaders. 

Tony intended to take on the car’s 

restoration and collected many parts 

for it. But Ros told the Midweek 

Herald that with all the will in the 

world, Tony’s spinal condition meant 

it would have been difficult for him 

to carry out the restoration work. 

The condition could mean that the 

65-year-old may need wheelchair 

assistance in just a couple of years, 

and Tony had considered selling his 

Lotus. 

One day Ros caught sight of an 

advert in a car magazine that Tony 

had left lying around the house, 

calling for people to be nominated 

for the Car SOS team to carry out 

much-needed restorations to their 

cars. 

Ros responded to the advert and 

contacted the show in September to 

successfully nominate Tony and the 

Lotus. When they took the car away 

for the work to be carried out, she 

told her husband that the car was 

being stored with a friend in Oxfordshire. 

After the restoration was complete, 

Tony was taken on a factory 

tour at Lotus cars, of Norfolk, and 

during the visit he was presented 

with his beloved car. 

Much to the surprise of the couple, 

the colour had been changed during 

the restoration work from red to 

yellow—the Lotus’ original colour. 

Ros added: “I was delighted we 

kept it very secret. My husband is 

quite suspicious so it was quite an 

achievement. Quite a lot of people 

were involved.” 

Tony and Ros will feature in the 

final episode of the series, named 

‘Lotus Flowers’ on Thursday 11th 

April at 8pm.

NINETY-ONE per cent of 

motorists do not trust the 

government to reinvest 

money made from tolls on 

new roads, according to a 

survey by the Institute of 

Advanced Motorists. 

Sixty per cent do not support 

toll roads, and 79 per 

cent would not support the 

introduction of tolls on 

existing roads. 

Forty per cent of motorists 

would back more expensive 

tax discs instead of charging 

tolls on roads. Forty-one per 

cent wouldn’t support toll 

roads even if other types of 

tax were reduced. 

Motorists were divided on 

using toll roads. Forty-seven 

per cent said they don’t plan 

their journey to deliberately 

avoid using toll roads, while 

44 per cent do. 

Motorists feel strongly 

about toll roads in their local 

area. Fifty-six per cent of 

respondents said that they 

would use rural or local roads 

to avoid the toll charges, if a 

toll was enforced on their 

local motorway.

THE Midland Football Alliance season has been 

extended to Saturday 4th May after heavy snowfall 

wiped out the entire fixture programme again 

last Saturday. 

Leaders Stratford Town were due to host Gornal Athletic—the 

team that could get to within five points of them 

if they won all of their five games in hand. 

That game will now be played on the last day of the 

season on Saturday 4th May. With the reverse fixture 

between the two clubs already scheduled for the week 

before on Saturday 27th April, it means that the title race 

may not be decided until the end of the season. 

Weather and pitch conditions permitting, Town get the 

chance to resume their title chase tonight (Tuesday) when 

Bridgnorth Town visit the DCS Stadium in a 7.45pm kickoff 

Ṫhe Shropshire side’s recent run of four straight victories 

has lifted them into third place in the league table. 

The Easter weekend programme sees two games. This 

Saturday, Town travel to Continental Star before hosting 

Coventry Sphinx on Easter Monday. Both games kick off at 

3pm. 

All matches in the Midland Combination and Stratford 

Alliance were postponed with pitches all over the region 

covered under blankets of snow. 

Rugby also suffered with all games involving local clubs 

called off. Stratford’s Midlands 1 West game against 

Barkers’ Butts was also the club’s ‘Ladies Day’ and that has 

now been arranged for Saturday 13th April when the 

Black-and-Whites play Camp Hill at Pearcecroft. 

Saturday’s race meeting at Stratford was abandoned on 

Friday before the snow arrived with the course still waterlogged. 

The Luddington Road course has had to cancel both its 

opening fixtures this year with the hugely popular Irish 

Day a victim to the weather earlier this month. 

The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday 13th April 

when there will be a seven-race card starting at 1.55pm.

Big top fun at Warwick 

THERE will be family fun by the 

bucket load at Warwick Racecourse on 

Easter Monday for its April Fool’s Day 

meeting, including a circus in the 

Course Enclosure. 

It is also the first flat race meeting of 

the season at Warwick and sees six 

superb races on the card, with the first 

scheduled for 2.20pm. 

Other highlights at the Bank Holiday 

extravaganza include live music from 

rising local musician Matt Bate who 

has just been in Barbados recording his 

debut EP. 

Huw Williams, general manager, 

Warwick Racecourse, said: “This is our 

first Bank Holiday race fixture of the 

year and it promises to be a great day 

out for all the family. 

“Being the 1st April it seems more 

than appropriate that the circus, with 

lots of joking and giggles galore, will be
