Activities<br />

Latino Summit Scholarship<br />

Benito Juarez has been recognized by the<br />

Latino Summit Scholarship Committee<br />

with a $500.00 scholarship. Students from<br />

thirteen schools in the suburbs compete for<br />

this scholarship. In order for a student to<br />

be awarded the scholarship, he must have<br />

participated in the Latino Summit held<br />

each year in November at Harper College.<br />

In addition, to participate in he summit,<br />

applicants must demonstrate a drive and<br />

leadership qualities within the community.<br />

Benito was instrumental in planning a wide<br />

variety of activities such as toy drive, a variety<br />

of LASO activities.<br />

Summer Transition Program<br />

These five outstanding Huskies, Mary<br />

Martin, Paul Frederick, Sam Kim, Sara<br />

Douvalakis, Lauren Nagle, Pauline Yosep,<br />

Jessica Lynk, Anatasia Kondyukh each<br />

volunteered 60 plus hours this summer to<br />

work in the Summer Transition to <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

Program for incoming freshmen. During their<br />

summer vacations, these eight tutored over 50<br />

freshmen in writing and reading. They edited<br />

papers, worked on critical thinking skills,<br />

and helped improve reading comprehension.<br />

These students are true leaders. Thanks to all<br />

of you for your tireless dedication to serving<br />

your fellow Huskies.<br />

Student Giving<br />

Sarah Mulroe volunteered as a student<br />

aide for a full summer school semester. She<br />

dedicated this time by aiding in multiple<br />

classes. She helped some freshmen read<br />

the required summer reading, administered<br />

accommodations, tutored, assisted in the<br />

teaching of social skills, and escorted a<br />

student, which resulted in building a comfort<br />

level for them to begin high school. Sarah<br />

showed compassion, patience, and love for<br />

helping others. She was a valuable asset to the<br />

summer school program.<br />

Puzzle Fund Raiser<br />

Clarissa Cruz organized a puzzle drive and<br />

gathered of 300 puzzles for less fortunate kids.<br />

Hundreds of inner-city kids have educational<br />

opportunities because of her work and care.<br />

Thanks to Clarissa for her gratitude and for<br />

her dedication. She is the Best of Huskie<br />

spirit.<br />

Student Helped Someone in Need<br />

Malorie Tobias was in gym class when a<br />

fellow students became sick during a 12<br />

minute run and Malorie stopped on her own<br />

run in order to help the student who became<br />

ill and give comfort. We are so proud of<br />

Malorie for her compassion and kindness<br />

shown to the student.<br />

Great Improvement Achieved<br />

Some of the <strong>Hersey</strong> staff would like<br />

to recognize Jennifer Kraybill for her<br />

tremendous growth over the last three years.<br />

Jennifer has turned around her academic<br />

performance. Jennifer hopes to pursue a<br />

career in dietetics at Western IL University.<br />
