Wedding Traditions…
Have you ever heard the old wedding rhyme that suggests that
the bride should carry “something old, something new,
something borrowed, and something blue?” Most weddings
involve some combination of old and new as couples try to
reflect their continuity with the weddings that have gone before
theirs as well as what is unique in their marriage. Those who
favor what they think of as the old often speak of their wedding
as “traditional,” while those who favor what they consider to be
new often refer to theirs as “contemporary.” More often than
not, these terms simply imply a particular style.
For Catholics, weddings are both traditional and contemporary
in the best sense of the terms. Each Catholic wedding is
traditional because it hands on and enfleshes the Church‟s faith
concerning the sacrament of marriage. (The root of the Latin
word tradition literally means “to hand down” or “to hand
over.”) Each Catholic wedding is contemporary because it
makes present here and now in this unique marriage God‟s love
for the couple and Christ‟s relationship with the Church.
Much of what is popularly considered “traditional” at weddings
actually consists of social customs from another era that no
longer corresponds to the Church‟s (or even a modern man‟s or
woman‟s) understanding of marriage. For example, the custom
whereby the bride‟s father “gives the bride away” to the groom
at the head of the aisle reflects a time when marriages were
arranged between the groom and the bride‟s father, and in some
cases, the woman was seen as property to be given and received.
Today, the Church and society both emphasize marriage as a
mutual decision by equal and free partners.
Wedding customs that no longer reflect reality or faith are
meaningless. Authentic wedding traditions “hand down” the
Church‟s ageless faith in ways that respect the current social
reality of marriage and the contemporary Christian
understanding of marriage.
Here Comes the Bride…and the Groom…and Their
Parents!
If television and the movies are to be believed, every North
American wedding (at least among English-speaking people)
begins with the tune popularly known as Here Comes the Bride.
As all eyes turn to gaze admiringly on the bride walking down
the aisle, the groom slips unnoticed to his place at the head of
the aisle. In reality, this stereotype is beginning to break down.
Here Comes the Bride, which is actually the Bridal Chorus from
Wagner‟s opera Lohengrin, has been eclipsed in popularity by
other processionals such as Purcell’s Trumpet Tune and
Clarke‟s Trumpet Voluntary. The major limitation of Here
Comes the Bride is its association with just the bride, whereas
the Roman Catholic Rite of Marriage addresses bride and groom
as equal partners who together undertake the covenant of
marriage. The entrance procession as envisioned by the Church
includes both bride and groom who “may be escorted by at least
their parents and the two witnesses” (Rite of Marriage, 20).
During the wedding liturgy, the bride and groom together serve
as ministers of the sacrament of marriage. Even apart from the
liturgy, many of the wedding preparations that had been the
domain of the bride and her mother are increasingly being
shared by the groom.
3
The participation of the groom in the entrance procession does not
eliminate the bride‟s father from his place in the procession, just
as the involvement of the groom in preparations for the wedding
does not mean that the couple won‟t need the assistance of the
bride‟s mother. The bride‟s parents and the groom‟s parents as
well have played an important role in bringing their son or
daughter to this point in life. By including both sets of parents in
the entrance procession, the wedding liturgy honors the families
that have shaped the bride and groom as they come together to
establish a new family.
Rose Ross Receives Recognition….From the “unsung
heroes and heroines” Department….
This Sunday afternoon at 1:00 at the Immacolata Church, Rose
Ross of our parish will be one of the women of the Archdiocese
who will receive the Artist Award at the 2010 Catholic Women‟s
Recognition Ceremony. The Award honors inspiring women who
use their artistic talents to enhance the art and environment of
worship spaces by creating a deeper spiritual awareness in our
churches. Rose has been one of these “behind the scenes”
persons who throughout the year uses her talents to make our
worship space here at St. Peter come alive for the various
liturgical seasons. Over the years she has skillfully prepared a
ton of flower arrangements, sewed yards and yards of materials
for vestments, banners, and altar cloths. She has climbed ladders,
sewed buttons on old albs, and prepared the altar daily for
hundreds and hundreds of Masses. She and others from various
parishes who do what she does will be honored by Archbishop
Carlson and rightfully recognized for all their selfless time and
energy to the Church of St. Louis.
Congratulations, Rose, we are blessed and enriched with your
faithful ministry among us.
Bulletin Snafus and Errors and Mistakes…
These sentences actually appeared in church bulletins
(not ours) or were announced in church services…enjoy!
“At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be „What is
Hell?‟ Come early and listen to our choir practice.”
“Ladies, don‟t forget the rummage sale. It‟s a chance to get rid of
those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your
husbands”.
“The fasting and prayer conference includes meals”.
“The pastor will preach his farewell message after which the choir
will sing: „Break Forth Into Joy.‟ ”
The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation
would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast
next Sunday.
Please place your donation in the envelope along with the
deceased person you want remembered.
Have a great week, folks! School starts in a week please pray
for cooler weather. I’ll see you in church.
ADORATION . . . COMMUNITY . . . THEOLOGY . . . SERVICE
A C T S
SERVICE:
Service arises from our identity as Christians and our love for
God. A servant‟s first loyalty is to the master, not to the task.
We serve out of love, concerned not with what role we are called
to serve in, but with the authenticity of our love for Christ.
The ACTS commitment to service is inspired by: “This is how all
will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.” (John 13:35)
Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The
world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate,
investments, and material goods. How much time are you
investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are
you inventing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more
time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the
things of this world.
If you or someone you know are interested in learning
more about the Catholic Church?
Then you might be interested in joining the RCIA process.
What do the initials RCIA stand for?
The initials stand for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.
What is the RCIA process?
It is a process or journey for individuals who desire to establish or
deepen their relationship with Our Lord, Jesus Christ and want to
learn more about the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The first step in this process is called the Inquiry or
Evangelization Period. It is a time for individuals who are
interested in learning more about the Catholic faith to begin to
explore it and surface questions. It is also a time when the Sacred
Scriptures will be introduced and discussed. This initial period is
very informal but provides information and formational
opportunities for those individuals who are looking to acquaint
themselves with the Catholic faith.
Our last Inquiry Session will be held on
Thursday, August 19th.
The session begins at 7:00PM and ends by 8:30PM.
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more
about the Catholic faith or you would like more information
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
On this, the Feast of the Assumption of Our Blessed
Mother into Heaven, let's consider how Mary prayed
the Psalms. Yes, she did. She learned them from her
parents, St. Ann and St. Joachim. She and Joseph
taught them to Jesus as they observed the holy days
and festivals of Jewish life. More than likely Psalm
117 was recited often: 'Alleluia! Praise the Lord, all
you nations; glorify him, all you peoples! For steadfast is his
kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the Lord endures forever.'
Our Blessed Mother calls us, guides us, leads us into prayer. She
wants all her children to draw close to her side, and as always
happens, to the side of her Son.
The following Holy Hours are available:
Wednesday 7:00AM Wednesday 12:00Noon
Thursday 7:00AM Thursday 8:00AM
Friday 7:00AM Friday 8:00AM
Friday 7:00PM
The following Holy Hours have an adorer who cannot come
every week and needs a partner to share the hour:
Thursday 11:00AM Friday 8:00AM
For our special hour of praise before the Blessed Sacrament, call
DINNERS FOR 8 - FALL 2010
Would you like to get to know other
members of the parish?
"Dinners For 8" is a casual way to get
better acquainted with others in the
parish. The plan is simple: 4 couples
(8 people) have dinner once a month
for 4 months. Each couple/pair takes a
turn hosting and preparing an informal meal for the others in their
group. The couples/individuals are put into groups where
hopefully no one knows each other, but have the chance to build
new community by sharing the 4 meals together. We make every
effort to group people based upon common stages of life.
If you are interested, please email Steve Meyer at
smts001@gmail.com or call him at 835-0959.
I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers during
my recent illness. I received several visitors, several cards, and a
lot of phone calls of encouragement. Today, August 16th, my
physician just released me for all normal activities at work and at
play. Being able to speak now from first hand experience, the
power of prayer is VERY REAL. There have been several
moments where I felt an upsurge in strength and encouragement
and I am convinced that your prayers and God‟s Blessings have
been the source.
Thanks to all of you once again and I hope to see you in church.
Blessings to all,
ST. PETER AND PAUL SOUP KITCHEN
The volunteers at St. Peter and Paul soup kitchen in Soulard
