Baptism of the Lord January 9, 2011
From Bethlehem to Jordan…
The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is the last day of the
Christmas season. At daily prayer this day, the Orthodox
churches pray:
Let us assemble in spirit, O Faithful,
at the streams of the Jordan
That we might behold
A great and mighty wonder.
We shall see the Creator of all
Made manifest
as he comes to be baptized.
Let us pass, O faithful,
from Bethlehem to Jordan.
For behold, the light
which came into the darkness
there begins to overcome the night.
Find out the date of your baptism. Ask a relative, or write to the
parish that baptized you. Write the date on the new calendar.
Celebrate the anniversary this year by participating in the
Eucharist. Spend some time reflecting on your Christian
mission - - your part in spreading God‟s love.
When Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water and heard a
heavenly voice say, “You are my beloved; with you I am well
pleased.” Listen for this voice today whenever you “come out
of the water” – the shower, the snow or rain, the swimming
pool, the sudsy kitchen sink. Glory in heaven and peace on
earth, now and forever! Alleluia! Amen!
The Newest Saint of January…
Saint Andre Bessette…January 6 th
He didn‟t die a martyr‟s death. He was too sickly, weak, and
awkward to do any work except as a porter. Yet, at his death in
1937, over a million pilgrims filed past his coffin. And
thousands upon thousands came to Montreal, Canada each year
to ask the intercession of Saint Joseph and St. Andre at the great
oratory built by the humble little porter of Notre Dame-du-Sacre
-Coeur.
Born near Montreal in 1845, Alfred Bessette was orphaned by
age twelve. He is the Church‟s newest saint, having been
canonized in Rome this past year. Although his frail condition
made it impossible to find gainful employment, his pastor,
seeing the intensity of his spiritual life, introduced him to the
Congregation of the Holy Cross.
In 1870, bearing a letter of recommendation from his pastor
stating, “I am sending you a saint,” Alfred asked to be accepted
into the novitiate. In the novitiate he finally learned to read.
Alfred eventually memorized long passages of scripture,
including all four gospel accounts of the passion of Christ.
However, his health remained so poor that he was only allowed
to make final vows in 1872 through the intervention of the
bishop of Montreal; he took the name Andre‟, after his pastor.
For most of his life, he served as porter of the College of Notre-
Dame-du-Sacre‟ Coeur in Cote-des Nieges, near Montreal. He
is quoted as saying: “At the end of my novitiate, my superiors
showed me the door, and I stayed there for forty years.”
3
It soon became evident that Brother Andre‟ had been given
extraordinary gifts of healing and counseling. Countless are the
stories of healings told by students and visitors alike. Numbers
grew so large, so quickly that opposition to his ministry arose:
partly out of jealousy and skepticism and partly due to fears of
contagion among the masses of sick seeking his help.
Brother Andre‟s dream was to build a chapel dedicated to his
favorite saint, St. Joseph, as a spiritual center for those who came
for help. He eventually obtained permission to raise the money to
build on land on Mount Royal that the Congregation of the Holy
Cross had purchased in 1896. First, in 1904, came a small shelter,
15 by 18 feet. But by 1966 it had grown into a basilica.
On January 6, 1937, the sickly Brother Andre‟ died at the
advanced age of 91. Brother Andre‟s simplicity gives hope to
those who feel that a lowly state in life – whether physical,
financial, or educational – might limit their personal gift to the
world. In today‟s economy-driven culture, his life stands as a
counter-sign to those who would define power in terms of might
and economic prowess. We celebrate his memory each year on
January 6 th .
From the “Hooray and Halleluia” Department…
Recently it was brought to my attention that Matt Schoelch, a
junior at St. Louis University High School and the son of Suzie
and Rob Schoelch, was chosen from among all the students at
SLUH as the student that embodies what the Jesuits call “magis,”
which is a Jesuit phrase that refers to doing “more” for Christ and
for others, through thoughts, words and actions. Matt has been
recognized by the SLUH community because of his commitment
to do “more” for others on a regular basis, and not just when it is
convenient for him.
Since his freshman year, Matt has somehow found the time to
undertake a variety of service work amid an already busy
schedule. In addition he is on the honor roll and participates on
the golf team. He works at his family‟s business several days a
week and yet, despite all that, still assists with SLUH‟s service
projects such as “I Skate” which helps children with Downs
Syndrome to master ice skating and “Keen” which is a program
that provides kids with disabilities the opportunity to participate
in recreational activities in a safe and enjoyable environment. He
also helps out at the Sts. Peter and Paul Shelter in Soulard and
tutors students at Loyola Academy and Central Catholic twice a
month. And….this spring Matt plans on spending his Spring
Break with 40 other SLUH students helping others through
“Mission Appalachian”, a SLUH project to reach out to the poor
and needy in West Virginia.
Wow Matt! When do you sleep? Congratulations for being so
recognized by your SLUH community and keep up the good work
of living out your baptismal commitment of service above self.
Oh, and did I mention that Matt was a graduate from St. Peter
School, too, the Class of 2008! Matt, you make St. Peter proud.
With Christmas over we are now settling into the long winter.
Enjoy its finer moments like sharing a good meal by the
fireplace or in a cozy restaurant. Curling up with a good
book or watching a great movie while sitting in your favorite
chair or inviting some friends over for a night of cards or a
game and a dinner of stew or homemade soup. Oh, yes,
winter has its miserable moments but it isn’t all bad.
I’ll see you in church!
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11
The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and
opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should
all try to embrace. Each of us is called to open our gifts before
Jesus, offering Him what He needs. We can remember that we
are called to share our gifts by keeping one of the Magi from our
Nativity set on our desk or dresser as a year-round reminder to
bring our gifts to Jesus.
Our next monthly rosary -
Monday, January 24th
Have you ever wanted to say the rosary as a family but just
thought your kids were too little or would not pay attention?
Maybe you don't even remember how to say the rosary but might
if you were reminded. The Young Families group at St. Peter
Parish has decided to make saying the rosary a true family event!
We will meet in church the 4th Monday of each month from
6:30-7:00PM and say the rosary for a special intention. All you
need to bring is a rosary and your family. There is no need to
worry that your kids might be loud or not pay attention, all will
add to the overall meaningful prayer our families can offer.
FR. GARY'S PANTRY NEEDS HELP!
THE NEXT DELIVERY WILL BE ON JANUARY 17TH
St Peter Church is a parish of givers. Our first year donating food
to Fr. Gary's parish food pantry has fed so many hungry people.
Our church delivered over 22,796 food items in 2010, we are
caring for those who are unable to provide for themselves.
Fr.Gary sent St. Peter a "Thank you for all that we do".
For those of you who are not aware of why and how this food
pantry collection got started please read below:
After visiting with Fr. Gary Meier, former associate at St. Peter,
now pastor of Sts. Teresa & Bridget (located on Grand & N.
Market, St. Louis City), he explained how his parish and
community are in great need. They have a food pantry that serves
their area, open one day a week for 3 hours. Even though another
county parish supplies canned goods once a month, the high
demand keeps their shelves bare. They have had to reduce what
they're able to give to those who come for help to a bag that holds
just enough food for 2 meals.
THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN. By collecting canned goods
MONTHLY we can help make other peoples' lives better and
respond to Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to
the monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our
home, placing it on the front porch. A list of items needed
and delivery dates is located in The Gathering Area in the
back of church.
DROP OFF LOCATION ~
Candy and John Behl, 319 East Adams, Kirkwood (block and a
half east of the YMCA). Please donate cans that are no larger
than 30 ounces, anything larger is difficult to carry for all of us.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
