EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR STATISTICS ON VISITOR ARRIVALS Source of Data Visitors arriving in Singapore are required to complete prescribed disembarkation/ embarkation cards which serve as the source of statistics on visitor arrivals and departures. The accuracy of figures pertaining to the characteristics of visitors therefore depends on how accurately visitors complete these cards. Definitions visitor arrivals All visitors are classified by country of residence unless otherwise stated. Total visitor arrivals include all visitors coming by air and sea and non-Malaysian citizens coming by land. The term "ASEAN" stands for "Association of South East Asian Nations" and refers to the ten-country political association comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, when used in the statistical tables, the term excludes Singapore. length of stay The length of stay shows the actual length of stay in Singapore. The date of arrival as indicated in the disembarkation/ embarkation card is matched against the date of departure to compute the actual length of s tay. As some visitors did not depart within the calendar year, the number of visitor departures would be less than the total visitor arrivals during the year. In computing the average length of stay, visitors staying beyond 60 days were treated as having stayed 60 days for comparability amongst the ASEAN countries. This is to ensure that the overall average length of stay is not affected by long-staying visitors. visitor days The number of visitor days for each market is the product of the respective visitor arrivals and average length of stay (using a 60-day cut-off point). “CIS” denotes The Commonwealth of Independent States, which consists of Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Georgia. "Scandinavia" comprises Denmark, Norway and Sweden. "n.e.c." denotes "not elsewhere classified". 30 Tourism Focus August 2005
EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR STATISTICS ON HOTEL AND F&B OUTLET Source of Data Statistics on the demand and supply of gazetted hotel rooms and cess collection are based on monthly statutory returns submitted to Singapore Tourism Board since April 1994 except for statistics on “rooms available” that published in the ‘Forecast on Gazetted Hotel Room Supply”. These figures are obtained from annual survey conducted by STB. Definitions maximum room-nights Room-nights calculated based on total hotel room inventory for all gazetted hotels. available room-nights Room-nights available for occupancy exclude rooms closed for renovations and staff use as declared in the statutory forms on a daily basis. gross lettings standard/ nominal average room rate Standard average room rate = Total room revenue divided by gross lettings Nominal average room rate = Total room revenue divided by paid lettings revenue per available room (revpar) = Standard Average Room Rate divided by 100 Multiple by Standard Average Occupancy Rate cess Cess is an imposition of tax on certain types of hotel and food and beverage establishments which have been gazetted under the Singapore Tourism (Cess Collection) Act Cap. 305C. The cess rate has undergone changes as follows: 3% prior to 1990, 4% from January 1990 to March 1991; 3% from April 1991 to March 1992 and 4% from April 1992 to March 1994. With effect from 1 April 1994, the cess rate has been reduced to 1% .
