Baptism<br />

Baptisms are celebrated every Sunday of the month at 12:30PM.<br />

Parents are expected to participate in a Baptismal Preparation<br />

Program. Please call the rectory to arrange for<br />

the Baptismal Preparation Program and a date for Baptism.<br />

Weekly Anointing and Prayer<br />

After the 9:OOAM Mass each Sunday, we will celebrate<br />

the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, for anyone<br />

who has the need to receive this sacrament. This is meant<br />

to include such concerns as upcoming diagnostic tests,<br />

limitations of aging, anxiety, depression, undue stress,<br />

addiction, etc. for all ages.<br />

Please gather in the pews at the front of church<br />

and the priest will be with you approximately<br />

10 minutes after Mass is over.


Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, 2011<br />

Praying the Mass Anew…<br />

The New Translation of the Roman Missal<br />

The day will be Sunday, November 27th, 2011. This day will<br />

likely seem as any other Sunday. Faithful <strong>Catholic</strong>s will rise<br />

from sleep at their chosen times; each will carry out the normal<br />

Sunday morning preparations for Mass, arriving at the parish<br />

church at a fitting time. Some will enter a familiar pew, while<br />

others sit in a place that is new to them. Some will open the<br />

missalette or hymnal to preview the readings of this First<br />

Sunday of Advent; others may simply pray in silence before<br />

Mass. All will be as normal.<br />

Mass will begin with a typical music selection, fitting for this<br />

Advent morn. The priest and other ministers will process into<br />

church, going to their proper places. Finally, the priest will lead<br />

the people in the Sign of the Cross and greeting. All of a<br />

sudden, an entire parish congregation, on hearing the priest greet<br />

them with the words “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and<br />

the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with<br />

you all,” will respond “And with your spirit.” No longer will<br />

the Sunday be merely routine; we will be praying the Mass<br />

anew. The people‟s response, perhaps seeming unfamiliar or<br />

odd at first, will begin the praying of the mass with words that<br />

will likely include new musical settings for newly worded<br />

hymns like “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts,” and new<br />

responses to such phrases as “Behold the Lamb of God, behold<br />

him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those<br />

called to the supper of the Lamb.” Everyone, aware of the<br />

change, will be ready to respond “Lord, I am not worthy that<br />

you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my<br />

soul shall be healed.” Many will receive the Eucharist, aware<br />

that is the same gift of Christ‟s Body and Blood as on the<br />

previous Sunday, but with renewed understanding, as given<br />

through the words themselves, of who it is that they receive and<br />

how we are nourished in the offering of every Mass.<br />

The given scene, while it may be a replica of every experience<br />

to be had, serves as a means to begin answering the question<br />

“why?” Some may recall the first time they prayed the Mass in<br />

English. Others may have never known prayers for Mass other<br />

than in English versions that have been prayed over the last 40<br />

years. Some may be hesitant to accept what appears on the<br />

surface as nothing more than change “for change sake.” Yet, all<br />

deserve to know why such a change is happening, and why it is<br />

happening now.<br />

Translations Direct From the Latin…<br />

These new prayer settings, the fruits of new English translations<br />

of the venerable and time-honored Latin prayers for Mass, are<br />

given as a further implementing of the use of the common or<br />

“vernacular” languages in the liturgy of the <strong>Church</strong>. In the<br />

1960‟s, the Second Vatican Council sought to reform the liturgy<br />

of the <strong>Church</strong> so that all of the faithful would more easily and<br />

fruitfully be able to enter into liturgical prayer, actually<br />

participating in the saving mysteries of Christ with a greater<br />

sense of prayer and deeper awareness of God‟s presence in the<br />

rituals of the <strong>Church</strong>. An expression of this fruitful participation<br />

envisioned at Vatican II was through the fitting use of the<br />

common languages of peoples throughout the world. In addition<br />

to using Latin, such opportunity for the use of vernacular was<br />

set forth by the Council to aid the people in praying the Mass<br />

with more complete understanding. For the last 40 years,<br />

English speaking countries have already prayed most, if not all of<br />

the Mass parts in their own language, using English versions<br />

translated from original Latin prayer texts. However, the work of<br />

translating necessarily continues from generation to generation, as<br />

language continues to evolve and change, and new words, with<br />

more definite meaning come to be.<br />

Currently, we have received a renewed and revised English<br />

translation of these Latin prayers. Within this new translation,<br />

specific goals and guidelines for translating prayers, as set forth<br />

by the <strong>Church</strong>, have been more fully accomplished. This new<br />

translation portrays in English the more literal meaning of the<br />

Latin prayers, restoring words that convey the truths of faith more<br />

properly, and reconnecting these texts more clearly to their<br />

biblical sources and roots. In some cases, too, it is a more formal<br />

or poetic style. While the learning of the new versions will take<br />

time and practice, this learning process invites us to open our<br />

minds and hearts to being renewed in the <strong>Catholic</strong> faith that we<br />

have received and truly love, encouraging us to grow in<br />

knowledge of the faith itself, deepening our love for God.<br />

In the weeks ahead, pages like this one will be in my column,<br />

both to explain the new versions of the prayers, and to give<br />

answers to real questions and concerns as we prepare to pray the<br />

Mass anew, beginning on that historic First Sunday of Advent,<br />

November 27th, 2011. Each insert will seek to invite all of us to<br />

go beyond simply knowing the new words to a deeper and more<br />

complete understanding of the great gift of the Holy Mass.<br />

As we begin this journey toward praying the Mass anew, may we<br />

commend ourselves to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary,<br />

Mother of the Incarnate Word, who responded, “Let it be done to<br />

me according to your word,” that Jesus Christ, the Word made<br />

flesh, may lead us to love and understand the renewed words<br />

through which we approach the Father in heaven at every Mass.<br />

The Burning Question: Why is there a need for a new<br />

translation?<br />

Pope John Paul II issued the third edition of the Missale<br />

Romanum (the Latin text of the Roman Missal) during the Jubilee<br />

Year in 2000. This new edition included many new texts<br />

requiring translation. In addition, the experience of the years after<br />

the Second Vatican Council gave rise to a desire for more formal<br />

and literal translations of the original texts from the Vatican<br />

Council. Pope John Paul II, being a linguist, realized in his<br />

travels and celebrating Holy Mass around the world, that some<br />

language groups were not praying what the original Latin text<br />

said. We all were not praying the same thing. He penned a<br />

document entitled Liturgiam Authenticam where he expresses his<br />

desire for greater unity with our words, with what we say and<br />

pray within the Mass. He challenged each language group to<br />

conform their translations more in line with the original Latin.<br />

Latin, by the way, is still the official language of the Roman<br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Church</strong>.<br />

This new translation will employ the best of what we have<br />

learned about translation and liturgical language in two<br />

generations of celebrating the Liturgy of the vernacular. It will<br />

provide an opportunity to reflect more deeply on what we say and<br />

pray and on the Eucharist itself.<br />

It is October folks…truly Missouri‟s best month! Enjoy its<br />

colors, its smells, its autumnal foods, and its incredible beauty.<br />

Birthing Kit Project. We were able to collect many items that<br />

opportunity to have a cleaner and safer delivery thanks to your<br />

Attention all families!! Beginning this weekend we are<br />

starting something new at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Peter</strong> <strong>Church</strong> on Sundays! Moms<br />

and Dads please join us at the 9:00AM Mass with your children<br />

and they can bring their own offertory contribution up to the altar.<br />

Every week at the 9:00AM Mass, as soon as the song begins<br />

during the offertory, your child may bring up any monetary<br />

donation that they wish. Some may choose quarters and some<br />

may bring up dollars...but all can participate! So, as you put your<br />

envelope in the basket for your family still seated in your pew,<br />

your child can walk up to the foot of the altar bringing with them<br />

their special gift to offer to Jesus in thanksgiving for the many<br />

gifts they have received each day! We welcome all children who<br />

wish to participate. Ushers will assist your children as needed.<br />

pumpkin decorating event following<br />

the 9:00AM Mass on October 16th.<br />

We will walk to the Kirkwood Farmer's<br />

Market and purchase pumpkins to<br />

decorate. All decorations will be provided<br />

by the Young Families Group. We will<br />

also provide light snacks for the kids<br />

participating. This year we are adding a service component to<br />

this event. Please bring a Halloween, non food item, stickers,<br />

pencils, small Halloween related toys to donate to Ranken Jordan<br />

Pediatric Rehabilitation Center. All donations will be brought to<br />

the hospital by the Young Families Group to benefit the therapy<br />

WELCOME TO TGIF—TO GROW IN FAITH!<br />

Traditionally, TGIF, or Mystagogy, is for all who just came into<br />

the <strong>Church</strong> at the Easter Vigil last April. These once-a-month<br />

sessions provide an opportunity to share in each other‟s spiritual<br />

journey. However, this group is for all <strong>Catholic</strong>s! Even if you<br />

have been a <strong>Catholic</strong> since birth, you may feel called to be a part<br />

of this group.<br />

We will share the Gospel message, ask questions, and listen to<br />

each other. This can give us another opportunity to grow together<br />

as one body in our faith! We will get started after 9:00AM Mass,<br />

around 10:15AM and should be finished by 11:15AM.<br />

Nancy gave birth to a daughter with Down Syndrome and a serious heart defect, who passed away at the age of 5 months.<br />

Nancy ‟s daughter taught her:<br />

“That life isn‟t fair – to anyone. That self-pity can be an incapacitating disease. That God is better at directing my life<br />

than I am. That there are more caring people in the world than I knew. That Down Syndrome is an inadequate description of a<br />

person. That I am not „perfect‟ either, just human. That asking for help and support is not a sign of weakness. That every child<br />

truly is a gift from God. That joy and pain can be equally deep. That you can never lose when you love. That every crisis<br />

contains opportunity for growth. That every person has a special purpose in life. That I needed to worry less and celebrate<br />

more.”<br />

Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to come by Jeff Cavins<br />

In this intriguing look at one of the most talked-about books in Scripture, Jeff Cavins explores Revelation to demonstrate how the<br />

Kingdom established by Christ in His <strong>Church</strong> is intimately connected with the Kingdom of Heaven, especially through the celebration of<br />

the Mass. You will discover how the Mass is really heaven on earth. You will also learn what all the mysterious figures and images of<br />

Revelation represent, as well as what will happen during the Second Coming of Christ, what has already happened, and what is<br />

happening now in salvation history.<br />

Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come has been granted the Imprimatur by Justin Cardinal Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia.<br />

The <strong>St</strong>udy Set by Jeff Cavins & Thomas Smith includes study questions guiding participants through their study with thoughtprovoking<br />

questions about the Book of Revelation and related portions of the Catechism of the <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Church</strong>. East lesson is designed<br />

to be followed by the corresponding talk from the DVD series.<br />

Also included in the <strong>St</strong>udy Set is the Revelation Key Card. This invaluable tool shows you the significance of the themes, numbers,<br />

colors, and symbols in the book of Revelation.<br />

SILVER STREAKS EXERCISE PROGRAM AT ST. PETER…<br />

Come join us on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:00 PM in<br />

Ursuline Hall in the Msgr. Deutschmann Room.<br />

This is a good hour-long workout that isn‟t too strenuous. It will<br />

get you moving and keep those joints mobile. Silver <strong>St</strong>reaks is a<br />

chair-based class to benefit people with arthritis, stiffness or who<br />

just want to keep moving. Maybe you are looking for something<br />

to get you started, to go with your walking program or to add<br />

some variety. The program is designed to improve overall<br />

flexibility, balance and strength. Try it, you will like it. Cost is<br />

only $5.00 per session, payable on the day you attend. The<br />

instructor, Holly Ohmes, is certified by the Arthritis Foundation.<br />

EXERCISE FOR ARTHRITIS<br />

Come join this group exercise and education program designed<br />

for those with arthritis and related diseases. Our goal is to reduce<br />

pain and stiffness, and help maintain or improve mobility, muscle<br />

strength, and function.<br />

Classes are free and held at Kirkwood United Methodist <strong>Church</strong>,<br />

201 West Adams, in room 110 from 1:00-2:00PM. This on-going<br />

class meets every Tuesday from 1:00-2:00PM.<br />

We will be sitting or standing for exercises. Wear comfortable<br />

clothing and non-slip shoes. All abilities welcome.<br />

Classes are sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation. Carol<br />

Connolly, parish nurse, is the certified instructor.<br />

body confidence.<br />

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring your yoga mat and any<br />

props you have. This Hatha Yoga class is for all levels.<br />

Tai chi, qigong, mindful movement, and contemplative<br />

are held Thursday mornings at 9:00AM in Ursuline Hall. Classes<br />
