The Baptism of
the Lord
January 13, 2008
A voice came from the
heavens, saying,
“This is my beloved
Son, with whom I am
well pleased.”
— Matthew 3:17
Throughout the year 2008 I will be devoting most of
my columns to a presentation of the basics of our
Catholic faith taken from a little book called the
Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic
Church that was promulgated a couple of years ago
by Pope Benedict XVI. The Compendium is a brief,
but complete, presentation of the Catholic faith. Our
faith contains the saving truths about God and man
revealed to us in the Person of Jesus Christ and
taught infallibly by his one, holy, catholic and
apostolic Church. The Catholic faith not only
enlightens our minds with the beauty of truth, it also
shows us how to walk in the truth so that we may
attain eternal happiness with God.
We need to know our faith well: first, that we might
show proper gratitude to God who in his mercy and
love has revealed it to us, knowing that “it is in the
spirit that we eagerly await the justification we hope
for, and only faith can yield it” (Galatians 5:5);
second, “that we in turn might make known the glory
of God shining on the face of Christ” (2 Corinthians
4:6), for God “wants all men to be saved and come to
know the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4). Therefore, we learn
our faith not simply for our own private edification but
also that we might share our faith with others as
Jesus commands us, “the gift you have received,
give as a gift” (Matthew 10:8) and “your light must
shine before men so that they may see goodness in
your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father.”
(Matthew 5:16)
In his Motu proprio authorizing the publication of the
Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic
Church, Benedict XVI expresses the hope that
“everyone who reads this authoritative text [may]
recognize and embrace ever more fully the
inexhaustible beauty, uniqueness and significance of
the incomparable Gift which God has made to the
human race in His only Son, Jesus Christ, ‘the Way,
the Truth, and the Life.’” In the weeks and months
ahead, we will read and comment on it together that
this hope may be fulfilled in us.
The Compendium is presented to us, like the
Baltimore Catechism that many of our older
parishioners are familiar with, in question-and-answer
form. For our purposes in this column, I will
reproduce from the Compendium first the question it
poses, then the answer it gives, and then I will offer a
brief commentary. This week we will start small, by
looking just at the first question in the Compendium.
In future weeks, we will tackle two or three questions
at a time. Eventually, we will work through all the
questions and therefore will have gained a much
greater knowledge of our faith.
Question One: What is the plan of God for man?
Answer: God, infinitely perfect and blessed in
himself, in a plan of sheer goodness, freely
created man to make him share in his own
blessed life. In the fullness of time, God the
Father sent his Son as the Redeemer and Savior
of mankind, fallen into sin, thus calling all into his
Church and through the work of the Holy Spirit,
making them adopted children and heirs of his
eternal happiness.
COMMENTARY: Life needs a plan. A plan provides
direction, and direction provides meaning. Human
beings crave meaning for their lives because
meaning bestows value, and without value, life
becomes series of unconnected experiences, coming
from nowhere and leading nowhere.
The Compendium assures us that life does indeed
have a plan. It is a grand plan that includes
everybody and everything. Nothing we experience is
omitted from this plan, nothing is wasted, nothing is
without value. Where does the plan come from? It
comes from “the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of mercies and the God of all consolation.” (2

Page 3
Corinthians 1:3). Who reveals the plan? Jesus
himself, who said, “I am the way, and the truth, and
the life.” (John 14:6) What is the plan called? It is
called the Gospel, a word that means good news.
Jesus commanded his listeners, “Reform your lives
and believe in the gospel!” (Mark 1:15)
But why should God have a plan for man? Why
should God even care for man at all? For, God is
infinitely perfect and blessed in himself. He does not
need man for His perfection, nor does man add
anything to God’s greatness. And yet, out of sheer
goodness God made man for only one purpose: to
make him a participant in the eternal exchange of
love that constitutes the inner life of God Himself.
Jesus says, “As the Father has loved me, so I have
loved you. Live on in my love.” (John 15:9)
Jesus reveals God as a Trinity of Persons whose
very essence is love itself: the Father begets the Son
in love; the Son, “the exact representation of the
Father’s being” (Hebrews 1:3), perfectly returns the
Father’s love; and from them both proceeds the Spirit
of love who binds them together. In creating man,
God desires to share with him the selfsame love He
has for his Son by incorporating them as a body—
called his Church—into the life of his Son. He does
this through the work of the Holy Spirit, making them
adopted children and heirs of his eternal happiness.
But to enter into divine life, man must first be freed
from the power of sin, a reality that entered the world
because of man’s rejection of God. Man cannot free
himself from sin; he does not have the power. Only
God can free man from sin, and so, in the fullness of
time, that is to say, at the hour appointed by God in
his wisdom, the Father sent his Son as the
Redeemer and Savior of mankind. When one is
redeemed, he is freed from the slavery of sin to obey
once more the demands of love and so learn how to
love like the Son as an adopted child of God.
Have a great week!
Feast Day of the Week
The Baptism of Our Lord -
January 13
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the
Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the
season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's
second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on
the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus
descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to
give them the power to beget sons of God. The event
takes on the importance of a second creation in
which the entire Trinity intervenes.
In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany
because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan
God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John
was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the
Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of
repentance and induced them to confess their sins.
Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He
appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was
recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves", He was
absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred
upon the water the power of the true Baptism which
would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the
Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of
the world".
Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's
baptism are symbolical of what happened at our
Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit
descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took

Page 5
its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was
proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our
Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At
Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our
Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism
Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to
avoid actual sin.
A Prayer for the Feast Day
Almighty, eternal God, when the Spirit descended
upon Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan, you
revealed him as your own beloved Son. Keep us,
your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to
our calling. We ask this through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Activities for the Feast of the Baptism of Christ
This is a wonderful day to recall to mind and renew
our baptismal vows, and to celebrate the wonderful
gift God has given us. Invite your children's
godparents to drop in and take part in the day's
festivities.
Directions
Bring out the baptismal gowns if you have saved
them. Reminisce about each child's baptismal day,
which is his or her rebirth in Christ. With godparents
and family gathered in the living room, light the
children's baptismal candles, or light a holy candle for
each child. When the candles are ready, the father
presents one to each child and prays as the Church
did at baptism:
You have become a new creation, and have
clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white
garment the outward sign of your Christian
dignity. With your family and friends to help
you by word and example, bring that dignity
unstained into the everlasting life of heaven.
Receive this burning light. This light is
entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly.
Safeguard your baptism by a blameless life.
Keep the Commandments of God, that when
our Lord shall come to claim His own, you
may be worthy to greet Him, with all the saints
in the heavenly kingdom. Amen.
Grown-ups and children repeat together their
baptismal vows:
I _________, promise to reject Satan, and all
his works and empty promises.
Then recite the Apostles Creed, which repeats the
basic beliefs of our faith:
I believe in God the Father almighty. Creator
of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His
only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and
was buried. He descended into hell; the third
day He arose again from the dead. He
ascended into heaven, and is seated at the
right hand of God the Father almighty; from
thence He shall come to judge the living and
the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Holy
Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the
body; and life everlasting. Amen.
Then follows a Christmas song.
This ceremony takes only a few minutes, but leaves
a memory that lasts a lifetime and builds a sense of
security in children. It also focuses their attention on
the wonderful gift of Baptism.
Prayer Corner
Did you make a New Year’s resolution to be more
attentive to prayer? Many of us have, and very often
we find ourselves at a loss for words to say.
Certainly, the Lord knows the depths of our hearts,
and very often words are not even necessary. Below
is a prayer attributed to John Henry Cardinal
Newman, 1801-1890. Place it by your bedside as a
way to close the day and hush your busy world.
O Lord, support us all the day long,
until the shadows lengthen,

Page 6
and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then in your mercy,
grant us a safe lodging and a holy rest,
and peace at the last.
Amen.
