Steelcase surface materials are a smart choice for both business environments and the global
environment. We continue to create and provide products that advance environmental and
human health, social responsibility and economic prosperity. As part of this effort, we are
introducing Basalt (7230) paint. Basalt paint is the result of our ongoing efforts to reduce
waste, while offering our customers surface material choices that minimize our impact on
the environment.
Basalt paint is formulated by collecting “over-spray” material (materials that are not utilized
during the coating process) from Steelcase plants and combining it with resin, texturing
agents and pigments. The material is then reprocessed into the finished paint product. The
end result contains 85% over-spray/scrap material. In other words, we are reusing our waste
to produce Basalt paint.
Here are a few facts…
The amount of virgin material used to paint 1 file cabinet in standard black paint is equivalent
to the amount of virgin material used to paint 4 cabinets in Basalt paint.

For every 100 5-high file cabinets painted with Basalt paint, you are saving 93.75 lbs. of powder.
That means that 93.75 lbs. of powder never gets produced, used, transported or disposed of.
