DID JESUS EAT THE PASSOVER ON HOLY THURSDAY?<br />

Dear Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r:<br />

A few days ago, Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Johannes and my weakness were visiting some people, when a discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

arose about whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r-in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last supper- Jesus used leavened bread (as we say,) or unleavened bread<br />

(as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Catholics say.) Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Johannes asked me to write down what was said and send it to our fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> priests by Fax. I am sending this al<strong>on</strong>g out of obedience to Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Johannes.<br />

The argument arises from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Catholics’ c<strong>on</strong>tenti<strong>on</strong> that Covenant Thursday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Preparati<strong>on</strong> day<br />

and that Good Friday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover day. The Orthodox, based <strong>on</strong> sound interpretati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Scriptures, believe that Good Friday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Preparati<strong>on</strong> day and that Saturday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover day.<br />

The Preparati<strong>on</strong> day, i.e. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day before Passover, was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day in which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> jews c<strong>on</strong>sumed all<br />

leavened bread and burned <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> left overs, so that, come 6 p.m., when Passover starts, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re would be no<br />

leavened bread in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house. It was also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day <strong>on</strong> which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover lamb is slain and roasted so that<br />

it would be <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g>en in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evening, i.e. when Passover starts (at 6:01 p.m.)<br />

According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Catholics, since Covenant Thursday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Preparati<strong>on</strong> day, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last<br />

Supper which took place <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evening i.e. at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> start of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re would be no leavened<br />

bread in any Jewish house. The Last Supper would thus be a Passover meal, followed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Instituti<strong>on</strong><br />

of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sacrament of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eucharist.<br />

The Orthodox teach that Good Friday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Preparati<strong>on</strong> day, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover started <strong>on</strong> 6:01 p.m.<br />

<strong>on</strong> Good Friday, that Christ died <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cross at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same hour <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jews slew <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir Passover lamb, and<br />

thus Christ became our Passover. (ICO 5:7) Because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover coincided with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sabbath day<br />

(Saturday,) it was called a “High Sabbath.” It follows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last supper was an ordinary meal,<br />

where ordinary leavened bread was c<strong>on</strong>sumed, and not a Passover meal when <strong>on</strong>ly unleavened bread<br />

would be used. Here are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proofs:<br />

“When Pilate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judgment s<str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

... and it was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover ... <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n delivered he Him <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore unto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to be<br />

crucified.” (John 19:13-16)<br />

“The Jews <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore, because it was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong>, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bodies should not remain up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

cross <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir legs might be<br />

broken, and that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y might be taken away.” (John 19:31)<br />

“There laid <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y Jesus <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore because of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jews’ Preparati<strong>on</strong> day for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sepulchre was nigh at<br />

hand.” (John 19:42)<br />

“And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>on</strong>e,<br />

wherein never man before was laid. And that day was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sabbath drew <strong>on</strong>.”<br />

(Luke 23: 53-54)<br />

It is obvious that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trial of Jesus before Pilate, His crucifixi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breaking of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> legs of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

two thieves, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> burial of Jesus happened <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong> day. Proof that Good Friday<br />

was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong> day.<br />

“Now <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next day, that followed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chief priests and Pharisees came<br />

toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three<br />

days I will rise again. Command <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sepulchre be made sure until <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> third day, lest his<br />

disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people, He is risen from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dead: so <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

last error shall be worse than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first.” (Mat 27:62-64)<br />

The chief priests and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pharisees went to Pilate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next day, after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> burial, which is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

day after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong>, ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r proof that Good Friday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day of preparati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

“Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was c<strong>on</strong>demned, repented himself, and<br />

brought again <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> thirty pieces of silver to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have<br />

betrayed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> innocent blood. And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pieces of silver in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chief priests took <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> treasury, because it is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> price of blood.

And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y took counsel, and bought with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potter's field, to bury strangers in.” (Mat 27:3-7)<br />

“And <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y compel <strong>on</strong>e Sim<strong>on</strong> a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country (literally,<br />

coming back from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.” (Mark 15:21)<br />

“And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> linen, and laid him in a<br />

sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a st<strong>on</strong>e unto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> door of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sepulchre.” (Mark 15:46)<br />

If Good Friday was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover day, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chief priests could not have bought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potters field,<br />

nor could Joseph of Arima<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>a buy linen, nor would Sim<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cyrenian be working in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field,<br />

for it was unlawful to buy, sell or work during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover.<br />

Now before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> feast of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>passover</str<strong>on</strong>g>, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart<br />

out of this world unto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, having loved his own which were in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world, he loved <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m unto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

end. And supper being ended, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> devil having now put into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heart of Judas Iscariot, Sim<strong>on</strong>'s s<strong>on</strong>, to<br />

betray him; Jesus knowing that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from<br />

God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded<br />

himself. After that he poureth water into a bas<strong>on</strong>, and began to wash <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> disciples' feet, and to wipe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m<br />

with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> towel wherewith he was girded.<br />

The Last supper and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> washing of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> feet of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> disciples <strong>on</strong> Covenant Thursday happened<br />

BEFORE THE FEAST OF THE PASSOVER. So, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last Supper could not have been <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover<br />

meal.<br />

“And after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.<br />

Now no man at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. For some of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m thought, because<br />

Judas had <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

feast.”(John 13:27-29)<br />

If <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last Supper was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover meal, why would <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> disciples think that Jesus was telling<br />

Judas to buy <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> things needed for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> feast?<br />

“Then led <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y Jesus from Caiaphas unto <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hall of judgment: and it was early; and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves<br />

went not into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judgment hall, lest <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y should be defiled; but that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y might <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover.” (John<br />

18:28)<br />

On Good Friday, when Jesus was taken to Pilate. The Jews had not yet <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g>en <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Passover,<br />

so, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last Supper of Covenant Thursday could not have been a Passover meal.<br />

“Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

purtenance <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>reof. And thus shall ye <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g> it; with your loins girded, your shoes <strong>on</strong> your feet, and your<br />

staff in your hand; and ye shall <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g> it in haste: it is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lord's <str<strong>on</strong>g>passover</str<strong>on</strong>g>.” (Exo 12:9-11)<br />

The Passover meal had to be <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g>en in haste while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y stood, during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last Supper Jesus<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> disciples were reclining. Also it was not lawful to kook it in water, but to <str<strong>on</strong>g>eat</str<strong>on</strong>g> it roasted,<br />

while in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Last supper Jesus dipped <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bread in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plate, implying a meal cooked with water,<br />

which was forbidden.<br />
