Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 3, 2010
The Sunday Eucharist….
Why do we fill up the seats in church from the back to the front?
Maybe it’s piety: We sit in the back because, aware of our many
failings, we don’t feel worthy to draw near. Maybe it’s the
culture: We sit in the back because our mothers taught us never
to claim the best seats or make ourselves the center of attention.
Maybe it’s selfish: We want to be able to skip out early.
Whatever the reason, it causes a practical problem: The front
seats are usually emptier, creating a gulf between the Lord’s
table and the Lord’s people. And latecomers stand in the back
rather than march up to the front where everyone can see that
they’re late.
Let’s show some hospitality here! Let’s fill the church up from
the front to the back, leaving the back rows for those who come
later or late or for young families with children. And…..let’s
fill each row from the center: If you’re the first one in the row,
don’t hug the end (unless you’re a minister and will need to get
in and out). Move into the middle so that others may come and
sit beside you.
Filling in the front seats first isn’t proud or arrogant. It’s part of
the ministry of hospitality that all of us who are baptized are
called to exercise. It’s a simple act of kindness that helps the
church to gather better around its Lord, so that we may give God
thanks and praise.
Sunday…Renewing Baptism
Whenever a group of people gather for a public event, it is usual
for them to identify themselves in some way. Uniforms, team
jackets or color-coded name tags announce to friends and
stranger alike common interests or origins. At Sunday Eucharist
we remind ourselves of our kinship with one another and with
Christ through baptism in the rite of blessing and sprinkling of
holy water. This rite, familiar to some as the asperges from the
pre-Vatican II liturgy (from the test that was chanted), calls to
mind our unikon with the death and resurrection of Jesus. The
revised ritual reminds us that the sprinkling rite is appropriate at
any Sunday liturgy, for it expresses the paschal character of
Sunday…every Sunday is a little Easter. It is particularly
appropriate during the Easter season and on feasts in which
baptismal images are highlighted.
After the sign of the cross and the greeting, the blessing and
sprinkling with holy water is actually the first option, and the
penitential rite is the second. The rite of sprinkling is simple:
The presider invites the assembly to pray silently, then blesses
the water. In some places, salt, a symbol of strength and flavor
and effectiveness, among other things, is added. Then the
assembly is blessed with water. The priest and other ministers
may walk through the assembly generously sprinkling the
people, or people may come forward in a procession and sign
themselves with the water. In either case, an abundant use of
water signifies God’s overflowing love and mercy. As in the
sacrament of baptism itself, many levels of meaning come into
play: Water signifies cleansing, protection from evil, newness
of life, forgiveness of sin and God’s saving deeds.
After the sprinkling rite and opening prayer, the liturgy of the
word begins. Immediately we do what baptized people are called
to do. We listen to God’s word, offer prayers for the needs of all,
give thanks and praise, and share in the body and blood of our
Lord. Conscious of our shared baptismal heritage, we are sent
forth to announce the good news which we ourselves have seen
and heard. The old Latin ending for Mass, Ite Missa Est, poorly
translated, “Go, the Mass is ended,” really should have been
translated, “Go, you are sent forth to make a difference.” That is
a much more fitting conclusion of Holy Mass.
From the “Hooray and Halleluia” Department…
During the summer some of our Girl Scouts from St. Peter were
very busy completing work on 21 decorated suitcases for
donation to foster children. As part of the parish’s involvement in
Fostering Faithful Families these girls decorated these suitcases
with themes ranging from Sponge Bob to princesses to teen idols.
The suitcases will be used to transport the clothes of foster
children to their foster homes or adoptive homes. The girls are
members of our present 8 th Grade class from St. Peter and in the
process they earned their Silver Award in Girl Scouting. Thanks,
girls, what a wonderful project that was…a true labor of love.
The girls from Girl Scout troop 2206 are: Anna Hesse, Abby
Skinner, Madeleine LaValle, Haley Williams, Addie Jaudes,
Natalie Mulligan, and Molly O’Brien. In addition another girl
scout from St. Peter, Katie Ferris, made blankets to go in the
suitcases. By the way all the suitcases were donated by
parishioners for the project. Way to go, girls! Thanks, too, to
Theresa Williams of our parish, the contact person for Fostering
Faithful Families, who distributed the finished suitcases to the
foster children through One Heart Ministries.
Girls, you made us all so very proud of you!
Don’t forget our new mantra: “Please come to Mass early
enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult. (The
Mass does not end until the final blessing). Worship
reverently enough not to distract. And dress proudly enough
not to offend.” Enjoy October, truly one of Missouri’s best
months. And….I’ll see you in church!
NO FISH FRY IN OCTOBER
There will be no Fish Fry the first Friday of October. There are
several reasons for this, not the least of which is falling attendance
over the last two years. We do plan to serve fish dinners all six
Fridays of this coming Lent as well as a couple other times. While
we don't want to lose money, profit is not our motive. Providing a
venue for parish fellowship is our goal. That is why we work hard to
keep our prices among the lowest in the area. Please watch the
bulletin for further updates. We are not going away.
ST. PETER BEYOND HOUSING MINISTRY NEWS
THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make our recent home
fix-up project a big success. We transformed the yard of a
Beyond Housing rental home in Webster Groves. We appreciate
our volunteers who worked that day and those who supported us
with snacks and lunch to give us the energy to complete our
project.
Check out our full page bulletin announcement for our upcoming
Trivia Night on November 6 and start getting your table put
together! This fun event is our major fundraiser for the year and
helps us support Beyond Housing in many ways. ($150 per table
of 10; soda and light snacks provided; bring your own drinks and
food.)
And we’re preparing for our annual Christmas activities,
including Breakfast with Santa for Beyond Housing kids on
Saturday, December 4 as well as Adopt a Family. Watch the
bulletin in the coming weeks for more details.
rely on relatives and friends for
support. But for some families,
there is no safety net. The Safe
Families for Children program
helps parents experiencing a
temporary crisis arrange for their children to stay with a loving
family until the crisis has passed. They are in need of families to
care for these children on a temporary basis. If you are interested
in becoming a Safe Family contact: Kristina Duce at Bethany
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
"Eucharistic contemplation...has an extraordinary
power of healing. In the desert God ordered Moses to
raise a bronze serpent on a pole. All those who were
bitten by poisonous snakes and then looked at the
bronze serpent were healed (cf. Nm 21:4-9). Jesus
applied the mysterious symbol of the bronze serpent
to himself (Jn 3:14). What we should do, then, when
afflicted by the venomous bites of pride, sensuality, and all the
other illnesses of the soul is not to get lost in vain considerations
or seek excuses, but to run before the Most Blessed Sacrament, to
look at the Host and let healing pass through the same organ
through which evil so often passes: our eyes."
(From This is My Body, by Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa).
The following Holy Hours are in need of an adorer/partner:
Tuesday 7:00PM
Correction - this meeting will not be a
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“My child, remember that you received what was good during
your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but
now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover,
between us and you a great chasm is established . . .”
(Luke 16:25-26)
When God created the world He declared that it was good and He
gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years
we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and
those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own
generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have
much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the
wrong side of the chasm in the next life.
