Louisiana Bayou
By Laura Hanks
I have been a member of the St. Louis Park Senior
Program at Lenox Community Center for many years.
We have moved to a condo in Minnetonka but because
we lived in St. Louis Park for 42 years we still consider
it home. We spend winters in Florida but I get back
in time each spring to take the painting classes. I also
take part in the exercise and craft programs and enjoy
the fellowship at Lenox very much.
The Lenox Foundation News
Summer – June, July and August 2007
This spring and summer the Lenox Foundation Board
is focusing on the process of clarifying our vision. With
the help of Julie Dappen from MAP for nonprofit, the
Board is setting up goals for the coming year concentrating
on expanding the marketing side of the
Foundation. This may include targeting new audiences,
expanding marketing and looking at new giving
opportunities. It is very exciting...
The Lenox Board wants to thank each of you who gave
so generously this past year. The Board met its goal of
$10,000 to be sent to the Minnesota Community Foundation
who manages our funds. It in turn gave back
$10,127 in interest that went directly into the St. Louis
Park Senior Program budget. Our returned interest
from the Minnesota Community Foundation is increased
with each deposit.
It has been an exciting year for the Lenox Foundation
– each year better than the last. We rely on your support
to continue to help make the St Louis Park Senior
Program one of the best in the state.
the brain has a remarkable
capacity to change and
grow at any age.
Individuals have the
ability to manage how
go by. To heighten our awareness, we will do aerobics of
the senses sight, sound and smell. We will explore both
theory and practice through activities.
Emergency Information
Paramedics will turn to a victim’s cell phone for clues to
that person’s identity. You can make their job much easier
with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to
adopt ICE. ICE stands for IN CASE of EMERGENCY. If
you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under
ICE, with the name and phone number of the person
that the emergency services should call on your behalf,
you can save them a lot of time and have our loved ones
contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your
time to do. Paramedics know what ICE means and they
look for it immediately. Use ICE1, ICE2, etc. for more than
one contact.
Long Term Care
By Senior Community Volunteer Staff
Long term care is a variety of services and support to meet
health or personal care needs over an extended period of
time. Most long term care is non-skilled personal care
assistance, such as help performing everyday Activities of
Daily Living (ADL’s). Examples of these activities may
include help with bathing, dressing, eating, using the
toilet, or transferring from bed or chair. The goal of these
services is to help an individual maximize independence
and functioning at a time when one is unable to be fully
independent. Long term care services may be needed
when a sudden illness or injury creates a need for help
with the activities of daily living while an individual
recuperates at home.
This year about 9 million Americans over the age of 65
will need long term care services. By 2020 that number
will increase to 12 million. While most people who need
long term care are age 65 or older, a person can need these
services at any age. Service and support needs vary from
one person to the next and often change over time.
Plans are underway for St. Louis Park’s
third annual “Bookmark in the Park”
communitywide reading program. The
2007 theme is “Celebrating the Arts.”
This year’s book selection will be
announced at the Children First Ice
Cream Social on Sunday, May 20.
Bookmark’s purpose is to promote reading and community
unity by challenging everyone to read the same book at the
same time. “Make a good book better, read it together.”
Watch for the Bookmark presence at major community
events and announcements of special activities throughout
the year. Volunteers are needed for one-time events. To
