ANNOUNCEMENT<br />

Starting from April 2004, fields such as (1) Purpose of Visit (2) Accommodation (3) Frequency<br />

of Trip and (4) Travel Arrangement have been removed from the Disembarkation/<br />

Embarkation card. However, data previously accorded by these missing fields are currently<br />

captured through a daily survey conducted at various departure checkpoints. As previously<br />

Disembarkation/Embarkation card was a self administered form as compared to a face-toface<br />

survey now, it is subjected to sampling error . Users are advised to exercise<br />

discretion when drawing any conclusions or inferences, or taking any action, based on the<br />

data.<br />

However, due to system update, such profile will only be published at the end of 2004.<br />

VISITOR ARRIVALS<br />

Continued growth in visitor arrivals: 9% over October 2002<br />

<strong>Singapore</strong> welcomed 696,113 visitors in October 2004; registering a 9% growth over the<br />

638,673 visitor arrivals in October 2002 (see charts 1 and 2 1 ).<br />

Visitor arrivals in October 2004 also represented a 19% increase over October 2003<br />

(586,391 visitors).<br />

<strong>Singapore</strong> welcomed 6.8 million visitors from January to October 2004.<br />

COUNTRY PERFORMANCE<br />

51% of visitors were from Indonesia, China, Australia, Japan and Malaysia<br />

In October 2004, Indonesia, China, Australia, Japan and Malaysia were <strong>Singapore</strong>’s top five<br />

visitor-generating markets. These markets accounted for over 50% of the total number of<br />

visitors for the month (see Chart 3a).<br />

Thailand registered a significant 52% growth over October 2002, with the Philippines<br />

(+40%), China (+22%), India (+19%), and Indonesia (+18%) also posting double-digit growth<br />

over October 2002.<br />

When compared with October 2003, Japan (+34%), Thailand (+31%) and the Philippines<br />

(+28%) were the top three markets with the highest year-on-year growth.<br />

Visitor arrivals from South Korea dropped 7% in October 2004 when compared with October<br />

2002 and increased by 11% when compared with October 2003.<br />

The strong growth for Thailand was partly due to the increased travel demand during Thailand’s<br />

October school holiday, with more tour packages made more affordable by low air<br />

fares offered by low cost carriers. The STB also continued its intensive promotion of<br />

Uniquely <strong>Singapore</strong> brand and the 'Uniquely <strong>Singapore</strong> Fun Breaks' campaign in Bangkok.<br />

On-going major consumer marketing and promotion helped boost arrivals from the Philippines.<br />

One of the STB’s initiatives was a raffle for Filipinos departing for <strong>Singapore</strong> in September<br />

and October 2004.<br />

The growth in visitor arrivals from China could be attributed to the continued publicity generated<br />

by the STB’s media campaign targeted at highly mobile individuals and families.<br />

The STB’s sustained engagement of incentive houses attracted incentive groups from India<br />

which bolstered visitor arrivals in October 2004. <strong>Singapore</strong> also took centrestage in India<br />

when <strong>Singapore</strong> Airlines launched its inaugural flight to Amritsar with publicity on TV and<br />

leading Indian newspapers.<br />

The STB’s aggressive promotions in Indonesia such as its ‘Colour Your Weekends’, ‘Party All<br />

The Time’ and ‘Uniquely <strong>Singapore</strong> Fun Breaks’ helped spur visitor arrival growth in October.<br />

Visitor arrivals were further boosted by the STB’s programmes targeted at families and<br />

highly mobile individuals offering travel packages that rode on the cheaper air fares available<br />

during the low travel season.<br />

The 7% drop in visitor arrivals from South Korea in October 2004 over October 2002 could<br />

be due to the lull in outbound travel following the end of the Chusok holidays in September<br />

2004.<br />

HOTEL INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE<br />

AOR registered a 6 percentage point improvement over October 2002<br />

The ARR and AOR for October 2004 were S$121 and 82% respectively. AOR registered a 6<br />

percentage point improvement over October 2002.<br />

Hotel room revenue in October 2004 reached S$85 million, representing a 3% growth<br />

when compared to the same period in 2003. However, a marginal 1% decline in room<br />

revenue was recorded when compared to October 2002.<br />

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR STATISTICS ON VISITOR ARRIVALS<br />

Source of Data<br />

Visitors arriving in <strong>Singapore</strong> are required to<br />

complete prescribed disembarkation/<br />

embarkation cards which serve as the source<br />

of statistics on visitor arrivals and departures.<br />

The accuracy of figures pertaining to the<br />

characteristics of visitors therefore depends<br />

on how accurately visitors complete these<br />

cards.<br />

Definitions<br />

visitor arrivals<br />

All visitors are classified by country of residence<br />

unless otherwise stated. Total visitor<br />

arrivals include all visitors coming by air and<br />

sea and non-Malaysian citizens coming by<br />

land.<br />

The term "ASEAN" stands for "Association of<br />

South East Asian Nations" and refers to the<br />

ten-country political association comprising<br />

Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines,<br />

Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, <strong>Singapore</strong>, Thailand,<br />

and Vietnam. However, when used in the<br />

statistical tables, the term excludes <strong>Singapore</strong>.<br />

length of stay<br />

The length of stay shows the actual length of<br />

stay in <strong>Singapore</strong>. The date of arrival as<br />

indicated in the disembarkation/<br />

embarkation card is matched against the<br />

date of departure to compute the actual<br />

length of s tay. As some visitors did not<br />

depart within the calendar year, the number<br />

of visitor departures would be less than the<br />

total visitor arrivals during the year.<br />

In computing the average length of stay,<br />

visitors staying beyond 60 days were treated<br />

as having stayed 60 days for comparability<br />

amongst the ASEAN countries. This is to<br />

ensure that the overall average length of<br />

stay is not affected by long-staying visitors.<br />

The number of visitor days for each market<br />

is the product of the respective visitor<br />

arrivals and average length of stay (using a<br />

60-day cut-off point).<br />

“CIS” denotes The Commonwealth of Independent<br />

States, which consists of Azerbaijan,<br />

Ukraine, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan,<br />

Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,<br />

Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan<br />

and Georgia.<br />

"Scandinavia" comprises Denmark, Norway<br />

and Sweden.<br />

"n.e.c." denotes "not elsewhere classified".<br />

"In transit" visitors stay less than one day.<br />

Visitors staying one day are necessarily<br />

overnight visitors.<br />

“rooms available” that published in the<br />

Cess is an imposition of tax on certain types<br />

of hotel and food and beverage<br />

establishments which have been gazetted<br />

under the <strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> (Cess<br />

Collection) Act Cap. 305C. The cess rate has<br />

undergone changes as follows: 3% prior to<br />

1990, 4% from January 1990 to March 1991;<br />

3% from April 1991 to March 1992 and 4%<br />

from April 1992 to March 1994. With effect<br />

from 1 April 1994, the cess rate has been<br />

reduced to 1% .<br />
