Do not hold on to 

me, because I have 

not yet ascended to 

the Father. But go to My 

brothers and say to them, ‘I 

am ascending to My Father 

and your Father, to My God 

and your God’. (John 20:17) 

We cling to Jesus because we 

want to keep Him with us 

always. Anyone who has lost 

someone beloved knows the 

experience of which I speak 

and understands, deeply, the 

 

heart on seeing The Risen Lord 

 

Perhaps it was your 

wife or husband, a son or a 

daughter, a unique friend, 

an incomparable teacher or 

preacher or a close colleague 

who rallied for a hour or a 

day, defying all reason and 

giving birth to a hope against 

all hope. This is a wonderful 

grace, but it comes with a high 

price. It is like the stillness 

of the wind and calmness of 

the waters before the great 

storm breaks over you. They 

leave you their bodies but 

they withdraw that essential 

part that communicates love, 

affection and reassurance surance 

into a tiny, remote knot of 

consciousness, inaccessible. sible. 

It’s all right to let them go, 

encourage your companions 

at the bedside or by the tomb. 

But you cling all the more 

It’s all 

right, you know, to suffer 

like this. Suffering seals the 

memory against loss and 

decay. The moment of Our 

 

birth to The Church and to Her 

sacred memory that unfolds 

for us and in us at Easter. 

We celebrate those days 

and weeks of The Lord 

because of memories that we 

want to keep alive and because 

 

we are and who e want to be 

and become. We surrender 

ourselves to the discipline of 

Lent and the trails of the Via 

Dolorosa in order to renew 

and revitalize our relationship 

with Jesus Christ and those 

nearest to our hearts whom we 

have lost here on Resurrection 

Day. 

How blessed are the 

memories that we have of those 

whom we have loved and lost 

to the often incomprehensible 

destiny of which we all will 

partake. The Easter Lilies

remain to adorn the church 

with their memories, but they 

are gone. And many here have 

broken hearts, broken more 

deeply than anything that had 

befallen them before or since. 

Perhaps merciful numbness 

has lent its service to helping 

the mourner to bear the 

unbearable. Memory, too, 

attends the bereft and, like the 

angels attesting to the empty 

tomb, stands at hand forever. 

Mary must let her Master 

go and bear witness to Him 

by keeping His memory alive. 

Memory can be bittersweet, 

and tears oftentimes 

accompany even the brightest 

recollections of that One who 

is beyond our sight. But in 

time, say two thousand years, 

memories can become more 

sweet than painful. And in 

moments clouded even by 

unbidden tears, we are moved 

to give thanks to have been 

privileged to know and to 

love—even for a fraction of our 

time upon this good earth— 

that One Who has gone before 

us into Eternity to meet God: I 

am ascending to My Father 

and your Father, to My God 

and your God. Take courage, 

my beloved, who have come to 

celebrate the victory of life on 

Easter Morning. And to those 

among us who have felt and 

endured such a loss in their 

own lives, I give you these 

words by William F. Floyd, 

words that real faith and love 

can proclaim: 

My times are in Thy hand; 

My God, I wish them there; 

My life, my friends, my soul I 

leave Entirely to Thy care. 

My times are in Thy 

hand; Whatever they may be; 

Pleasing or painful, dark or 

bright, 

As best may seem to Thee. 

My times are in Thy hand; 

Why should I doubt or fear? 

My Father’s hand will never 

cause His child a needless tear. 

My times are in Thy hand, 

 

Those hands my cruel sins had 

pierced 

Are now my guard and guide. 

My times are in Thy

I’ll always trust in

The LORD God said unto 

David His servant: With 

all your heart you wanted 

to build a temple for my Name. 

It is good that you wanted to do 

that. (1 Kg 8:18) The late Rev. 

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was 

 

 

Dreams in which he says: Each 

of you …in some way is working 

towards some kind of temple. 

The struggle is always there. Its 

gets discouraging some times… 

well, that is the story of life. And 

the thing that makes me happy 

is that I can hear a voice crying 

through the vista of time, saying: 

It may not come today or 

it may not come tomorrow, but 

it is well that it is within thine 

heart…Thank God that we have 

hearts to put something meaningful 

into. 

Our St. Peregrine Garden is 

such a temple. It is a temple of 

honor and of memory to those 

who carry the burden of cancer 

as victims and survivors, and to 

those who helped them bear the 

 

alas will walk in this life. It can 

be a lonely path with only Jesus 

to walk beside you through the 

lonesome valley. It too often is 

the last walk we will take because 

it leads to that 

ultimate rendezvous between 

rection. 

It can be a miraculous 

journey where you meet Jesus 

Christ the Healer along the way, 

as it was for St. Peregrine the 

Cancer-Saint. It is always in 

our hearts that with the help of 

 

prayers joined to those of The 

Saint the hard path will lead to 

that greatest news—cancer free! 

As temples ourselves we carry 

the Names and the inspirations 

of our loved ones who lived 

heroically with cancer. It fell to 

us spouses, children, friends or 

kind caregivers to accompany 

them, to love them, to minister 

to their bodies and to be witnesses 

to their nobility. Their 

Names are written in our hearts, 

but we, like them, must one 

day lay down our mortality for 

immortality. We must not lay 

down their Names with us. 

For the sake of their Names 

and their lives we have it in our 

hearts to build this temple of 

St. Peregrine. We want them to 

be remembered, their Names 

sung long after all of us have 

gone and a place to mark their 

passing along the road of life. 

The Bible tells us: Have regard 

to thy name; for that shall continue 

with thee above a thousand 

great treasures of gold. A 

good life hath but few days: but 

a good name endureth for ever. 

(Sirach 41:12-13) This Memorial 

Path marks the struggle and 

the Memorial Wall perpetuates 

the Names from one generation 

to the next at 

St. Thomas More Church. 

It is the nature of life that much 

will be left undone when The 

LORD calls us from this world to 

Himself. This Memorial should 

not be one of them. Endow a 

brick in the path or a plaque on 

the wall to proclaim your love 

and their Good Name. With the 

memorial they will be remembered 

and prayed for forever in 

St. Thomas More.
