The third component in a welded joint is the base metal. Most of the common
carbon and low-alloy steels used for tanks and pressure vessels are weldable.
The primary factor affecting the weldability of a base metal is its chemical
composition. Each type of metal has welding procedural limits within which
sound welds with satisfactory properties can be made.

If these limits are wide, the metal is said to have good weldability.
Conversely,
if the limits are narrow, the metal is said to have poor weldability.
