Dr. Trowbridge specializes <strong>in</strong> 15 th and 16 th century art from the Low<br />

Countries. He has published several essays on this subject and<br />

presented numerous papers at <strong>in</strong>ternational conferences. Dr. Trowbridge<br />

is currently prepar<strong>in</strong>g a book on art and theater <strong>in</strong> late-medieval Bruges.<br />

DESTINATION: BRUSSELS<br />

In the 15 th and 16 th centuries, the Renaissance was happen<strong>in</strong>g not<br />

only <strong>in</strong> Italy, but also <strong>in</strong> the north of Europe, specifically <strong>in</strong> the<br />

economic powerhouses of Bruges and Ghent, centers of bank<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and trade <strong>in</strong> the Low Countries. This Northern Renaissance <strong>in</strong> the<br />

arts, fueled by wealthy Flemish merchants, was exemplified by<br />

the works of Jan van Eyck, considered one of the best Northern<br />

European pa<strong>in</strong>ters of the 15 th century, and Pieter Bruegel,<br />

a master pa<strong>in</strong>ter of the 16 th century. This course will take<br />

<strong>Marymount</strong> students to Belgium to study pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs by these<br />

and other master pa<strong>in</strong>ters of the Low Countries dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

15 th and 16 th centuries. With Brussels as a base of operations,<br />

students will take side trips to Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, and<br />

Leuven to view works of art <strong>in</strong> museums and churches.<br />

Field trips to view pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs from the Low Countries on exhibit <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC,<br />

galleries and museums will also be part of the course. In addition, students will<br />

learn about contemporary Belgian culture and have the opportunity to take a noncredit<br />

course <strong>in</strong> basic French.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

<strong>FA</strong> <strong>410</strong> <strong>Topics</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>History</strong> (3 credits)<br />

This class is a sem<strong>in</strong>ar-style course designed to take advantage of art <strong>in</strong> the Wash<strong>in</strong>gton-<br />

Baltimore area, a region that has a particularly rich collection of 15 th and 16 th century<br />

Netherlandish pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs. The first seven weeks of the course will provide an overview of art<br />

from this period, and the class will take field trips to view pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs from the Low Countries<br />

on exhibit <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC, museums.<br />

The course will then augment its study of those works with others to be <strong>in</strong>vestigated <strong>in</strong><br />

Belgium dur<strong>in</strong>g Spr<strong>in</strong>g Break, from a base <strong>in</strong> Brussels. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the class will then meet<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g the Belgium trip to share experiences and complete the coursework.<br />

Prerequisites: EN 102 and <strong>FA</strong> 202, or permission of <strong>in</strong>structor.<br />

PROGRAM COST<br />

The program fee of $650 <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

• round-trip economy-class <strong>in</strong>ternational airfare<br />

• double- or triple-occupancy accommodations<br />

• ground transportation and entrance fees to all required site visits<br />

The Center for Global Education will register a student<br />

for the <strong>FA</strong> <strong>410</strong> class after he or she has<br />

successfully submitted the onl<strong>in</strong>e study<br />

abroad application and obta<strong>in</strong>ed faculty<br />

director approval.<br />

Please note that enrollment is limited to 16 students.<br />

Full-time students do not need to pay additional tuition<br />

for this course if they are registered for no more than<br />

18 credits dur<strong>in</strong>g the spr<strong>in</strong>g semester, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

course. Full-time students enrolled <strong>in</strong> more than 18 credits<br />

are subject to over-enrollment fees.<br />
