4. Guest Speaker(s):
Item
Action
a) Warwick Seeney (Fabrication Manager) from Ullrich Alumininum, Hamilton,
delivered a very interesting presentation around the design and production
standards associated with the manufacture of industrial rated ladders. Load
ratings and concern for the import of ladders into the New Zealand market from
overseas was also raised. Ladders that claim to be manufactured to meet the
current ASNZS 1892:1996 standard, but during load testing fail and fall well
short of the standard. This poses a real concern around ladder safety and for
anyone using ladders or engaging contractors that use ladders. Warwick
advised all ladders should be checked on a regular basis to assess condition
and suitability including service and repair. For more information please
contact Warwick at wseeney@uacl.co.nz .
5. General Business:
Item
Action
a) Labour Group Update John Mayne informed the group, decisions and
outcomes where being awaited from the recent government Workplace Health
and Safety review. Some of the feedback was focused on the following:
• The Labour Group may become an independent body similar to the HSE in the
UK
• Specialist workplace inspectors would be established with appropriate training
for high risk sectors
• Increase in enforcement activity centred around persons carrying the duties of
Principle and those who hold higher level authority regarding promoting the
right level of safety for business to operate profitably and safely.
The government response and recommendations should be known in the New
Year.
b) ACC Update . No one available from ACC
c) Site Safe update The CEO of Site Safe NZ, Mr Garry Menhennet will be
stepping down from the post in the New Year. Recruitment has begun to find a
replacement and this will be made known when a decision has been finalised.
The contractor assessment tool, AppCon, currently being used to assess
construction contractors involved in the Christchurch rebuild, will be rolled
across the country in the New Year.
