The Epiphany
of the Lord
January 6,
2008
They opened their
treasures
and offered him gifts
of gold,
frankincense, and
myrrh.
— Matthew 2:11b
I can think of no better way to comment on the
meaning of today’s liturgical celebration than to
borrow the words of Pope St. Leo the Great who
delivered the following homily on an Epiphany day
seventeen hundred years ago:
“The loving providence of God determined that in the
last days he would aid the world, set on its course of
destruction. He decreed that all nations should be
saved in Christ.
A promise had been made to the holy patriarch
Abraham in regard to these nations. He was to have
a countless progeny, born not from his body but from
the seed of faith. His descendants are therefore
compared with the array of the stars. The father of all
nations was to hope not in an earthly progeny but in
a progeny from above.
Let the full number of nations now take their place in
the family of the patriarchs. Let the children of the
promise now receive the blessing in the seed of
Abraham. In the persons of the Magi let all people
adore the Creator of the universe; let God be known,
not in Judea only, but in the whole world, so that his
name may be great in all Israel.
Dear friends, now that we have receive instruction in
this revelation of God’s grace, let us celebrate with
spiritual joy the day of our first harvesting, of the first
calling of the Gentiles. Let us give thanks to the
merciful God, who has made us worthy, in the words
of the Apostle, to share the position of the saints in
light; who has rescued us from the power of
darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of his
beloved Son.
As Isaiah prophesied, The people of the Gentiles,
who sat in darkness, have seen a great light, and for
those who dwelt in the region of the shadow of death
a light has dawned. He spoke of them to the Lord:
The Gentiles, who do not know you, will invoke you,
and the peoples, who knew you not, will take refuge
in you.
This is the day that Abraham saw, and rejoiced to
see, when he knew that the sons born of his faith
would be blessed in his seed, that is, in Christ.
Believing that he would be the father of the nations,
he looked into the future, giving glory to God in full
awareness that God is able to do what he has
promised.
This is the day that David prophesied in the psalms,
when he said: All the nations that you have brought
into being will come and fall down in adoration in your
presence, Lord, and glorify your name. Again, the
Lord has made know his salvation; in the sight of the
nations he has revealed his justice.
This came to be fulfilled, as we know, from the time
when the star beckoned the three wise men out of
their distant country and led them to recognize and
adore the King of heaven and earth. The obedience
of the star calls us to imitate its humble service: to be

Page 3
servants, as best we can, of the grace that invites all
men to find Christ.
Dear friends, you must have the same zeal to be of
help to one another; then, in the kingdom of God, to
which faith and good works are the way, you will
shine as children of the light: through our Lord Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with God the Father and
the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.”
Have a great week!
Support For Pregnant Women
In Need
There are more than 30 crisis pregnancy centers in
Maryland that support pregnant women in need.
These centers receive no support from the state,
even though they provide highly-specialized crisis
intervention counseling not available through any
existing public program. The Maryland General
Assembly will consider legislation during the 2008
session that would establish a program to help these
centers assist pregnant woman in need. Our parish
will hold a letter campaign after Masses on the
weekend of January 12 – 13, 2008 to urge
lawmakers to support this initiative. Please plan now
to participate. The process will be greatly facilitated if,
when you come, you already know the number of
your legislative district.
Saint of the Week
Raymond of Penafort
January 7
Born in Barcelona, Spain, St. Raymond of Penafort
was the third Superior-General of the Dominican
Order. He is famous for his work in the freeing of
slaves. He wrote five books of Decretals which are
now a valuable part of the Canon Law of the Church.
The Summa Casuum, which is about the correct and
fruitful administration of the Sacrament of Penance,
is the most notable of his works.
The blessed Raymond was born at Barcelona, of the
noble family of Penafort. Having been imbued with
the rudiments of the Christian faith, the admirable
gifts he had received, both of mind and body, were
such that even when quite a boy he seemed to
promise great things in his later life.
Whilst still young, he taught humanities in Barcelona.
Later on, he went to Bologna, where he applied
himself with much diligence to the exercises of a
virtuous life, and to the study of canon and civil law.
He there received the Doctor's cap, and interpreted
the sacred canons so ably that he was the admiration
of his hearers. The holiness of his life becoming
known far and wide, Berengarius, the Bishop of
Barcelona, when returning to his diocese from Rome,
visited Bologna in order to see him; and after most
earnest entreaties, induced Raymond to accompany
him to Barcelona. He was shortly after made Canon
and Provost of that Church, and became a model to

Page 5
the clergy and people by his uprightness, modesty,
learning and meekness. His tender devotion to the
Holy Mother of God was extraordinary, and he never
neglected an opportunity of zealously promoting the
devotion and honor which are due to her.
When he was about forty-five years of age, he made
his solemn profession in the Order of the Friars
Preachers. He then, as a soldier but just entered into
service, devoted himself to the exercise of every
virtue, but above all to charity to the poor, and this
mainly to the captives who had been taken by the
infidels. It was by his exhortation that St Peter
Nolasco (who was his penitent) was induced to
devote all his riches to this work of most meritorious
charity. The Blessed Virgin appeared to Peter, as
also to blessed Raymond and to James the First,
King of Aragon, telling them that it would be
exceedingly pleasing to herself and her divine Child,
if an Order of Religious men were instituted whose
mission it should be to deliver captives from the
tyranny of infidels. Whereupon, after deliberating
together, they founded the Order of our Lady of
Mercy for the Ransom of Captives; and blessed
Raymond drew up certain rules of life, which were
admirably adapted to the spirit and vocation of the
said Order. Some years after, he obtained their
approbation from Gregory the Ninth, and made St
Peter Nolasco, to whom he gave the habit with his
own hands, first General of the Order.
Raymond was called to Rome by the same Pope,
who appointed him to be his Chaplain, Penitentiary,
and Confessor. It was by Gregory's order that he
collected together, in the volume called the
Decretals, the Decrees of the Roman Pontiffs, which
were to be found separately in the various Councils
and Letters. He was most resolute in refusing the
Archbishopric of Tarragona, which the same Pontiff
offered to him, and, of his own accord resigned the
Generalship of the Dominican Order, which office he
had discharged in a most holy manner for the space
of two years. He persuaded James the King of
Aragon to establish in his dominions the Holy Office
of the Inquisition. He worked many miracles; among
which is that most celebrated one of his having, when
returning to Barcelona from the island of Majorca,
spread his cloak upon the sea, and sailed upon it, in
the space of six hours, the distance of a hundred and
sixty miles, and having reached his convent, entered
it through the closed doors. At length, when he had
almost reached the hundredth year of his age, and
was full of virtue and merit, he slept in the Lord, in the
year of the Incarnation 1275. He was canonized by
Pope Clement the Eighth.
St. Raymond contributed much to the understanding
of the Sacrament of Penance. Make sure your family
knows the Act of Contrition and says it every day.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for
having offended you, and I detest
all my sins, because of Your just
punishments, but most of all because
they offend You, my God, who are
all-good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of
Your grace, to sin no more and to
avoid the near occasion of sin.
Papal Intentions
For each month of the year, the Holy Father, Pope
Benedict, XVI, asks the faithful to lift up prayers for
very specific issues. These are called the Papal
Intentions of the month. There is a general intention
and an intention focusing on mission for each month.
For January, the Holy Father has asked us to pray:
That the Church may strengthen her commitment to
full visible unity in order to manifest ever more clearly
her nature as a community of love in which is
reflected the communion of the Father, the Son and
the Holy Spirit.
- and -
That the Church in Africa, preparing to celebrate the
second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for
Africa, may continue to be a sign and channel of
reconciliation and justice in a continent still suffering
from war, exploitation and poverty.

Page 6
Today is the Feast of the
Epiphany!
Twelve days after Christmas we celebrate the great
feast of Epiphany, or Little Christmas, as it is
sometimes called, in honor of the visit of the three
kings who brought gifts to the Christ Child in the
manger.
Twelfth-night is an occasion for parties the world
round. In some households in this country, it is the
time to dismantle the tree and remove all
decorations. In many countries in Europe a twelfthcake
is the center of the feast. This is usually a threelayer
white cake with white frosting. It can be
decorated with candies or candied fruits as
elaborately as you please. In each layer, before it is
baked, a bean is hidden, and whoever gets a piece of
cake with a bean in it becomes one of the three kings
for the balance of the evening — Caspar (Gaspar),
Melchior, and Balthazar. At a children's party this can
be great fun, because any child who forgets to
address a king by his proper name must pay a forfeit,
and this can lead to hilarious results.
In Latin America sweet bread shaped in a ring and
called King's Ring is served instead of cake.
Whoever finds the figurine baked in the ring will have
a luck-filled year!
King’s Ring
Ingredients
2/3 cup milk
3/4 cup sugar
1-1/4 teaspoons salt
6 Tablespoons shortening
2 packages active dry yeast
2/3 cup warm water (105°-115°)
3 eggs, beaten
7 cups all-purpose flour (approximately)
melted butter
cinnamon-sugar
1 cup chopped Brazil nuts
1 cup mixed diced candied fruit
Directions
Scald milk; stir in sugar, salt, and shortening. Cool to
lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in water; combine with
lukewarm milk. Stir in eggs, then 3 cups flour. Beat
smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to make soft
dough; knead until smooth and elastic. Put in wellgreased
bowl; turn to bring greased side to top.
Cover; let rise in warm place until doubled — about
1-1/2 hours. Punch down; turn out on lightly floured
board; divide in half. Roll each half into an oblong
about 14 by 12 inches. Brush with melted butter;
sprinkle generously with cinnamon-sugar. Combine
Brazil nuts and mixed candied fruit; sprinkle 1 cup
over each oblong. Wrap 2 dime-store figurines in
aluminum foil; tuck 1 into center of each oblong. Roll
into 2 ropes about 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Form
each rope into ring in greased 10-inch ring mold.
Brush with melted butter. Cover; let rise until doubled
— about 1 hour. Bake at 375° about 30 minutes.
Cool on rack. Frost and decorate if desired. Makes 2
rings.
