There are some elements present in carbon and alloy steels that are not<br />

deliberately added that can have an affect on weldability. These include<br />

(1) sulfur, (2) phosphorus, (3) tin, (4) antimony and (5) arsenic.<br />

These elements will sometimes be referred to as tramp elements. One tool<br />

has been developed to help evaluate the weldability of carbon and alloy steel<br />

and that is the carbon equivalent (CE) equation. The CE calculates a<br />

theoretical carbon content of the metal and takes into account not only carbon,<br />

but also the effect of purposely added alloying elements and tramp elements.<br />

Several different equations for expressing carbon equivalent are in use. One<br />

common equation is:
