9: Non-destructive Examination

Table 4 lists the various weld joint types and common NDE methods available
to inspect their configuration. Table 5 further lists the detection capabilities of
the most common NDE methods. Additional methods, like alternating current
field measurement (ACFM), have applications in weld inspection and are
described in this section but are less commonly used. The inspector should
be aware of discontinuities common to specific base metals and weld
processes to assure these discontinuities are detectable. Table 6 is a
summary of these discontinuities, potential NDE methods and possible
solutions to the weld process.
