Preparing Your Wedding Liturgy…
Many engaged couples schedule their weddings a year or more in
advance. The Archdiocese of St. Louis requires a couple to contact
the priest at least six months before the wedding so that the
necessary preparations can be made and a firm date set for the
marriage in church. Some reception facilities require at least this
much advance notice, and the myriad details involved in wedding
planning can easily occupy a couple for the better part of a year!
For a couple planning to marry in the church, a major focus during
this time is their preparation for the sacrament of marriage. Using a
variety of formats, a parish’s or archdiocese’s marriage preparation
program helps couples prepare for the lifelong covenant they will
establish at their wedding. The couple’s reflections on their faith
and the Church’s faith concerning marriage are an important
starting point for their preparations for the wedding liturgy.
In St. Louis couples must first complete the Foccus questionnaire.
Here in St. Peter parish the Foccus questionnaire is usually
administered by the priest who will be witnessing the marriage.
The questionnaire is designed to help the couples reflect on the
important values of Christian marriage and of the Catholic faith as
they prepare for their wedding. The questionnaire is not designed
as a “hoop” for the couple to jump through in order to process to the
altar. In fact, it is an aide for them which ultimately shows them
their strengths and their weaknesses in discussing and reflecting on
these important gospel values as they approach their marriage.
Upon completion of the Foccus process then the couple must
complete a marriage preparation experience. There are three
marriage programs from which a couple may choose. There are the
traditional Pre-Cana sessions provided by the Archdiocese of St.
Louis. These are usually held in a parish hall and attended by
approximately 25 to 50 other couples preparing for marriage. There
are usually from four to six sessions that make up a Pre-Cana class
and are led by a priest, a couple, and a lawyer. They cover topics
ranging from the call to be a sacrament to communication and
problem-solving.
Engaged Encounter Weekends are another program that a couple
may choose. These take place on a weekend beginning on Friday
evening and continuing until Sunday afternoon. There are two sites
for such weekends: King’s House Retreat in Belleville, Illinois or
the Marianist Retreat Center in Eureka, Missouri. At these
experiences the couple stays at the retreat house for the weekend.
There is a format of talks given by a priest and a married couple, a
question to consider and then written and verbal reflection time for
the individual couples to dialogue. It is an intense one weekend
marriage preparation time and works great for couples with tight or
challenging work or study schedules.
The final marriage prep program is called “Evenings for the
Engaged” and we are very fortunate that we have such a program
here in St. Peter Parish. At present we have about ten couples
trained in this process. The engaged couples meet in the host
couple’s home for a six week period and basically the host couple
shares their marriage with the engaged couple as mentors through
pre-planned topics and discussion points. The topics are similar to
the other programs but are much more personal in nature. It is a
one-on-one program and more familial. The meetings are
scheduled at mutually agreeable times.
In addition each couple must attend a session at a Catholic hospital
on Natural Family Planning, meet with the wedding coordinator,
Kathy Herrmann, and our music coordinator for weddings, Darren
Modde. The final session with the priest usually involves the
liturgy planning as well as filling out the necessary paper work for
the Archdiocese of St. Louis. A recent copy of the Catholic party’s
3
baptismal certificate is necessary at this point, too.
The Church’s Rite of Marriage presents the couple as the minister of
the sacrament of marriage and invites their participation in the
preparation of the wedding liturgy. In conjunction with the priest or
deacon who will preside at the wedding, the couple chooses among
several options for the various prayer texts and scripture readings that
will be proclaimed at the wedding liturgy. Individuals need to be
asked to serve as ushers, lectors, and ministers of the Eucharist. We
provide the couple with a book called Together for Life to assist the
couple and guide them in all of this.
Like the other aspects of a wedding, the wedding liturgy is more apt
to be free of anxiety and open to genuine celebration if it has been
prepared well in advance of the wedding day. By preparing the
wedding liturgy together, the couple has a terrific opportunity to
share their faith with each other, to explore the Church’s faith
concerning marriage in the scriptures, to discover the ways in which
their families celebrated special events, and to practice the kind of
selfless concern for each other that will nurture and sustain the lifelong
covenant of marriage.
Sister Rita Retires…
After fifteen years as our bookkeeper Sister Rita Bruegenhagen is
retiring and we will miss her greatly. She has been a presence in our
office and on our staff since 1997 when she came to us from the
Archdiocesan Finance Office. Her concern to detail, her
organizational and financial skills plus her sense of integrity made
her a trusted confidant, a loyal friend, and an invaluable part of our
staff. For me personally she was my “sounding board.” I would
throw out ideas or responses to issues first to her to see her reaction.
I always knew I would get an honest, faith-filled and thought-out
response. I so valued her wisdom and her answers.
Sister is a member of the Sisters of Loretto and has been in the
Loretto community for over 50 years. Over her 50 plus years as a
Sister of Loretto she has taught in Kansas City and in parish schools
of religion in Texas and at White Sands Missile Range in New
Mexico, been a finance director at Cardinal Ritter Institute in St.
Louis and the Catholic Education Office in Denver, the business
manager at Incarnate Word Academy in Normandy, the treasurer for
the southern province of the Loretto Sisters in Texas, and campus
ministry work in Denver. She is an accomplished cook and loves
history and enjoys plays at the Repertory Theatre at Webster
University.
I always knew that Sister Rita was a very intelligent person and filled
with much wisdom. However it was not until very recently that I
discovered why I liked her from the very beginning and why she was
so darn smart. She is a “Domer,” that is, she obtained her master’s
degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame
in South Bend. Need I say anything more about this great lady! I
think not…that says it all!
Sister Rita! You are an absolutely wonderful person and St. Peter is
certainly the better for your great presence among these past 15
years. You have challenged us. You have kept us honest. You
have set a standard of excellence. We always knew where you stood
on any issue brought before you. You have made us better persons
and we loved working beside you and with you. You are women of
great faith, great humor, and great integrity. May God continue to
bless your vocation as a Sister of Loretto. May God continue to bless
you with good health and well-being. We’ll see you at the REP or
maybe at a Schnuck’s or Dierberg’s or Amici’s Restaurant…and
hopefully, every once in a while we’ll see you at St. Peter Church
where you will always be welcome.
RCIA
Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic Church?
Then you might be interested in joining the RCIA process.
What do the initials RCIA stand for?
The initials stand for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.
What is the RCIA process?
It is a process or journey for individuals who desire to establish or
deepen their relationship with Our Lord, Jesus Christ and want to
learn more about the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The first step in this process is called the Inquiry or
Evangelization Period. It is a time for individuals who are
interested in learning more about the Catholic faith to begin to
explore it and surface questions. It is also a time when the Sacred
Scriptures will be introduced and discussed. This initial period is
very informal but provides information and formational
opportunities for those individuals who are looking to acquaint
themselves with the Catholic faith.
Inquiry Sessions will be held on Thursday, August 23 rd and 30 th
from 7 PM until 8:30 PM.
R.C.I.A. Sessions begin Sunday, September 9 th from 9:00 AM
ROSARY FOR THE USA
In the May 18th issue of the St. Louis Review, there was an
article about a Catholic from Phoenix, Arizona who was deeply
concerned about the United States. While praying the rosary, he
realized that the 50 Hail Mary prayers could be said for our 50
States. He designated the first three decades as prayers intended
for the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches of our
government. The fourth is dedicated to state and local
government as well as police and firefighters. The fifth decade is
devoted to the U.S. military personnel.
Please join your fellow parishioners every Sunday at 4:45
(except holidays) in front of Mary’s statue to say the Rosary
for our country and our populace. The Gathering Area is
available if the weather is not favorable.
