LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER<br />
Dear <strong>Poly</strong> Community:<br />
Every year, i eagerly look forward to our annual gala and auction.<br />
the venue, the festive décor, the fabulous don<strong>at</strong>ed auction items,<br />
the bidding wars, gre<strong>at</strong> music, dancing, and scrumptious food all<br />
make an evening to remember.<br />
But tonight, i know i will feel a special spirit. After a rough year<br />
on many fronts, including the devast<strong>at</strong>ion wrought by Superstorm<br />
Sandy, i know i need a good dose of the <strong>Poly</strong> family. the support<br />
which parents, alumni, faculty, and staff showed each other in the<br />
afterm<strong>at</strong>h of th<strong>at</strong> terrible event—and the ways we partner each day<br />
to foster our children’s growth and educ<strong>at</strong>ion—are reasons enough<br />
to celebr<strong>at</strong>e.<br />
But aside from the very worthy cause of the <strong>Poly</strong> Fund, we have the<br />
incredible work of our Auction Committee—led by Erica & l.A. Reid<br />
P’19, ’22; Daniela Vitale-Howell P’20, ’23, ’25; Alexandra Maresca<br />
’00; Elaine Berry P’11; Susanna Furfaro P’13, ’15 (trustee); louise<br />
Fasano-Culmine P’23; and their many partners in crime (a.k.a.<br />
parent volunteers)—to enjoy. Our donors, sponsors, hard-working<br />
Advancement staff, and <strong>at</strong>tendees—th<strong>at</strong>’s you!—also deserve a<br />
hearty round of applause.<br />
Of course, a giant “gold star” must go to Joan Osborne P’23 for<br />
generously don<strong>at</strong>ing her time and extraordinary artistry during<br />
tonight’s very special performance.<br />

Considered one of the gre<strong>at</strong> voices of her gener<strong>at</strong>ion, Joan<br />
Osborne is a multi-pl<strong>at</strong>inum selling recording artist and<br />
seven-time Grammy nominee. Her debut album, “Relish,”<br />
wove together strands of American roots music, poetic lyrics<br />
and impassioned vocals, and produced the intern<strong>at</strong>ional hit<br />
“(Wh<strong>at</strong> if God Was) One of us.” Since then she has released<br />
several albums, toured extensively with her own band, and as<br />
a member of the Gr<strong>at</strong>eful Dead, appeared in the documentary<br />
“Standing in the Shadows of Motown,” and shared the stage<br />
with Bob Dylan, luciano Pavarotti, Stevie Wonder, Emmylou<br />
Harris, and P<strong>at</strong>ti Smith to name just a few. Joan has produced<br />
two albums for Americana stalwarts the Holmes Brothers, and<br />
co-produced her most recent release “Bring it on Home” which<br />
was nomin<strong>at</strong>ed for a Grammy (Best Blues Album).<br />
