The National Science Foundation
S-STEM Scholarship Program
Through a grant from the National Science Foundation, Marymount University provides scholarships
for students majoring in Biology, Information Technology, or Mathematics under its S-STEM
(Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program. For 2012, the
S-STEM scholarship will be awarded exclusively to transfer students who will start at Marymount as
sophomores or juniors.
In addition to the monetary award, S-STEM program members will have the opportunity to
participate in such academic enrichment activities and community building experiences as
lunches with STEM faculty members, site visits to STEM industries to explore career options, and
opportunities to engage in research with faculty. While some level of financial need is necessary to
receive an S-STEM scholarship, applicants who do not demonstrate need may still be invited to join
the program and reap its many academic benefits.
S-STEM scholarships are awarded competitively and are based on a full review of the applicant’s
academic record, standardized test scores, career and educational goals, financial need, and completed
scholarship application.
Multiple S-STEM scholarships are awarded each year, and the scholarship offers up to $10,000 per
year, depending on the student’s demonstrated financial need. The award will be reviewed annually
and may be renewed for two or three years of undergraduate study, depending on the student’s class
status upon transfering. The student must remain in good academic standing to maintain the award.
The following criteria are taken into consideration in selecting students for the program:
• a record of strong academic performance
• admission for full-time study in one of the following degree programs at Marymount University:
Biology, Biology with Secondary Education teaching licensure, Information Technology
(Computer Science track), Mathematics, or Mathematics with Secondary Education teaching
licensure
• interest in a career working in, teaching, or doing research in mathematics or the sciences
• U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
submission date
ESSAY
NSF S-STEM scholarships are awarded to highly qualified students who plan to study Biology, Information Technology (Computer Science track), or
Mathematics, with the intent to pursue careers in these fields.
In essay form on a separate sheet of paper, please describe your related experiences in the sciences, technology, and/or mathematics (for example,
participation in science fairs, summer camps, and/or clubs; research; certifications). In addition, explain your professional goals. The committee
will be looking for evidence of self-motivation and determination. If applicable, you may address any portion of your academic career that, in your
opinion, does not adequately reflect your abilities.
LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
Please submit one letter of recommendation, preferably from a science, mathematics, or technology teacher, that addresses your ability to work with
others and your dedication to and aptitude in your STEM field.
OTHER MATERIALS
Because S-STEM scholarships are awarded based on need, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which determines
your eligibility for federal financial aid. For instructions, visit www.fafsa.ed.gov. For the FAFSA, you will need MU’s school code: 003724.
You are encouraged to submit other academically relevant materials that you think will help the selection committee in determining your academic
potential. This may include evidence of participation in extracurricular activities such as science fairs, team-building experiences, or other projects.
I certify that the above information is complete and accurate and that I am the author of the attached essay.
