4.6 Conventional Safety-relief Valve 4.6.1 General A conventional safety-relief valve is a direct spring-loaded pressure-relief valve whose operational characteristics (opening pressure, closing pressure, and relieving capacity) are directly affected by changes in the backpressure (see Figure 4). A conventional safetyrelief valve has a bonnet that encloses the spring and forms a pressure-tight cavity. The bonnet cavity is vented to the discharge side of the valve. 4.6.2 Applications Conventional safety-relief valves can be used in refinery and petrochemical processes that handle flammable, hot, or toxic material. The effect of temperature and backpressure on the set pressure is considered when specifying conventional safety-relief valves. Fion Zhnag/ Charlie Chong
