One Brinell test consists of applying load (force), on a 10 mm diameter
hardened steel or tungsten carbide ball to a flat surface of a test specimen by
striking the anvil on the Brinell device with a hammer. The impact is
transmitted equally to a test bar that is held within the device that has a
known Brinell hardness value and through the impression ball to the test
specimen surface. The result is an indentation diameter in the test bar and
the test specimen surface. The diameters of the resulting impressions are
compared and are directly related to the respective hardness’s of the
test bar and the test specimen.
