Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 22, 2012
The Whole Church Celebrates with You…
The Sacrament of Marriage
We are in the midst of the “wedding season” and so I thought a few
reflections on the Sacrament of Marriage might be a good idea.
“We’re getting Married!” With these few simple words, an
engaged couple announces the most important decision of their
lives. This decision affects not only the couple, but also their
families and friends. No longer is John just “our son,” “our
nephew” or “my college buddy.” No longer is Mary just “my
daughter,” “our cousin” or “my friend from work.” Now they are
also partners who have agreed to pledge their lives to each other
and form a new family.
As they gather around John and Mary at the wedding, these family
members and friends celebrate these changes in relationships.
When a wedding is celebrated in church, there is another level of
relationship beyond family and friends, and that involves God and
the Church. In their exchange of vows, the couple offers a visible
sign of God’s presence and love. It is an act of worship that takes
place in the midst of a Christian community. In living out their
vows, husband and wife share in Christ’s paschal mystery by dying
to their own desires so as to live for each other and their children.
Their marriage reflects Christ’s relationship with the Church and
creates a new family within the community of the Church.
A church wedding touches the couple, their families and friends in
an especially intimate way, but is also pertains to the local parish
and to the larger church. This is what the bishops at the Second
Vatican Council means when they said, “Liturgical services are not
private functions but are celebrations of the Church which is ‘the
sacrament of unity’” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 26).
Catholic weddings are parish liturgies and, as such, are often
announced in the parish bulletin. Weddings may even be celebrated
within a parish Sunday Mass. While one may need an invitation to
attend the reception, the wedding liturgy is a celebration of the
whole church and is open to all parishioners.
Preparing Yourselves to Celebrate Marriage
The months before a wedding are usually a time of intense planning
for the “big day.” Here are three things not to overlook in preparing
for a Catholic wedding:
1. In the Roman Catholic Church, the couple is the minister of the
sacrament of marriage. The bride and groom exchange vows to
each other. The priest or deacon serves as the Church’s chief
witness; he does not “pronounce them husband and wife.” Other
roles in a Catholic wedding include two additional witnesses ( the
“best man” and “maid or matron of honor”), lectors to proclaim the
scripture readings and intercessions, music ministers to lead the
assembly’s singing, and, if the wedding takes place within Mass,
additional ministers of communion might be needed.
2. Some things are essential for a Catholic wedding; others are not.
Essential things include the scripture readings, homily, statement of
intention (“Have you come here freely and without reservation to
give yourselves to each other in marriage?”), consent or exchange
of vows, and nuptial blessing. Things that are NOT essential
include seating guests of the bride and guests of the groom on
separate sides of the aisle, keeping the bride and groom apart before
the wedding, unrolling a white aisle runner before the entrance
procession, the lighting of a unity candle, and placing a flower
before the statue of the Blessed Mother,
3
3. There are no spectators at a Catholic wedding. The bishops at the
Second Vatican Council made “full, conscious, and active
participation” by all worshippers “the aim to be considered before all
else” in liturgy (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 14). Just as at
Sunday Mass, certain individuals fulfill various ministries within the
wedding liturgy, but the entire assembly of worshippers celebrates
the liturgy. When you go to a wedding, listen attentively to the
scriptures the couple has chosen, sing the music they have selected,
respond to the prayers in a strong voice. I am continually amazed at
a wedding liturgy how weak the responses are on the part of the
assembly. It often is such an oddity to me at a wedding or a funeral
that so many Catholics seem “thrown” by the liturgy. It appears
foreign or unfamiliar thus the responses become weak or worse, nonexistent.
The enthusiastic participation of the entire assembly of
worshippers is the best gift anyone can give to the couple on their
“big day.”
It is always so great when the couple is involved in the wedding
liturgy preparation and invests time and energy in choosing the Word
of God, the selection of the nuptial blessing, a gift for the poor, a
special prayer of the couple, the preparation of the intercessions and a
careful selection of the participants for the offertory procession. The
prayerful preparation of the wedding liturgy by the couple becomes a
true gift to their guests and the entire Church. It is so wonderful
when the couple invests as much time and care for the liturgy as they
have for the reception, the selection of the wedding party, and the
clothes to be worn that day.
The Search is On!!!!
We are on the threshold of beginning a new “class” for the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults, the RCIA. Our next session begins in
September. In the meantime we need candidates (those already
baptized in another Christian church but not in communion with the
Catholic Church) and Catechumens (those unbaptized and have had
not religious affiliation). Surveys have clearly shown that folks
come to the RCIA by a gentle invitation from us. Signs are great.
Information nights are terrific. Homilies are super - but the best way
and the most lasting way people come into the church is clearly by
you and me asking them to become a Catholic and join us in the faith.
We are ALL in the evangelization business. It is ALL of our
responsibility to propagate the Catholic Faith and to spread that faith
far and wide. So let’s not be bashful or timid about encouraging and
asking people we know…relatives, friends, co-workers, neighbors…
those who do not have a church at this time or have shown an interest
in our church, our parish. If someone you know has been asking
questions invite them to check us out.
For more information about the RCIA contact Linda Doyle, our
Coordinator of Faith Formation for Adults, at Ursuline Hall, 822-
What a summer! Please, Lord, a little rain would be so good!
Pray for our poor farmers and those who must work out in this
heat.
Father Mike gets home from his vacation in Germany tonight
and I leave today for my vacation in the Tetons and Yellowstone.
See you in a couple of weeks. Father Mike is in charge and I told
him NOT to sell the church…unless he gets a good price!
Peace and all good!
ROSARY FOR THE USA
In the May 18th issue of the St. Louis Review, there was an
article about a Catholic from Phoenix, Arizona who was deeply
concerned about the United States. While praying the rosary, he
realized that the 50 Hail Mary prayers could be said for our 50
States. He designated the first three decades as prayers intended
for the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches of our
government. The fourth is dedicated to state and local
government as well as police and firefighters. The fifth decade is
devoted to the U.S. military personnel.
Please join your fellow parishioners every Sunday at 4:45
(except holidays) in front of Mary’s statue to say the Rosary
for our country and our populace. The Gathering Area is
available if the weather is not favorable.
REMINDER: BACKPACKS ARE DUE
MONDAY JULY 23RD!!
Thank you for taking a backpack &
supply tag from the gathering space over
the past few weeks for children serviced
by St. Patrick’s Center. Please
remember to return your filled
backpack to 450 Burns Ave by Monday
ST. PATRICK CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS
Thank you to all who faithfully donate to the St. Patrick Mobile
Outreach Program. In June our generous parishioners donated
nearly 300 individual snacks and drinks to the program!! In
addition, we were able to donate 100 toothbrushes and toothpaste
to the program. The ultimate goal of the Mobile Outreach
Program is to encourage persons who are chronically homeless to
access agency programs that will lead them to permanent housing
and financial stability. In Fiscal Year 2011, two full-time
counselors developed trusting relationships with 163 people
living on the streets and provided mental health, psychiatric,
employment and financial guidance services to 60 clients.
Please keep this important ministry in mind on your next
shopping trip. Breakfast bars, granola type bars, chips, cookies,
water, and soda are some of the suggested donations. The Health
Department requires that all food items come prepackaged.
Donations are accepted everyday at 450 Burns Avenue,
Kirkwood. A green tub will be located on our front porch the first
week of the month and will be placed on the side of our house the
rest of the month. Call Jennifer Moritz 909-6756 with any
questions. Thank you for supporting this ministry!
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking
stick—no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” (Mark 6:8)
How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when
they ventured out to serve God. Today, we make our journey
through life more difficult because of all the material baggage
that we drag along. Yet, the more we can let go of, the freer we
are to serve God with love and joy.
Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic Church?
Then you might be interested in joining the RCIA process.
What do the initials RCIA stand for?
The initials stand for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.
What is the RCIA process?
It is a process or journey for individuals who desire to establish or
deepen their relationship with Our Lord, Jesus Christ and want to
learn more about the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The first step in this process is called the Inquiry or
Evangelization Period. It is a time for individuals who are
interested in learning more about the Catholic faith to begin to
explore it and surface questions. It is also a time when the Sacred
Scriptures will be introduced and discussed. This initial period is
very informal but provides information and formational
opportunities for those individuals who are looking to acquaint
themselves with the Catholic faith.
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL RECENT ACTIVITY
During the month of June the St. Vincent de Paul Society here at
St. Peter was able to help 31 families with food, transportation,
utilities, household needs and rent totaling $5,773. Foremost at
this time is trying to keep electricity on for our families. Higher
electric bills reflect the increased usage caused by the record high
temperatures. Please consider a donation in the form of the blue
envelopes in your parish envelope packets or by using the poor
boxes located in the gathering area and at the side doors. Thank
you for anything you can do. Please keep our clients and our
members in your prayers as we go about helping those in need.
STS. TERESA & BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY
“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”
Mother Teresa
St. Peter parish donated 1,038 items of food for the food pantry at
Sts. Teresa & Bridget for July. Thank you all very much.
PLEASE REMEMBER: When planning a summer gathering
ask your guests to bring a can or two of food to donate for those
that can't give or attend nice parties. Donations can be dropped
off all month.
DROP OFF LOCATION ~
Candy and John Behl, 319 East Adams, Kirkwood (block and a
half east of the YMCA). Please donate cans that are no larger
than 30 ounces, anything larger is difficult to carry for all of us.
STS. TERESA AND BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY . . .
For those of you who are not aware of why and how this food
pantry collection got started please read below:
After visiting with Fr. Gary Meier, then the pastor of Sts. Teresa
& Bridget (located on Grand & N. Market, St. Louis City), he
explained how his parish and community are in great need. They
have a food pantry that serves their area, open one day a week for
3 hours. Even though another county parish supplies canned
goods once a month, the high demand keeps their shelves bare.
They have had to reduce what they're able to give to those who
come for help to a bag that holds just enough food for 2 meals.
THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN. By collecting canned goods
MONTHLY we can help make other peoples' lives better and
respond to Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to
the monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our
home, placing it on the front porch.
DROP OFF LOCATION ~
Candy and John Behl, 319 East Adams, Kirkwood (block and a
half east of the YMCA). Please donate cans that are no larger than
30 ounces, anything larger is difficult to carry for all of us.
FOR YOUR QUILTING NEEDS . . .
Rely on St. Peter Quilters. We do patchwork and
embroidered tops. If necessary, we can assemble
embroidered blocks into beautiful quilt tops.
Also, baby quilts for sale.
For more information, call Theresa at 314-821-8433.
As further celebration of the “Year of Prayer,” St. Peter is
providing a Prayer of the Month for our parishioners to
detach and pray together as a family on a daily basis.
Prayer of the Month
July, 2012
A Prayer for a Family
O Dear Jesus,
I humbly implore You to grant Your special graces to our family.
May our home be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labor and faith.
I beg You, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us, absent and
present, living and dead.
O Mary,
Loving Mother of Jesus, and our Mother, pray to Jesus for our
family. For all the families of the world, to guard the cradle of
the newborn, the schools of the young, and their vocations.
Blessed Saint Joseph,
Holy guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by your prayers in all
the necessities of life. Ask of Jesus that special grace which He
granted to you, to watch over our home at the pillow of the sick
and the dying, so that with Mary and with you, heaven may find
our family unbroken in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Amen.
Blessed Are The . . .
The Applause of Heaven by Max Lucado 1999
Section Z
A chapter for each Beatitude, Lucado is the master storyteller
using true stories from the everyday to illustrate a Biblical truth.
His language allows the reader to see and feel a situation with
him.
The Beatitudes for Children by Rosemarie Gortler 2009
Section F
Each Beatitude is coupled with a kid-sized explanation. A family
interaction page follows so that kids and their parents can apply
the Lord's Beatitudes to their lives.
The Beatitudes in Modern Life edited by Margaret Garvey 1989
Section Z
Eight contributors, each addressing a Beatitude, take the
Beatitudes as the root of the gospel message and present options
for change in our lives. They speak of times, places, individuals
and groups – each examples of the presence and relevance of the
Beatitudes now.
Blessed Are The Peacemakers: Ten Steps To Peace by Mary E.
Latela 2003
Section Z
Latela rejects the notion of powerlessness. Peacemaking begins
with the individual and then flows outward. When we are at
peace with ourselves and with God, we can rest comfortably with
the past and move forward in peace.
The Ladder of the Beatitudes by Jim Forest 1999
Section Z
“Drawing on stories from the lives of the saints, scripture and
everyday life, Forest opens up the mysteries of the Beatitudes.
These ancient blessings, with which Christ began his Sermon on
the Mount, are like rungs on a ladder, each leading to the next and
up to the Kingdom of God.”
