Our Philosophy:
We believe that parents are the primary educators of their children and
that the school provides the facility, the resources, and the personnel that
contributes to the child's ongoing education.
We believe the role of the teacher is to facilitate and enhance each child's
foundation of knowledge, instructing in a manner that recognizes
individual talents and learning styles.
We believe that the curriculum revolves around the religious dimension
of the school, focusing on instruction, prayer, service, and community.
We are a sacramental community united in the Eucharist.
We believe that the school's curriculum must enable each child to
develop his/her intellectual, physical, spiritual, moral, aesthetic,
emotional, and social skills.
We believe the role of the school is to develop skills that encourage our
students to become life-long learners, who make educated decisions
rooted in Catholic values, and who function as contributing members of
the community.
Dear Friends of SJSH School,
The Gospel from Mark tells us:
FROM THE PASTOR
“And people were bringing children to him that he
might touch them. Let the children come to me; do
not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs
to such as these”.
St. John – Sacred Heart School has a long and faith-filled
history of spreading the Good News to the children in our
community. Our parish school has touched and influenced
many lives in the way of faith, values and learning. We
continue to be fully committed to our school and continue to
work to keep our methods and technology current with a
changing world. Through these important educational efforts we celebrate our
strengths, identify areas for improvement and work together to ensure our school will
flourish for generations to come.
I call upon all parishioners of school-aged children to visit and consider St. John - Sacred
Heart School for your children. I invite you to join me in this spiritual and educational
adventure. Take a close look at what SJSH School has to offer and the well-rounded
young adults they help to nourish and mold. Research has proven that Catholic schools
provide a uniquely powerful education for the child’s spiritual, intellectual, physical, and
social growth. You may find that you want that for your children. Come and invest in
the future of our youth.
Thank you for your prayers, service and sharing that makes this ministry of the school a
source of deep family faith and pride for our faith community. May God continue to
bless our parish and school!
Grace and peace to you in Christ,
Dear Families and Friends,
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Another exciting and rewarding year concluded with graduation of 15 outstanding students from St.
John – Sacred Heart School. As you will note later in this report, 10 of these students were recognized
for earning the Presidential Excellence and Achievement Awards. All of the other five students in this
class were also honor roll students. It speaks volumes about their dedication and commitment. We
continue to be so proud of our students.
This past year, a technology committee developed plans and began a
three-phase program to upgrade the technology resources within our
school. Ceiling mounted projectors and white boards can be found in
most classrooms, with Elmo projectors and laptops in the other rooms.
Phase 2 involves the purchase of classroom sets of laptop computers
which will enhance our students’ use of technology. Phase 3 involves the
installation of smart board technology.
Staff have been trained to implement the new Common Core
curriculum in language arts and math and received training in
technology integration options throughout the curriculum.
But an equally impressive component is our religion curriculum. This,
after all, is why the school exists. While we can boast about our students’ academic achievements, the
religious aspect of the school is of prime significance. Consider that a child attending SJSH for nine
years will have approximately…
• Received 970 hours in religious instruction (including Scripture, morality, theology, Church
history, prayer and sacraments, saints, and liturgy)
• Participated in 324 liturgies
• Received the Sacrament of Reconciliation 30 times
• Participated in 6,480 prayers and prayer services
• Prayed the Stations of the Cross 54 times
• Participated or attended 18 religious performances (Christmas Program and Passion Play)
• Received 180 hours of training and instruction in religious music
• Prayed the rosary and attended Marian devotions 30 times
• Participated in 10 student retreats
• Shared in 40 service opportunities
• Received 45 hours of instruction on mission awareness
In addition, he/she will be exposed to the integration of religious topics and themes in most academic
disciplines. He/she will have been exposed to 11,340 hours of instruction in a religious environment.
This environment, including religious symbols, banners, boards, prayer corners, etc. is evident every hour
of every day spent in school.
Our school mission statement charges us to provide a quality academic education for life-long
learning, rooted in the Catholic tradition. All school families and school supporters can hold their
heads high with pride. A supportive parish community, dedicated parents and teachers, and eager
students together make SJSH School a “School of Distinction.”
teaching me a great work ethic. The grading system holds us to higher expectations and we have to work
Lessons learned while at SJSH School...
“I am thankful my parents sent me to SJSH School because it has helped me become the best I can be by developing
social skills, taking advanced classes, and nurturing my faith in everyday life. SJSH has helped me greatly in preparing
me for high school. I feel I have a very strong background in math, which allowed me to qualify for Honors Geometry.
In addition I was able to take a Biology class with sophomores/juniors and almost all of the topics that have been taught
are a review for me. SJSH has taught me many values that I feel I will carry throughout my life and has put me in a
position to succeed.” Caleb Braun, Class of 2012
“I am thankful for my education at SJSH School because of the things that I wouldn’t have learned in a public school,
like faith and Christian values. SJSH nurtured my faith by teaching me many different ways to pray and thank God. It
has helped me do different activities to build upon my faith, and teach me all of the ways that I can be a good Christian.
At SJSH, I learned many different values, like respect, responsibility, compassion, and productivity. Academically, SJSH
has a very good math program. We learned Algebra in 8th grade while most of my friends are learning it now. Now I am
in Geometry with sophomores, juniors, and seniors. SJSH School has a strong English program as I tested into
Advanced English 9. Only 30 other freshman are in the Advanced English classes.” Megan Brochtrup , Class of 2012
TECHNOLOGY CAMPAIGN
As a part of the SJSH School’s strategic plan, a Technology Committee was formed to review and evaluate
the technological needs in the classroom for the enhancement of teaching and instructional capabilities for
all students. This review was conducted to allow SJSH to stay competitive as an educational provider, as
well as planning for the three phase strategic objectives. A Technology Capital Campaign was created to
seek funding to make this vision a reality. As a result $14,618.88 was raised at Bids for Kids and other
donations made throughout the school year which allowed Phase 1 to be accomplished. Many thanks to the
following donors who supported the Technology Campaign.
