Fawn Arrives in Time
To Bow With 'Yearling'
Oklahoma City \ fawn born at the
Lincoln Park zoo has been named Midwest
after the Warner Bros, theatre. Its godfather
is Jimmy Barnes, Midwest manager,
who practically lived at the zoo
waiting for the mother to bring forth the
fawn.
When Barnes dated "The Yearling,"
he sought everywhere for a fawn to use
in exploitation, but nowhere could he
find one. He wanted it especially for the
screening he put on for patients in the
Crippled Children's hospital. Unable to
get one, he asked Uncle Leo Blondin,
keeper of the zoo, to tell the children a
stor>' about a fawn, using a small poster
for illustration.
Blondin promised to give Barnes a fawn
if the expected arrival showed up in time
for the opening of "The Yearling" four
days later. Barnes was a daily caller at
the zoo waiting for the birth, and finally
it came, just in time. The animal, Midwest,
made her public bow at a second
special screening Barnes put on at the
theatre for orphans and underprivileged
children.
