The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 6, 2010
Feast of Corpus Christi…Communion from the Cup
Jesus’ command to us at the Last Supper is clear: “Take this, all
of you, and drink from it.” In the almost four decades since the
Second Vatican Council, communion from a common cup for
all the faithful was gradually re-introduced as a sign of
obedience to the Lord’s command. But centuries before that,
sharing both the body and blood was so much the norm that to
refuse the cup raised suspicions about one’s beliefs.
For a number of reasons, the practice of sharing the cup became
the exception rather than the rule. Popular piety placed an
increased emphasis on seeing the sacred elements. Because of
the difficulty of seeing the wine in the chalice, the wine became
secondary. A change in the posture for communion from
standing to kneeling made reception from the cup more
awkward. Fears of spillage and disease also played a role.
Complicated theological disputes eventually resulted in a
decision at the Council of Trent in 1562 to avoid further
misunderstandings and to withhold the cup from the laity.
Good liturgy demands that our actions be consistent with our
words. At the preparation of the gifts, we bring forward the
gifts of bread and wine. We pray that “the fruit of the vine and
the work of human hands” become “our spiritual food and
drink.” These gifts are offered to the Father, who changes them
into the body and blood of the Lord and gives them back to us.
The fullness of the mystery is lost when we do not accept the
gifts in return. Good liturgy also demands respect for the power
of our symbols. Wine calls to mind not only the joys of the
heavenly banquet able, but also the price of the covenant which
led to Jesus’ suffering and death. We neglect the power of such
images when we ignore the cup. I encourage you, if you are
able, to receive both the body and the blood of Christ at
communion time. We are privileged to be able to receive the
full sign value of the Eucharist, that is, full reception of both the
body and the blood of Christ.
Prudence, of course, dictates that education and common sense
be used so that sharing in the one cup is not a cause of fear or
discontent. The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta have not
found it necessary to recommend that the Church abandon its
ancient practice; however, out of courtesy, a communicant with
a contagious illness, whether a mild cold or something more
serious, may wish to refrain from drinking from the cup.
“When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your
death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory.” May our actions
be consistent with the words we sing. May we eat and drink in
obedience to the Lord’s command.
Q & A: Communion More Than Once…a question
often asked: Corpus Christi again…
A key insight that the Church has recovered since Vatican
Council II is that participation in the Mass reaches a high point
in the sharing of communion, an action that Christians should
consider normal and commonplace rather than secondary and
rare.
This vital connection between one’s presence at Mass and the
reception of communion is expressed in several ways, including
the understanding of Mass as a sacrificial meal in which we are
3
fed with the Lord’s body and blood, the dismissal of catechumens
before the liturgy of the Eucharist (they are dismissed precisely
because they cannot receive communion until they are baptized),
the procession with the gifts and the distribution of bread
consecrated at the Mass rather than bread that has been reserved
in the tabernacle.
As the interconnections between the reception of communion and
participation in the Mass became clearer, people began to wonder
why individuals should be prevented from receiving communion
at a Mass simply because they might have received communion
earlier that day. In the 1970’s, Rome changed a long-standing
practice and explicitly permitted those who were present at a
special Mass, such as Masses in which sacraments were conferred
or similar special occasions, to receive communion, even if they
had already communicated earlier in the day.
This revised practice has been included in a more general form in
the 1983 Code of Canon Law. There is no longer any mention of
the second Mass being in any way related to a special occasion
(canon 917). Thus, current Church custom permits anyone to
receive communion a second time on any day as long as the
second reception of communion occurs during Mass. (Thus, this
permission does not hold if communion is being distributed
outside of Mass except in the case of viaticum.)
The Scriptures record that, at the Last Supper, Jesus said, “All of
you, take and eat….take and drink.” On those occasions when a
person attends a second Mass on the same day (either by
obligation or by devotion), he or she should never hesitate about
fully participating in the celebration of the Eucharist by receiving
communion a second time…or a third and so on.
And another thing….A Corpus Christi Reflection
As I watched our First Communicants receive communion for the
first time I was struck how beautiful they all looked and how
reverent they all received the body and blood of Christ. It was for
them a holy act and nothing that any of them took for granted.
Each made a simple bow before receiving the Eucharist and then
the sacredness of the reception itself. May it be so for us, too.
Watch the sayings on our tee shirts or sweatshirts! Some are very
inappropriate for Mass. Watch the casualness of our clothing!
Some are better for the beach than the church. The Second
Graders reminded us of how important and special it is to be able
to receive holy communion at Mass. May we receive this
communion as if it were our first Mass, our only Mass, our last
Mass. May we do so with reverence both in the clothes we wear
and in the actions we perform for it is a noble and grand thing that
we are able to do.
It is finally Summer! Yippee! May we all enjoy a little
change of pace and a break from our school year routine.
Enjoy the beauty of the green of Kirkwood and the warmth
and the abundance of the sun. And I’ll see you in church!
Have you ever wanted to say
the rosary as a family but just
thought your kids were too little
or would not pay attention?
Maybe you don't even
remember how to say the rosary but might if you were reminded.
The Young Families group at St. Peter Parish has decided to make
saying the rosary a true family event! We will meet in church the
4th Monday of each month from 6:30-7:00PM and say the rosary
for a special intention. All you need to bring is a rosary and your
family. There is no need to worry that your kids might be loud or
not pay attention, all will add to the overall meaningful prayer our
families can offer.
Our next monthly rosary will be on
Monday, June 28th at 6:30PM!

MAY 23RD PARISH BLOOD DRIVE
RESULTS
Forty-nine parishioners of St. Peter parish showed their support
for area hospital patients, by donating forty-five units of red cells,
and two units of platelets at the drive on Sunday, May 23rd. The
math is not so straightforward, but what is clear is that the lives of
up to one hundred and twenty-one St. Louis area hospital patients
were positively impacted by the generosity of those who donated
their blood.
But it’s not just about numbers; it’s about helping to save lives,
and perhaps prolonging the lives of loved ones who might not
otherwise get to send just one more Mother’s Day card. So a
great big “thank you” goes out from a child at Cardinal Glennon
who is toughing out cancer treatments, or a trauma victim at St.
Clare’s Hospital.
And a special thanks goes out to MacArthur’s Bakery for their
generous donation of cakes and pastries. Please be sure to thank
them!
A note to those who missed their appointments: there’s still time
to donate, AND be eligible to donate in August at the next drive.
Go to the center at 9860 Watson (right next to Sweet Tomatoes
Restaurant). Their hours are Tuesday through Thursday - 1:00PM
-7:00PM; Friday and Saturday - 7:00AM-1:00PM. Call ahead:
me, please do so:
STS. TERESA & BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY
(FR. GARY’S PARISH)
"If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one."
-Mother Teresa
The Next Delivery Will Be June 21st
For May we donated approximately 590 food items. Again we
have helped many, thanks to all of the generous people of St.
Peter. Fr. Gary’s parish pantry at Sts. Teresa & Bridget are so
thankful.
It is time for all of the children to be out of school for the summer
and that means more food is needed for those who are already in
great need. LET’S KEEP THAT GIVING SPIRIT going for
them.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to
the monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our
home, placing it on the front porch. A list of items needed
and delivery dates is located in The Gathering Area in the
back of church. By collecting canned goods MONTHLY we
can help make other peoples' lives better and respond to
Jesus’ call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
ST. PETER WOMEN'S GUILD NEWS UPDATE
Hello Ladies,
After four years, it is time for the changing of the guard.
The current planning committee would like to invite four
to six willing Women's Guilders to take over the planning
reins.
It requires a minimum investment of time. We usually
meet one time before each meeting but the entire year
could be planned in one sitting.
Currently, Women's Guild has been meeting every other
month during the school year but there are no steadfast
rules.
We have enjoyed re-launching the Guild and we look
forward to attending future gatherings
Please contact Kim Pannell at
GREAT ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY!
Paul VI Institute of Catechetical and Pastoral Studies, which
offers college-level courses to adults pursuing a greater
understanding of the Catholic Church, is accepting registrations
for their summer classes. Paul VI is accredited by the Vatican
Sacred Congregation of the Clergy. The classes for the summer
2010 semester will be held in June and July.
Our parish is a member of the Paul VI Institute CCP
(Comprehensive Catechetical Program). In this program we have
a yearly subscription with Paul VI. This enables ALL
parishioners to take courses FREE of charge. Paul VI is really
one of the St. Louis area’s hidden Catholic treasures – many
Catholics still don’t know much about the institute’s history of
providing Catholic doctrine, Sacred Scripture, liturgy, morality,
spirituality, pastoral theology and catechetical methodology for
those exercising various apostolates in the Church.
For more information about the courses and registration, please
contact Linda Doyle at 822-1347 or e-mail her at
ldoyle@stpeterkirkwood.org.
GLENNON SUNDAY
The special collection at Masses this weekend will be for the
Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Cardinal
Glennon, the only free standing Catholic pediatric hospital in the
country, has been treating children for fifty-four years under the
mission of never turning a child away. Your generosity is
important for the hospital to continue this mission. Please give to
the children by making a donation to the hospital’s annual
Glennon Sunday Collection or mail your check, payable to
Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center to: Glennon Sunday
Collection, 1465 South Grand Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63104.
Thank you for caring!
Please remember the deceased and their loved ones in your
prayers:
SUITCASE DRIVE
Seventh grade Girl Scout Troop
2206 is collecting HARD, old style
(no soft fabric) suitcases for our
Silver Award project. They will be
decorated by our scout troop and
then given to foster children
because most foster kids do not
have suitcases, and they carry their
belongings in a trash bag. If you
have a suitcase to donate, please call Haley Williams at 314-984-
8301 or Anna Hesse at 314-966-2547. We would be happy to
pick them up. Please call! Thank you
ROOM AT THE INN
Due to a facilities scheduling conflict here at St. Peter, we made a
one-time change to our normal parish hosting commitment. A St.
Peter's Room at the Inn coordinator assisted 10 homeless guests at
the Sisters of Divine Providence location in Bridgeton on Friday,
May 21.
The Room at the Inn program is a great opportunity to practice
stewardship by sharing our time and blessings with those who are
not as fortunate. We will resume our normal hosting of guests
next month and every third Friday of the month thereafter.
If you would like additional information about the program or
would like to volunteer, call Jim (965-1939), Pat (966-3165), or
Larry (821-7929). Thank you!
ST. PETER ACTS IS COMING!!!!
People have been asking, “What is ACTS?” The ACTS
movement came from the Cursillo Movement. It began in the
Archdiocese of San Antonio in 1987. Three men who were
formerly involved with Cursillo met and discussed the
possibilities of starting a retreat program that concentrates more
on parish life and community. The result of this meeting was
ACTS. This movement has spread throughout the United States,
and is quickly growing in our Archdiocese.
ACTS stands for: Adoration…Community…Theology…Service.
St. Peter retreats will be held at Mercy Center in February, 2011
Continue to watch the bulletin for more details, and please keep
the planning group in your prayers.
