11.2.3 Other Considerations To avoid overheating and burn through, the welding procedure specification should be based on experience in performing welding operations on similar piping or equipment, and/or be based on heat transfer analysis. Many users establish procedures detailing the minimum wall thickness that can be hot tapped or welded in-service for a given set of conditions like; ■ ■ ■ pressure, temperature, and flow rate. To minimize burn through, the first weld pass to equipment or piping less than 1/4 in. (6.35 mm) thick should be made with 3/32 in. (4.76 mm) or smaller diameter welding electrode to limit heat input. For equipment and piping wall thicknesses where burn through is not a primary concern, a larger diameter electrode can be used. Weaving the bead should also be avoided as this increases the heat input.
