Mew Year's eve kids matinees were put on
at the St. Cloud Amusement Corp.'s Oriental,
Tower and Zenith, with free noisemakers.
In addition to the regular program, ten cartoons
were shown, with community singing in
the afternoon . Woodward of Delft &
Affiliated Theatres, who was confined to his
home for weeks last summer with a broken
leg and later had to go back to the hospital
due to a blood clot which developed while the
leg healed, is back on the job without the
cast. He still has to go easy on the leg, he
says.

party at the Medford hotel . . . Warner employes
went to Chicago to hold their party
with the Chicago staft ... At four Warner
houses here, the Egyptian, Milwaukee, Granada
and Juneau theatres, a special matinee
was given for kids, featuring 25 cartoons at
25 cents admission ... At the Fox Downer
on the upper east side, "A Place in the Sun"
was on the screen.
Lou Gamble, brother of Ted of Standard
Theatres, visited his brother and others in
show business . . . Charles Perry, former
manager of the Strand when Saxe operated
it, is reported to have been elected chief
barker of the Detroit Variety Club, his second
election to that position. His first term
ended ten years ago. Perry is manager of
the Adams and Downtown theatres in Detroit.
Don Schwartz of Realart is reported to
have booked his combination bill of "If I
Had Mv Way" and "East Side of Heaven" at
Fox's Madison, Madison, for a week . . .
Filmrow
hears that Harold Calloway has opened
the La Farge Theatre at La Farge, after remodeling.
Charles Trampe, after a siege at Mayo
clinic, Rochester, returned home and is convalescing.
He is at his office at Monogram
an hour or two every day . . . Visitors at Variety
Club were Irving Werthwein of Paramount,
Chicago: Gill Nathanson, Minneapolis;
Joe Bereson and friend Becker of
Chicago, and Elmer Brennan of Green Bay,
Standard Theatres supervisor there.
Oscar Olsen, business executive for the projectionists
imion, held a cocktail party at
union headquarters here and

offices for all employes, associates and friends.
William Aschman of the DeVry Corp., Chicago,
former branch manager for Pathe here
and in Chicago, spent a week with friends
along Filmrow. Bill is one of the pioneer
filmmen in the midwest . Sharun of
Theatre Pi-emiums, Detroit, visited friends
here dm-ing his holiday vacation . . . Directors
of Variety Tent 14 held a meeting December
28 and appointed committees for the
coming year.
Proposed Jingle Contest
Held Void in Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE—A jingle contest for increasing
theatre attendance has been turned down
by the state attorney general as an illegal
lottery. The fii'st lines of the proposed jingle
read: "One, two three, four: Drink milk,
drink more: Five, six, seven, eight," with a
blank line to be filled in by the contestant.
Attorney General Thomas E. Fairchild would
not say what Milwaukee theatres has asked
for permission to operate such a contest, but
he said he had told the applicants that the
manner of conducting the proposed contest
would constitute a lottery, and he could not
approve it.
Fairchild said he had been told the contest
would not be conducted in the theatres but
would consist of filling in the last line of
the jingle in the lobbies, with no paid admissions
necessary, and the judges would make
awards on the basis of neatness and originality.
Prizes would be awarded at children's
matinees on Saturdays, but the contestants
would not have to be in the theatre.
The attorney general said he did not think
the contest was a test of skill, as no definite
i-ules had been set up for judging.
