1. Soft Landing System: Colin Wilding (Fall-Pac NZ Ltd) 0800 6528099
The Fall-Pac soft landing system complies with the Best Practice Guidelines for
Working at Height to reduce/minimise the risk of injury from falls up to heights of 2.8m
(Double layer for heights up to 5.6m).
The impact cushioning system has been fully independently tested at Health & Safety
Laboratories who carried out over 300 impact tests, using 90% anthropomorphic
dummy (Crash test dummies) with accelerometer fitted along the spinal channel
The Fall-Pac units can be linked together using the interlocking fasteners that come
attached to each one. Once fastened together it isn’t possible to fall between them.
They can be used in any area, enclosed or out in the open such as:
• Stairwells
• Lift shafts
• Rib infills
• Trenches
• Deliveries/laydown areas
Hireage is $2 - $3 /day/unit
2. Prescription Safety Glasses: Peter Gates (HOYA)
With an aging workforce HOYA have recognised the increasing need for employers to
provide prescription safety glasses for their staff.
They have developed a web site where employers can easily arrange for their staff to
be supplied with prescription safety glasses according to a predetermined range of
options agreed to by the employer.
The employer decides the extent of its eyewear Policy with HOYA. i.e. what it will pay
for in terms of lens types, lens treatments and types of frames. An employee is able to
pay for any lens/frame variations to their employer’s Policy.
Arrangements for setting up the employer on-line ordering system can be made through
NZ Safety or an optician.
Online ordering via the HOYA web site:
A Company’s policies in
relation to product
entitlement for employees
are controlled through this
4. Matter arising from previous meeting:
Item
Action
5. General Business:
Item
Action
1. Fletcher Ladder Policy: Grant Wilson said an analysis of accidents showed many
injuries were from ladders so they decided to trial a “ladder free site” with their ASB
project in the City.
Subcontractors were advised of the Policy at prestart meetings, including 2 nd & 3 rd tier
subs. They were given a work at height checklist to identify height work and to help
decide on equipment options such as work platforms, podium platforms, mobile
scaffolds (and possibly EWPs?).
Initially a lot of extra supervision was required until contractors got used to the Policy.
Anyone who thought they could only use a ladder had to discuss their concerns with the
site manager who would make the final decision on the most practicable solution.
The trial was considered a success so will be rolled out on all new projects with the
expectation Fletcher would be a ladder free company by Xmas.
2. Mainzeal Safety Glasses Policy: Maarten T said that all new projects would require
workers to wear safety glasses to reduce eye injuries. Chris P/Dominion said they were
adopting the same Policy but as of 1 st April 2013.
3. Industrial Ladders: Maarten T said Mainzeal will require, as of the 1 st Jan 2013, that
all “Industrial” ladders to be rated at least 150 kg. They are now in the process of
advising contractors of this future requirement.
4. Industry Steering Group – Passport Renewal: AJ Staples advised that he and
several others were part of a group looking at training options for those not renewing
their Passports two yearly. One option being considered might be a four yearly renewal
with a selection of on-site modules in between. (Steering group members:- AJ
Staples/Hawkins, Paul Uttley & Steve Benson/Mainzeal, Nick Stenson/Fletcher, Tony
Rigg/HEB, Bernard McLennan/MJH Engineering, Mike Lodge/Formco, Messrs Parker,
Mead & Wilson/Site Safe).
5. Swift Lift failures: George W/MBIE Labour mentioned that there had been a number of
swift lift failures and was wondering whether industry knew why.
Several attendees agreed they don’t always work properly and that the remote release
can’t be relied upon so either a retractable anchored above the crane hook or cherry
pickers are commonly used to release the lifting gear. Reid was to be consulted to
determine why remote releases weren’t working reliably.
J Buse
6. Scissor hoist incident: AJ/Hawkins mentioned they had experienced a scissor hoist
that broke a stub axil. It was within the 6 month certification period but stub axil
inspections aren’t part of the 6 month inspection regime.
7. Safety Week BBQ: It was confirmed that the ACC Safety Week was the first week in
Oct (Mon 1 st – Fri 5 th ) Several members expressed interest with some prepared to
supply own sausages etc with Site Safe, ACC & MBIE Labour representatives attending
as available.
Various site BBQ times were suggested, mainly 10am & 12pm and no longer than 1
hour. Individual companies to contact J Buse ( jbuse@sitesafe.org.nz ) with site contact
details and preferred date/times.
