JOHN HERSEY HIGH SCHOOL’S
FOOD DRIVE!
The SOS Program and Student
Council sends the local communities
a heartfelt thanks for another amazing
food drive. We topped 40,000 cans
this year, and the quality of the
food was phenomenal. We also
collected over $3,000.00. At Happy
Huskey Halloween, 16 boxes of food
were donated from the community
attendees and our Choir donated 16
family boxes and $650.00. Hersey’s
band donated 24 family food boxes
and $400.00. What an amazing job
done by all.
On Friday, November 16, Hersey’s
students and faculty sponsors
delivered three truckloads of food to
the St. Augustine Center for Indian
Affairs in Chicago, a truckload of
food to CEDA Northwest in Mt. Prospect and also the food pantry at St. Alphonsus Church. 65 food
baskets and gift certificates were distributed for Hersey families! Your generosity and kind spirit has
helped those in our communities who have fallen on hard times.
Great Job Huskies! You have helped to brighten
the Holidays for others!
“Teamwork Makes The Dream Work”
in food in the beginning of October. Mrs. Hoijer stated she was very proud of them.
Mrs. Hoijer’s AP
Chemistry students
(21 students)
collected 5190 cans
for the food drive this
year. These students
actually started
talking about this
from the very first
day of school, and
they started to bring
Principal’s Message...
Hello Hersey parents!
Well, the Holiday season is upon us and I am sure you are busy with
a multitude of tasks and chores needing to be completed. Thanks for
taking the time to read this message to you. I know the education of
your son or daughter is a priority for you and that you are invested in
their learning.
By now, you are finding yourselves firmly infused into this semester’s
educational programming. The partnership formed between
you, your student, and this community of educators is essential
for developing high levels of student success. The collaborative approach to this educational
investment will allow you greater insight into the educational demands upon the students in our
high school. That insight will provide you with the information that you need in order to help
your children find balance in their efforts to be as involved as possible, while enjoying extra and
co-curricular activities as well. Your guidance is essential in this regard. I encourage you to stay
vigilant regarding the social/emotional status of your son or daughter as well. High school can
be such a challenging time. We wish to encourage our students to embrace as many educational
and extra-curricular activities as possible while remaining healthy and happy in what they do.
If we work together, I am confident that we will see our mutual efforts rewarded in a successful
experience.
You should be currently involved with your child and their registration for classes. I hope that
you consider asking questions regarding each and every academic opportunity offered to your
son or daughter. The selected course work will be part of a process of preparing them with the
skills necessary for college or career opportunities that will present themselves to them in a short
amount of time. These course selections are vital and important in that regard. We are lucky to
have the tools necessary to accomplish this goal at a high level of efficiency. But, of course, we
invite you to help us understand and respond to your child’s learning needs and desires. Keep
the lines of communication with our instructors open and positive in our collective efforts and I
am sure that we will be successful achieving the highest possible learning outcomes for your son
or daughter.
As this holiday season continues, I hope that you and your families are able to enjoy some time
together. We certainly have much to be thankful for as well as to celebrate. A bit of time for quiet
reflection will certainly be welcome for most of us in this harried and hurried holiday season.
Thanks for your positive support in our efforts to serve you and your children.
Happy holidays to you all! Enjoy the break!
Controversial Issues in the Classroom
Township High School District 214’s primary mission is to enable all students to learn the
skills, acquire the knowledge, and develop the behaviors necessary for them to reach their
full potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing society. In a democracy
that openly confronts acute and pressing political, social, economic, and moral problems,
it is likely that such issues will be evident in classrooms. Discussions about these issues
provide students with the type of learning experience that will help prepare them to meet the
challenges of a global changing society.
District 214 provides its parents/guardians an opportunity to grant or refuse permission for
their son or daughter to participate in a class activity or to request an alternative assignment
when study materials are deemed controversial. Parents/guardians with concerns regarding
controversial issues, materials, and curricula should contact the school’s principal/designee.
The administration has established guidelines, procedures, and safeguards for an unbiased,
impartial handling of controversial issues in the classroom.
College and Career Center News
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From the desk of Nancy Davis
Parents of seniors:
The hustle and bustle of the fall application season is beginning to slow. While some seniors
are still finalizing applications, nearly 73% of our seniors have already sent application materials to
more than 1500 colleges. For college-bound seniors who have finished their applications, it is time to
focus on scholarships and financial aid. Here are a few evening programs and suggestions to help
you and your senior with the financial aid and scholarship process:
Kick-off the Financial Aid Season with the District 214 Financial Aid Seminar for senior
parents on December 12 th at 7 p.m. in the Forest View Educational Center Theatre. The
Director of Financial Aid from Lake Forest College will walk you through the steps to apply,
qualify, and evaluate your student’s financial aid opportunities. Both the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CSS profile will be discussed.
Complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as a first step in qualifying
for Federal, State, and school-specific financial aid and scholarships. We recommend that all
senior parents file the FAFSA between January 1 st and the end of February when funding
levels are the greatest. To assist you, the District 214 college counselors will host a FAFSA
Completion Night:
When: February 5, 2013 at 6:30 AND 7:45 p.m.
Where: The Wheeling High School Library
Reservations: Call Kim Austin at 847-718-7046 after January 1 st
What to bring: Completed 2012 Federal Tax Returns and W2’s or 2011 Tax Returns,
bank and investment statements, and student’s driver’s license.
The goal is to complete the FAFSA and submit it to the U.S. Department of Education during
the evening. If you are not able to attend, remember to complete the FAFSA in January or
February of 2013, even if you need to estimate. Awards are made until funds are depleted.
Check the Financial Aid webpage for each college to see if there are additional forms
required for financial aid and scholarships. Some schools ask for the CSS Financial Aid
Profile (see https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp) or their own financial aid forms
in order to qualify for school scholarships. Additionally, colleges and universities may post
online scholarship applications for your student to complete.
Additional scholarship information can be found on the College Resources Page of the
JHHS website. You will find links to trusted search engines that will help you identify national
scholarships that match your student’s profile. There is also a comprehensive list of local
scholarships. New local scholarships are added daily so your student should check back on a
regular basis over the next few months.
And remember the College Career Center is closed for winter break between December 21 st and
January 7 th . During this period, we cannot answer emails/calls or processing requests for transcripts
or other application materials. Since our office needs 15 business days to process materials, any final
requests for January or early February deadlines, should be submitted now.
Parents of juniors:
Mid-junior year is the perfect time to start the college search process. Listed below are resources and
upcoming programs that will help you guide your son or daughter through this process:
In November, all parents of juniors were sent a six-page college-planning newsletter. This
newsletter suggested ways parents could help their sons and daughters begin the college
search and laid out a recommended timetable for junior year. If you did not receive this
information, you will find a copy posted under “Junior Resources” on the College Resources
page of the JHHS website.
In late October, we gave juniors tips on how to start their college search. We encouraged
them to make at least one campus visit in the next few months, to explore which college traits
are important to them. On the College Resources page of the JHHS website, you will also find
suggested college trips, questions to ask a college and a college comparison worksheet. We
hope this will help you and your student make the most of these visits.
There will be a special Parent University for parents of juniors on January 24, 2012 at
7p.m. in the JHHS Theatre. All junior parents are invited to learn how to help your child find a
college that is the “Right Fit” academically and financially. Topics covered will include the
college selection process, standardized testing, admissions criteria, campus visits, and
upcoming events.
Parents of sophomores:
Sophomore year, we encourage students to begin the career exploration process. Exploring careers
helps a student link what they are studying in the classroom to the world of work and sometimes
identifies potential careers or college majors. In recent weeks, your sophomore was asked to
complete a career interest inventory and identify elective classes that match up with their career
interests. You will find information about the career exploration process and career programming, on
the “Sophomore Resources” on the College Resources page of the JHHS website. If you were unable
to attend either the District or JHHS presentation titled, “So You Want to Go to College?”, you will also
find a copy of the PowerPoint presentation and a list of tips for students and their parents posted
there.
We look forward to working with you and your student regardless of where your son or daughter is in
their preparation for college. Please feel free to contact us at any time for an appointment or to ask
any questions about college or financial aid.
Gene Pavlenko
Congratulations to Gene Pavlenko, Hersey's Student of the Month for September! Nominated
by Mr. VanBladel, Gene is being acknowledged for his outstanding contributions to the automotive
practicum. Mr. VanBladel commented, “Gene is one of the hardest working students I have had
here at Hersey. He continually looks to help out other students, and does a great deal of work on
many staff cars. In addition, Gene travels to Wheeling High School every day to take another
class that is not offered here at Hersey. He is a great example of pursuing your passion.” Gene
is excited to continue his pursuit of a job in the automotive industry, as he has been accepted to
the very difficult automotive technology program at Southern Illinois University. He advises
Hersey students to “stay true to your beliefs and don’t be afraid to follow your dreams.”
Hersey Holds It's 2012 "Election Project," Brainchild of
Veteran Teacher Dale Dassonville
November 5, 2012
As the 2012 election season nears its culmination, so does the fifth installment of John Hersey High School's
"Election Project:" an ongoing series of speakers and activities that moves the students of John Hersey High School
beyond the doors of the standard curriculum. The intention of the project is to foster in students a civic awareness
pertaining to real world contemporary issues through their exposure to and immersion in the political process. The
"Election Project" is the brainchild of 35-year-teaching veteran, Dale Dassonville, who started at Buffalo Grove
High School in 1977 and transferred to Hersey in 2002.
"This project is consistent with John Hersey's goal to graduate informed and involved citizens," Dassonville
explains.
"A passion for intellectual citizenship fuels Hersey's Election Project," says Dassonville's fellow Hersey English
teacher, Jim Miks. "This belief in constructive public dialogue serves students well and engenders a just, thoughtful
political process. Dale's passion for civic education enhances student capacity to link learning to experience."
Hersey's English Division Head, Dr. Charles Venegoni, believes, "'The "Election Project'" brings civic concerns
and decisions directly in front of our students, who are afforded rare opportunities to engage in the issues that will
define their futures. These events define the emphasis on civic awareness and critical thinking that we cultivate in
our students."
Past speakers in the Election Project have included Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, Representative Bob
Dold, State Senators Matt Murphy and Dan Kotowski, State Representative David Harris, and numerous
candidates including Brad Schneider, Dan Seals, Bill Brady, and Rick Santorum. Activities have included
teacher presentations on campaign ads and the political process, political satire, and the impact of super-pacs on
current elections.
Venegoni claims, "Dale Dassonvile is a rare talent, a sophisticated intellectual with a wide range of diverse
experiences, who provides large numbers of students meaningful experiences that will impact considerably their
lives as students and their futures as citizens."
Over his career, Dassonville has influenced thousands of students and countless colleagues. He is a unique
teacher that understands that the students' education doesn't begin or end at his classroom door. Dassonville feels his
obligation is not limited to the students on his class roster, but to all students who walk the halls of Hersey. Since his
transfer to Hersey, he has been a leader in and organizer of the Forum series that supplements Hersey's academic
programs. "Forums" at Hersey are a shared-educational experience for all students, and Dassonville has readily
taken on this responsibility. Whether the presentation is on Hero Iconography, Medieval Architecture, or Aristotle
and Citizenship, Venegoni believes that these opportunities for students are, "…crucial to the intellectual community
and climate that typifies Hersey and its instructional model."
In his final year of teaching, Dassonville refuses to slow down, as this year's Election Project indicates. The
weeks leading up to the election have seen him juggling his regular schedule of classes with a hectic slate of
arranging and facilitating a multitude of speakers and activities, as his website daledassonville.com/epc.htm
demonstrates. Still, he continues to send more emails and make more phone calls in hopes to convince other
candidates, including Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, to visit Hersey and speak to the students. And, while
many candidates see this forum as a campaign stop, Dassonville steadfastly maintains a purely educational, and nonbiased,
experience for the students. Each speaker must choose a focus topic (role of government, alternatives to twoparty
system, the election process etc…) to speak about rather than just giving a "stump" speech, and the agreement
for each candidate is at least half of the time has to be set aside for student questions so that they can better shape
their educational experience. For Dassonville, there is no greater goal for education than to ensure that the students
of high schools today become capable and flourishing citizens of the world tomorrow.
The FCCLA Club at John Hersey High School Helps the
No Kid Hungry Program
The FCCLA (family, career, and community leaders of America) Club at John Hersey High
School has become involved in solving one of America’s largest crisis; Childhood Hunger. About
sixteen million, or one in five, children suffer from hunger. This affects the present and the future.
Children can’t focus in school when they’re hungry and they usually have lower test scores than
children who eat balanced meals. These children are also more susceptible to illnesses, and will
miss several days of school. When a student is so behind academically, that student is far less
likely to graduate from high school and will most likely not attend college. The results lead to an
adult that is far less likely to earn enough money to feed his/her own family. Childhood hunger is
detrimental to child development, education, and the economy.
Luckily, there is hope! By the year 2015, Share Our Strength’s program No Kid Hungry aims to
completely end childhood hunger in America. They are a reliable organization that will connect
families to effective nutrition programs that will supply them with the tools to provide healthy,
nutritious, and low cost meals everyday. In the summers, when children’s free/reduced school
lunch program is not available for them, the No Kid Hungry organization will provide families
with meals at special meal sites to make sure kids can just focus on being kids. Finally, No Kid
Hungry will educate the parents of the children on cooking and purchasing healthy food more
effectively.
For the first time, No Kid Hungry has approached FCCLA Clubs across the country to help earn
donations to make all of their amazing plans happen. At John Hersey High School, the students
involved in FCCLA have actively held bake sales and restaurant Dine and Shares. They also plan
on having a charity fashion show in January. Their efforts have been very successful so far, but
they still need the help of the community.
If you are interested in donating to this worthy cause, please visit nokidhungry.org to further
educate yourself and do one of two things:
Visit the JHHS Donations page at http://join.strength.org/site/TR/CEM/General?team_
id=124441&pg=team&fr_id=1160 to donate online or send a check made out to Share Our Strength
and send it to John Hersey High School at 1900 East Thomas Arlington Heights, IL 60004
This truly is the perfect way to open your heart and help end childhood hunger in America this
recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high
standards based on what teachers should know and be able to
do. National Board Certification is available nationwide for most
PreK–12 teachers.
As part of the certification process, candidates complete
10 assessments that are reviewed by trained teachers in their certificate areas. The
assessments include four portfolio entries that feature teaching practice and six
constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge. This process is an
incredible amount of work on the teacher’s behalf to achieve this certification. Our
congratulations to Mr. Stenzel.
Lou Cella
Class of 1981
Distinguished Alumni
for 2012
Lou Cella has been exposed to the arts his entire life. He grew up in a family of artists,
and pursued his passion through the art program here at Hersey. Through his involvement in
Theater, Choir, Speech, and Gymnastics, his desire to pursue a career in art was solidified.
Lou went on to Illinois State University, and graduated with a B.S. in Art in 1985.
After graduating, Lou worked as a graphic artist at an advertising agency. It wasn’t long,
however, before he discovered his true love – three-dimensional art. He enrolled in classes
at the Rotblatt Amrany Studio, a move that began his rise to becoming a nationally renowned
monumental sculptor. His extraordinary talents landed him a position with the studio after
completing his classes.
Lou has now opened his own business, Lou Cella Sculptures, while continuing to work
for several other studios as a sculptor and model fabricator. His sculptures include Harry
Caray, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and Ron Santo at Wrigley Field; Carlton Fisk and Frank
Thomas at U.S. Cellular Field; The Six Detroit Tigers and Ernie Harwell at Comerica Park in
Detroit; coach Barry Alvarez at the University of Wisconsin; Fathers Theodore Hesburgh and
Edmund Joyce at the University of Notre Dame; Clark Gable at the Clark Gable Museum in
Ohio; Will Robinson and Doug Collins at Illinois State University; and Orville Redenbacher in
Valparaiso, Indiana.
Congratulations to Mr. Lou Cella for winning the John Hersey High School Distinguished
Alumni Award winner for 2012.
Hersey Observes “Red Ribbon Week,”
Taking a Stand Against Drug Abuse
John Hersey High School invites the
community to take a visible stand against drugs
by celebrating “Red Ribbon Week” Oct. 22-26.
Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of alcohol,
tobacco, and other drug use and the problems
related to drugs facing our community. The
week is an opportunity to encourage parents,
educators, business owners, and other
community organizations to promote healthy,
drug-free lifestyles.
Hersey will join forces with other
communities in promoting National Plant the
Promise Week. Schools, businesses, families and
youth across America will be planting bulbs
during Red Ribbon Week. Planting flowers is a
symbol of hope, and a great way to involve both
children and parents in your Red Ribbon Week
celebration. These bulbs will bloom into vibrant
red tulips and will serve as a reminder to stay
drug free.
“Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity
to be vocal and visible in our efforts to reduce
the use of drugs and support those youth who
are drug-free,” said Jeff Bondora. “Research
shows that children are less likely to use alcohol
and other drugs when parents and other
role models are clear and consistent in their
opposition to substance use and abuse.”
classes. She helped some freshmen read
the required summer reading, administered
accommodations, tutored, assisted in the
teaching of social skills, and escorted a
student, which resulted in building a comfort
level for them to begin high school. Sarah
showed compassion, patience, and love for
helping others. She was a valuable asset to the
summer school program.
Puzzle Fund Raiser
Clarissa Cruz organized a puzzle drive and
gathered of 300 puzzles for less fortunate kids.
Hundreds of inner-city kids have educational
opportunities because of her work and care.
Thanks to Clarissa for her gratitude and for
her dedication. She is the Best of Huskie
Student Helped Someone in Need
Malorie Tobias was in gym class when a
fellow students became sick during a 12
minute run and Malorie stopped on her own
run in order to help the student who became
ill and give comfort. We are so proud of
Malorie for her compassion and kindness
shown to the student.
Special Olympic Huskies!
The Fall Special Olympics season started
off with our 2 volleyball teams in action.
The Huskies hosted the District Volleyball
Tournament, in which the Brown team took the
silver medal and the White team took the gold
medal. This qualified the White team for the
State Tournament. It
was held in Rockford
at Harlem High
School the weekend
before Halloween.
The Huskies
took the bronze
medal in Division
1 Modified with a
victory over Rockford.
Floor Hockey team took the Gold Medal at
State and are Division 1 Gold Medal State
Champs. Team members are: Danny Sinclair,
Catie Nowak, Sam Kent, Ishita Shah, Christina
Cassata, Anton Yakimovich.
Basketball has also started. The Huskies will
have one boys team and one girls team in action.
The Area Holiday Tournament will be
held here at Hersey on Sunday, December 2nd.
Over 30 teams will be here on that day for the
competition. In January, the boys team will
compete at the District Tournament to try and
qualify for State.
Snowshoeing practices have also started. The
Huskies have a new group of athletes ready to
compete. The District Tournament will be held
in January and the Huskies have visions of
competing at State, at Chestnut Mountain Ski
Resort, in February. All we need is a few gold
medals in January!
