Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2011
The Ambry…things of the church
The word ambry is derived from the Latin amarium (cupboard
or chest) and signifies the place where the vessels of oil used in
celebrating sacraments are kept. These oils are blessed by the
archbishop at the Mass of Chrism celebrated during Holy Week
and are brought to each parish church for the various rites of
anointing. The three oils signify the universal charisms of the
Church for initiating (oil of catechumens), healing (oil of the
sick) and consecrating (chrism).
As early as the sixth century, ambries were used to hold
consecrated communion bread as well as the oils, and were often
located in the base of the altar. By the thirteenth century,
separate locked ambries were used for the Eucharist only. This
was an accepted practice by the sixteenth century, when this
separate container was called a tabernacle. In the meantime,
smaller amounts of the oils were stored in the sacristy, or in a
simple wall niche or recessed cupboard known as an ambry.
As with all other vessels used in the liturgy today, the vessels for
the oils should be of a quality and design that speak of the
importance of the ritual actions. The vessels should hold an
ample supply of the oils, thus symbolizing the generosity of
God’s gift. The gestures of anointing can be performed with
similar generosity of touch. The display of beautiful vessels
reminds the community of the reverence it gives to its members
as they are welcomed in baptism, confirmed in the spirit, and
anointed in their illness. To be anointed is to participate in an
ancient biblical and ecclesial rite of blessing, and to enter into
the mission of Jesus Christ, the anointed one of God.
The tabernacle…the things of the church…again
The word tabernacle derives from the Latin tabernaculum
(tent), and recalls the Jewish “meeting tent,” which housed the
ark of the covenant and thus embodied the presence of God
among the people. In Catholic churches today, the tabernacle
houses communion bread ( the Body of Christ) that has been
consecrated at the liturgy of the Eucharist, the Mass. The
practice of reserving the Eucharist dates back in some places to
the earliest days. In the second century, a small amount of
consecrated communion bread was placed in an ambry or a pyx,
often shaped like a casket or a dove. This vessel was small
enough to be carried to the homes of those who were unable to
attend the community’s Eucharist. This was the only reason for
reservation. Devotion to the reserved Eucharist grew during the
Middle Ages when the reception of communion declined. By
the sixteenth century, the custom of a fixed container for the
reserved Eucharist – the tabernacle as part of the main altar –
was in place; in 1614 it became prescribed practice for most
places.
The normative guidelines of the Church today indicate that the
tabernacle be placed elsewhere than on the altar, and never on
the altar used for the liturgy. An appropriate setting would be
on a pillar, in a wall niche, on a freestanding table or pedestal
near the altar or even in a special chapel set apart from the main
sanctuary area. Such a setting lends itself for private devotion of
the faithful, too. The tabernacle in its modern setting still recalls
the ancient image of a house for the divine presence, and
reminds the assembly of those in the parish who are confined to
their households, waiting for the ministry of those who have
celebrated the Eucharist.
3
The tabernacle is made of noble materials, giving it a quiet
dignity as a symbol of an ever-present God. A lamp burns nearby
in silent witness of this mystery of the real presence of our God.
Year of Prayer at St. Peter Parish…
How is the ACTS retreat run?
The retreat is run by your fellow St. Peter parishioners who have
themselves participated in an ACTS retreat. The men run the
men’s retreats and the women run the women’s retreats. The
team for the retreat spend approximately 13 -15 weeks prior to the
retreat preparing for it. They meet weekly and prepare spiritually
for the retreat. They handle all the planning and logistics for the
weekend retreat. During their weekly meetings they pray, prepare
the talks to be given on the weekend, and go over the practical
matters for the smooth running of the retreat itself, and socialize
with each other. By the time of the weekend itself, they have
formed a close bond with each other and model for the retreatants
the look and the feel of Christian community.
As of this writing the women’s ACTS retreat in September is
filled up. For the men’s ACTS retreat, September 29 th to October
2 nd there are still places available. So guys, give yourself a major
treat and sign up for the Men’s ACTS Retreat in September.
I promise you that you will not be disappointed or regret the
experience. It’s the blessing you have been waiting for…really.
Call Linda Doyle at Ursuline Hall, 822-1347 for more
information or for a registration form.
All of our ACTS retreats are at the Mercy Center in Frontenac.
The cost is $195 per person and begins (the men’s retreat) the
evening of Thursday, September 29 th and ends at the 11:00 am
Mass at St. Peter the following Sunday, October 2 nd . If cost is a
factor we can help you so please, don’t let money keep you from
a retreat.
School Bells ring at St. Peter School this week! We open this
Monday, August 22 nd , for the 148 th time. We are the oldest
parochial school in Kirkwood and this part of St. Louis
County, too. In addition, our Parish School of Religion opens
good parents who entrust their children to our care this year.
And may the Holy Spirit be our guide as we begin this new
year of grace called 2011- 2012.
Have a great week and I’ll see you in church!
Heaven Is For Real by Todd Burpo. This is a little boy’s
forever change the way you think of eternity. You’ll find it in
section “Z” of the library.
The First Paul by Marcus Borg & John D. Crossan. Meet Paul
again for the first time. In this book Paul is situated in his firstcentury
Left To Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza with Steve Erwin. The
author lost most of her family during the 1994 genocide in
Rwanda. Four years later, she emigrated to the U.S. and began
working at the U.N. in New York City. In 2007 she established
the Left to Tell Charitable Fund, which helps support Rwandan
Orphans.
The Third Testament by John Eklund. This is a novel about a
widower, a professor at a small Catholic College, who has a
dream telling him that he has been chosen by God to record the
next testament of the Bible. His entire world is turned upside
down when he is served a summons and then finds out his
daughter’s health is in jeopardy. Fred finds that writing is his
only solace. And so he creates a treasure for all Christians.
These are just some of the books we will have on display on
August 21st.

STS. TERESA & BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY
“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”
Mother Teresa
St. Peter parish donated 1,190 cans and boxes of food to
Sts. Teresa & Bridget food pantry. We have made a big
difference for those that are hungry. Please donate cans that are
no larger than 30oz, anything larger is difficult to carry for all of
us.
Next delivery date is SEPTEMBER 19th, see you then.
Thank You
DROP OFF LOCATION: Candy and John Behl, 319 East
Adams, Kirkwood (block and a half east of the YMCA). Please
donate cans that are no larger than 30 ounces, anything larger is
difficult for us to carry.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
Candy and John Behl 965-3390
For those of you who are not aware of why and how this food
pantry collection got started please read below:
When visiting with Fr. Gary Meier, former associate at St. Peter,
now pastor of Sts. Teresa & Bridget (located on Grand & N.
Market, St. Louis City), he explained how his parish and
community are in great need. They have a food pantry that serves
their area, open one day a week for 3 hours. Even though another
county parish supplies canned goods once a month, the high
demand keeps their shelves bare. They have had to reduce what
they're able to give to those who come for help to a bag that holds
just enough food for 2 meals.
THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN. By collecting canned goods
MONTHLY we can help make other peoples' lives better and
respond to Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to
the monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our
home, placing it on the front porch. A list of items needed
and delivery dates is located in The Gathering Area in the
back of church.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.”
Romans 11:29
God has a special mission in mind for each of us and He has
given us the gifts that we need to accomplish that mission. We
are called to be good stewards by using the gifts that God has
given us to do the work that God has planned for us alone. If we
deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then
some part of God’s work will be left undone.
