New symbol of rich <strong>India</strong>n culture<br />

designed with architectural excellence.<br />

ISKCON has built the largest Radha Krishna Temple in <strong>South</strong> <strong>India</strong> on the ECR.<br />

This was formally inaugurated on 26th April 2012.<br />

The construction of this ‘Centre for Spiritual Art<br />

and Culture’ began in 2002. Spread over an<br />

area of over 1.5 acres, the temple has a 7000<br />

sq ft temple hall on the first floor, an auditorium<br />

for cultural and spiritual programs on the ground<br />

floor and a prasadam hall in the basement.<br />

In the temple hall, there are three beautifully<br />

carved teak-wood altars which house the deities<br />

of Lord Krishna with His consort Srimati Radharani;<br />

Lord Caitanya with Lord Nityananda; and<br />

Lord Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra. These<br />

beautiful deities from Jaipur and Odisha will no<br />

doubt awaken the devotees’ love for Them with<br />

Their glistening eyes and beaming smile.<br />

The daily decorations of the deities are a great<br />

treat.<br />

Designed under the expertise of His Holiness<br />

Bhanu Swami, the temple has imbibed various<br />

attributes from Vedic scripture and is inspired

by Pallava architecture. Though Japanese by birth, His Holiness is associated with the Hare Krishna<br />

Movement for more than 40 years and is considered an authority on the Shastras. His expertise in<br />

Sanskrit is well known.<br />

The entrance to the temple is marked by the representation of the Universe or the bhu-mandala<br />

on the marble floor. Be it ancient Vedic puranas or Jain or Buddhist cosmology, the Universe is<br />

described as a series of circular islands surrounding a central pillar called Mount Meru. The design<br />

on the floor at the entrance depicts the same universal pattern.<br />

It is believed that the eight corners of a temple, or any house for that matter, are governed by eight<br />

avataras of the Lord. These are wonderfully depicted in the large windows of the temple along with<br />

a yantra for each. Through the large windows on the Eastern side, the rays of the Sun can be seen<br />

reaching upto the deity’s altar revealing His beautiful form.<br />

Thus ISKCON Chennai promises its visitors a serene atmosphere which they can relish. The visitors’<br />

book abounds with comments such as “peaceful”, “very clean”, “excellent”, “will visit again” etc.<br />

Temple Darshan Timings: 7.30am to 1pm, 4pm to 8pm. Short simple arati from 9pm to 9.20pm.<br />

Sunday Noon Program: 11am to 2pm: Bhajans, Bhagavad-gita lecture in Tamil and English, Japa<br />

Meditation, Arati-kirtan and lunch prasadam for all.<br />

Sunday Evening Program: 5:30 pm to 9 pm: Sri Sri Radha Krishna Palak (palanquin) seva, japa<br />

meditation, Arati-kirtan and Bhagavad-gita lecture.

Reduce Facial Hair Growth<br />

Even 5thought It is not considered aesthetically pleasing<br />

for women to sport some amount of facial fuzz.<br />

Given below are therefore some tips to help reduce unwanted facial hair<br />

• Add 30 grams of sugar to some lemon juice in a bowl of water. Mix well and apply it<br />

in the direction of the hair growth. Leave this for 15 minutes and rinse. Repeat once a<br />

week.<br />

• The traditional mixture of gram flour, turmeric and curd is said to marginally reduce<br />

hair growth. Apply this mixture on your face and rinse it once it dries<br />

• A mixture of papaya and turmeric helps contain hair growth,and, what’s more, it also<br />

exfoliates the skin. Massage the paste on your face for 15 minutes for best results.<br />

• Potato is a bleaching agent and when mixed with yellow lentil paste it makes the<br />

hair color lighter and also helps remove unwanted facial hair. Apply and leave for 15<br />

minutes before rinsing.<br />

• A banana-oatmeal scrub is simple, yet effective. Apply the paste for about 15 minutes<br />

and wash off with water. Repeat this twice a week

The grand manner in which actress Amala<br />

Paul’s wedding was planned has surely made<br />

it one of the biggest we have seen in a long<br />

time. We heard that the dusky beauty left no<br />

stone unturned in ensuring that her wedding<br />

extravaganza was a much talked about affair.<br />

What’s more, the bride and the groom were<br />

personally involved in planning their special<br />

day.<br />

We had earlier heard that the celebrated<br />

couple had the ring exchange ceremony at<br />

Jude Church, Choondi, in Kochi on June 7.<br />

Though the engagement was a private affair<br />

to be attended by the couple’s close friends,<br />

a five-hour long star-studded Sangeeth ceremony<br />

was held at CIAL Convention Centre,<br />

Nedumbassery, the same evening. The ceremony<br />

was reportedly attended by their friends<br />

and associates from the film fraternity.<br />

The couple had chosen a Rajasthani theme for<br />

the occasion and the entire hall was decked up<br />

in hues of pink in tune with the theme. Amala’s<br />

mother had told us earlier, “For the traditional<br />

church engagement, Amala will wear a white<br />

gown designed by Anita Dongra. She will<br />

wear a diamond neck piece to go with it.<br />

For the Sangeeth, she will wear a traditional<br />

lehenga in pink with golden embellishments,<br />

and uncut diamond accessories.”<br />

Meanwhile, amidst all this wedding brouhaha,<br />

Amala is busy with the shoot of Rajesh<br />

The new X5, despite its 2145kg kerb<br />

weight (5kg down on the old one),is quick.<br />

The turbo-diesel engine now makes 10bhp and<br />

2.1kgm of torque more than before, which lets<br />

the X5 do 0-100kph in 7.05 seconds, There’s<br />

plenty of power available from the moment<br />

you tap the throttle, the midrange is very strong<br />

and the engine pulls eagerly all the way to the<br />

redline.<br />

The X5 now comes standard with air<br />

suspension,self-levelling rear-suspension<br />

and electronic damper control. BMW has<br />

undertaken Quite a few changes under the<br />

skin of this updated car. There’s extensive use<br />

of ultra high-tensiled steel in the monocoque<br />

body shell , the bonnet is nade of aluminium<br />

and the side panels are thermo-plastic. The car<br />

has also been made a lot more refined,with<br />

less transmission noise filtering through and new<br />

7-series based seats reducing vibrations.<br />

Body control is excellent,the steering is direct<br />

weighty enough and<br />

it sticks to the tarmac, even across wet<br />

patches. The latest xDrive system in this car<br />

can set 100percent of the power to either<br />

axle and this,along with the dynamic stability<br />

control,ensures its sure-foot-edness even on<br />

greasy roads. As for equipment, it ‘s got a<br />

Harman kardon sound system, four-zone climate<br />

controls and cruise control with braking function.<br />

‘’What I love most about palazzo pants is that they make you appear slim. Also,you have the option<br />

of wearing high-or low-waisted ones depending on what suits you best. I Love wearing cropped tops<br />

and nude make-up with my high waist palazzos while I prefer wearing oversized tops on low-waist<br />

palazzos.<br />

From printed to monochrome, pleated to full flare, cropped to floor-sweeping, palazzo pants come in<br />

a variety of avatars. Look for them in satin,crepe,silk,cotton-mix,linen or even stretch wool. As far as the<br />

colour palette goes, don’t just wear white or black. Give shades like azure blue, emerald green and<br />

baby pink a chance. Pastel shades of course are always appealing.<br />

“Palazzo pants are not for everyone but if you know your body type that helps you style your attire<br />

to accentuate your best features. If you’re looking to highlight a slim waist, wear a belt or full flare<br />

International film festival<br />

(also popularly known<br />

as CWIFF) is promoted by<br />

Mr Ravichandran Raj, Director<br />

and Producer of Columbus<br />

Production. The annual event<br />

is exclusively meant to focus<br />

the limelight on women in<br />

films, from directors to actors.<br />

Women have played a<br />

phenomenal role and CWIFF<br />

provides a platform for<br />

women as well as budding<br />

talent to express their creative<br />

minds on an international<br />

platform.<br />

This year’s event was marked<br />

with a valedictory and award<br />

show held at the Ethiraj<br />

College, Anna Salai, on May<br />

25, 2014 at 6:00 pm. The<br />

event was graced by eminent<br />

people from the Tamil film<br />

industry. The chief guest of<br />

the event was actor Mr Aadhi<br />

who shared his views about<br />

the festival. He also said that<br />

festivals of this kind specially<br />

designed for women must be<br />

welcomed as these would help<br />

women filmmakers to achieve<br />

their dreams in the Tamil film<br />

industry.<br />

Cartoonist Mr. Madhan,<br />

jury member of CWIFF<br />

said, “Having a film festival<br />

dedicated to women is a<br />

wonderful idea. There are<br />

only a few women directors in<br />

the whole world and having<br />

a festival like this would give<br />

them an edge. Women have<br />

a lot of talent and creativity<br />

which is equal to any man,<br />

but they aren’t given ample<br />

opportunities. A few years<br />

back, a woman director<br />

won the Oscars and from<br />

henceforth there should be<br />

nothing stopping them.”<br />

“They should overcome the<br />

barriers and we should give<br />

them all that’s necessary for<br />

them to do so. CWIFF is a<br />

massive platform for women<br />

directors. For all those aspiring<br />

women out there who want<br />

to make it big CWIFF is their<br />

turning point!” Director Ms.<br />

Priya who has also been a<br />

jury member of CWIFF shared<br />

her experience of being a<br />

part of the jury panel for the<br />

festival said, “I am privileged<br />

to be a part of CWIFF at its<br />

very first venture. I have seen<br />

so many films here; each one<br />

was unique in its content and<br />

the format they have taken to<br />

tell the story.”<br />

Director Ms. Nandhini and<br />

film critic Mr. Satish Kumar<br />

shared their views about<br />

the film festival and told the<br />

filmmakers that the movies<br />

unanimously close to all the<br />

jury members have been<br />

selected and been awarded<br />

and that it was great to see all<br />

the movies. Totally 26 awards<br />

were given to the winners<br />

by the Chief Guest and by<br />

the jury members. Mr. Uday<br />

Kumar, Festival Director, made<br />

the closing remarks.

After being one of the most eligible girls on the block, TV show host Dhivyadharshini has finally<br />

decided to tie the knot with Srikanth Ravichandran, an up and coming filmmaker and her best<br />

friend. “Everything happened so quickly,” reveals an excited DD adding, “One morning, two days<br />

ago to be specific, my parents decided on the boy and by evening they decided the date.” Talking<br />

about Srikanth, DD says, “We are a group of three – Srikanth, another friend of ours called Pappu<br />

and I. We have seen each other through everything – the highs and the lows. So we know each<br />

other very well.” However, DD did have apprehensions about marrying her best friend. “I thought<br />

it would be strange. But then, if you look at arranged marriages, what happens is that you become<br />

friends with your husband all of a sudden.”<br />

With the big day hardly a month away – June 29 to be precise –<br />

DD says everything is happening very quickly. Ask her if she has a dream wedding in mind and<br />

she laughs. “There is no time to dream. Our parents have assured us of taking care of all the<br />

details.” It will be a proper Tamil Brahmin wedding, though, since Srikanth is a Brahmin. The<br />

wedding will be a glitzy affair and will be held in Chennai. DD also reveals that she will throw a<br />

party afterwards for her friends.

“it has been so long since I wore a skirt” , says Sundari<br />

Sivasubbu with a smile, looking dashing in a long brown<br />

skirt and lime green blouse with a funky neck piece. A few<br />

days back on Saturday, Sundari had taken time off from her<br />

corporate job as communications manager with an IT firm in<br />

the city, to be on the ramp. The stage? National Institute of<br />

Fashion Technology {NIFT} Chennai’s annual fashion event.<br />

Sundari’s clothes were designed by enthusiastic NIFT<br />

students, who had coordinated with Ability Foundation<br />

to design accessible fashion wear for the physically<br />

challenged. Ever since she became wheelchair-bound about<br />

five years ago, skirts had become her favourite attire. If the<br />

skirt was a tight fit it would cause sores on her skin; if it was<br />

loose it got entangled in the wheels of her chair So NIFT<br />

students designed a skirt with a snug fit, short at the back<br />

and longer in front, so it would not get entangled. Next on<br />

the cards for sundari? Stylish and accessible footwear.

HM Suspends operations Hindustan motors,the oldest carmaker in the country, has suspended<br />

operations at its Uttarpara plant. The company cited worsening conditions at the 40,000-units-perannum<br />

plant,including very low productivity,growing indiscipline,critical shortage of funds,lack of<br />

demand for its core product (the Ambassador) and large accumulation of liabilites. HM has been<br />

looking for a strategic investor for the past few years but has failed to find anyone willing to invest in<br />

the entire company, Following this,the carmaker decided to demerge and transfe<br />

SOCCER HISTORY<br />

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in the rear of the<br />

headquarters of the Union Française de Sports Athlétiques at the Rue Saint Honoré 229 in Paris<br />

on May 21, 1904. The foundation act was signed by the authorised representatives of the<br />

following associations:<br />

• France - Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA)<br />

• Belgium - Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports (UBSSA)<br />

• Denmark - Dansk Boldspil Union (DBU)<br />

• Netherlands - Nederlandsche Voetbal Bond (NVB)<br />

• Spain - Madrid Football Club<br />

• Sweden - Svenska Bollspells Förbundet (SBF)<br />

• Switzerland - Association Suisse de Football (ASF)<br />

The first FIFA statutes were laid down and the following points determined: the reciprocal and exclusive<br />

recognition of the national associations represented and attending; clubs and players were forbidden to<br />

play simultaneously for different national associations; recognition by the other associations of a player’s<br />

suspension announced by an association; and the playing of matches according to the Laws of the Game of<br />

the Football Association Ltd.<br />

The success of the Olympic Football Tournament intensified FlFA’s wish for its own world championship.<br />

Questionnaires were sent to the affiliated associations asking whether they agreed to the organisation of a<br />

tournament and under what conditions. A special committee examined the question, with President Jules<br />

Rimet being the driving force. He was aided by the untiring Secretary of the French Football Federation,<br />

Henri Delaunay.<br />

Moreover, FIFA’s national association was willing to cover all the costs, including the travel and<br />

accommodation of the participating teams. Any possible profit would be shared, while Uruguay would<br />

take on the deficit. These arguments were decisive. The FIFA Congress in Barcelona in 1929 assigned<br />

Uruguay as first host country of the FIFA World Cup. since the other candidates had withdrawn.

Autism is known as a complex developmental disability. Experts believe that Autism<br />

presents itself during the first three years of a person’s life. The condition is the result<br />

of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting<br />

development of the person’s communication and social interaction skills.<br />

People with autism have issues with non-verbal communication, a wide range of social<br />

interactions, and activities that include an element of play and/or banter.<br />

Genomic research is beginning to discover that people with the autism spectrum disorders<br />

probably share genetic traits with individuals with ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder),<br />

bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or clinical depression. A team at the Cross Disorders Group of<br />

the Psychiatric Genomic Consortium suggests that the five mental disorders and illnesses have the<br />

same common inherited genetic variations.<br />

What is ASD?<br />

ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder and can sometimes be referred to as Autistic Spectrum<br />

Disorder. In this text Autism and ASD mean the same. ASDs are any developmental disabilities<br />

that have been caused by a brain abnormality. A person with an ASD typically has difficulty with<br />

social and communication skills.<br />

A person with ASD will typically also prefer to stick to a set of behaviors and will resist any<br />

major (and many minor) changes to daily activities. Several relatives and friends of people with<br />

ASDs have commented that if the person knows a change is coming in advance, and has time to<br />

Autism (or ASD) is a wide-spectrum disorder. This means that no two people with autism will have<br />

exactly the same symptoms. As well as experiencing varying combinations of symptoms, some<br />

people will have mild symptoms while others will have severe ones. Below is a list of the most<br />

commonly found characteristics identified among people with an ASD.<br />

Social skills<br />

The way in which a person with an ASD interacts with another individual is quite different compared<br />

to how the rest of the population behaves. If the symptoms are not severe, the person with ASD may<br />

seem socially clumsy, sometimes offensive in his/her comments, or out of sync with everyone else. If<br />

the symptoms are more severe, the person may seem not to be interested in other people at all.<br />

It is common for relatives, friends and people who interact with someone with an ASD to comment<br />

that the ASD sufferer makes very little eye contact. However, as health care professionals, teachers<br />

and others are improving their ability to detect signs of autism at an earlier age than before, eye<br />

contact among people with autism is improving. In many cases, if the symptoms are not severe, the<br />

person can be taught that eye contact is important for most people and he/she will remember to<br />

look people in the eye.<br />

A person with autism may often miss the cues we give each other when we want to catch<br />

somebody’s attention. The person with ASD might not know that somebody is trying to talk to them.<br />

They may also be very interested in talking to a particular person or group of people, but does not<br />

have the same skills as others to become fully involved. To put it more simply, they lack the necessary<br />

playing and talking skills.<br />

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States.<br />

He preserved the Union dduring the United States’ first Civil War and brought about the emancipation<br />

of slaves<br />

In 1844, Abraham Lincoln partnered with William Herndon in the practice of law. Though<br />

the two had different jurisprudent styles, they developed a close professional and personal<br />

relationship. Lincoln made a good living in his early years as a lawyer, but found that Springfield<br />

alone didn’t offer enough work, so to supplement his income, he followed the court as it made its<br />

rounds on the circuit to the various county seats in Illinois.

Abraham Lincoln (or “Abe” as he was affectionately called) is regarded as one of America’s<br />

greatest heroes due to both his incredible impact on the nation and his unique appeal. His is a<br />

remarkable story of the rise from humble beginnings to achieve the highest office in the land;<br />

then, a sudden and tragic death at a time when his country needed him most to complete the<br />

great task remaining before the nation. Lincoln’s distinctively human and humane personality<br />

and historical role as Saviour of the Union and emancipator of the slaves creates a legacy that<br />

endures. His eloquence of democracy and his insistence that the Union was worth saving embody<br />

the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve.<br />

When young Abe was 9 years old his mother Nancy died of tremetol (milk sickness) at age<br />

34 and the event had a devastating effect on him. He grew more alienated from his father and<br />

quietly resented the hard work placed on him at an early age. A few months after Nancy’s death,<br />

his father Thomas married Sarah Bush Johnston, a Kentucky widow with three children of her<br />

own. She was a strong and affectionate woman with whom Abraham quickly bonded. Though<br />

both his parents were most likely illiterate, Sarah encouraged Abraham to read. It was while<br />

growing into manhood that he received his formal education—an estimated total of 18 months—a<br />

few days or weeks at a time. Reading material was in short supply in the <strong>India</strong>na wilderness.<br />

Neighbors recalled how Abraham would walk for miles to borrow a book. He undoubtedly read<br />

the family Bible and probably other popular books at that time such as Robinson Crusoe, Pilgrims<br />

Progress and Aesop’s Fables.<br />

He married Mary Todd, and they had four boys, only one of whom lived to maturity. In 1858<br />

Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator. He lost the election, but in debating with<br />

Douglas he gained a national reputation that won him the Republican nomination for President in<br />

1860.<br />

As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organisation. Further, he<br />

rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the<br />

Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy.<br />

Lincoln won re-election in 1864, as Union military triumphs heralded an end to the war. In his<br />

planning for peace, the President was flexible and generous, encouraging <strong>South</strong>erners to lay<br />

down their arms and join speedily in the reunion<br />

The spirit that guided him was clearly that of his Second Inaugural Address, now inscribed on one<br />

wall of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.: “With malice toward none; with charity for all;<br />

with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we<br />

are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds.... “<br />

On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington by<br />

John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the <strong>South</strong>. The opposite was<br />

the result, for with Lincoln’s death, the possibility of peace with magnanimity died.
