In 2005, Americas (+11%), Africa (+11%), Oceania
(+10%), Asia (+7%), and Europe (+5%), all
recorded increases in arrivals over 2004. Within
growth.
The top five major visitor generating markets in
2005 were Indonesia, China, Australia, Japan, and
India, accounting for 50% of total visitor
arrivals. While India (+24%) and Australia (+11%)
registered double-digit growth over 2004, China
(-3%) and Japan (-2%) both generated fewer
arrivals to Singapore.
In 2005, the average length of stay increased by
Tourism receipts 2 (TR) generated by visitors
grew by 11% over 2004. This is driven by
growth in total expenditure of visitors (TEV),
which increased by 14% over 2004.
All the major revenue markets registered
positive growth in tourism receipts compared to
2004. 8 out of 13 top TEV generating markets
registered double-digit growth in TEV.
In terms of TEV, India rebounded back to
position as the second top revenue generating
market, posting the highest growth of 34% in
2005. This was driven mainly by the strong
growth in visitor arrivals (+24%).
Due to the slight decline in visitor arrivals (-3%),
China slipped to become the third largest TEV
generating market in 2005.
Although arrivals from South Korea remained
about the same as 2004, the strong growth in
average length of stay (+12%) and per diem
expenditure (+32%) boosted TEV for South Korea
to register a high growth of 32%.
50% of them using this medium before coming
to Singapore.
ANNUAL REPORT ON TOURISM STATISTICS 2005
EXPLANATORY NOTES
A>. VISITOR PROFILE STATISTICS (DISEMBARKATION/EMBARKATION CARDS)
1. Source of Statistics
Visitors arriving in Singapore are required to complete the Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E)
cards, which serve as the source of statistics on visitor arrivals. The accuracy of figures pertaining
to the characteristics of visitors is subject to the accuracy in which the D/E cards are filled up.
Starting from April 2004, fields such as (1) Purpose of Visit (2) Accommodation (3) Frequency of
Trip and (4) Travel Arrangement have been removed from the Disembarkation/Embarkation
card.
2. Visitor Arrivals
All visitors are classified by country of residence unless otherwise stated. Total visitor arrivals
include all visitors arriving by air and sea and non-Malaysian citizens arriving by land.
3. Geographical Classification
The term "ASEAN" stands for "Association of South East Asian Nations" and refers to the tencountry
political association comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, when used in the statistical
tables, the term excludes Singapore.
‘CIS’ denoted The Commonwealth of Independent States, which consists of Russian Federation,
Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Georgia.
‘Scandinavia’ comprises Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
4. Length of Stay
Data on length of stay in this report reflect the actual length of stay in Singapore. The date of
each arrival for every visitor is matched against the date of departure to compute the actual
length of stay. As some visitors may not depart within the calendar year, the number of visitor
departures would be less than the total visitor arrivals for the year.
5. Visitor Days
The number of visitor days for each market is the product of the respective visitor arrivals
and average length of stay.
B. VISITOR PROFILE STATISTICS (OVERSEAS VISITORS SURVEY) AND TOURISM RECEIPTS
1. Methodology
Data on visitors’ travel pattern and tourism receipts are obtained mainly from the Overseas
Visitors Survey, as well as data from other sources 1 . The annual survey covers a sample of about
20,000 visitors departing Singapore mainly via the Changi International Airport. Face-to-face
interviews are conducted with visitors at the departure lounges throughout the year.
The sample is selected based on a quarterly quota, which is set according to the actual visitor
arrival statistics from the same quarter of the previous year. In addition, the data collected are
weighted by country of residence, age group and length of stay, based on actual visitor arrival
statistics compiled from the D/E cards. This ensures that the profile of visitors’ surveyed
resembled the distribution of visitor arrivals in the total population.
2. Definitions
Tourism receipts comprise mainly Total Expenditure of Visitors (TEV), and include expenditure
from transit passengers, foreign air/sea crew and foreign students.
TEV refers to any expenditure incurred by visitors during their stay in Singapore as well as the
amount they prepaid on components such as accommodation and sightseeing tours before
arrival.
Per capita expenditure refers to per person expenditure or per trip expenditure.
Per diem expenditure refers to per person per day expenditure for the trip.
C> HOTEL AND CESS COLLECTION STATISTICS
1. Definitions
CESS is an imposition of tax on certain types of hotel and food and beverage establishments
which have been gazetted under the Singapore Tourism (Cess Collection) Act Cap. 305C. The
cess rate has undergone changes as follows: 3% prior to 1990, 4% from January 1990 to March
1991; 3% from April 1991 to March 1992 and 4% from April 1992 to March 1994. With effect
from 1 April 1994, the cess rate has been reduced to 1% .
Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) = Gross lettings (room-nights) divided by available room nights.
