New symbol of rich Indian culture 

designed with architectural excellence. 

ISKCON has built the largest Radha Krishna Temple in South India on the ECR. 

This was formally inaugurated on 26th April 2012. 

The construction of this ‘Centre for Spiritual Art 

and Culture’ began in 2002. Spread over an 

area of over 1.5 acres, the temple has a 7000 

sq ft temple hall on the first floor, an auditorium 

for cultural and spiritual programs on the ground 

floor and a prasadam hall in the basement. 

In the temple hall, there are three beautifully 

carved teak-wood altars which house the deities 

of Lord Krishna with His consort Srimati Radharani; 

Lord Caitanya with Lord Nityananda; and 

Lord Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra. These 

beautiful deities from Jaipur and Odisha will no 

doubt awaken the devotees’ love for Them with 

Their glistening eyes and beaming smile. 

The daily decorations of the deities are a great 

treat. 

Designed under the expertise of His Holiness 

Bhanu Swami, the temple has imbibed various 

attributes from Vedic scripture and is inspired


by Pallava architecture. Though Japanese by birth, His Holiness is associated with the Hare Krishna 

Movement for more than 40 years and is considered an authority on the Shastras. His expertise in 

Sanskrit is well known. 

The entrance to the temple is marked by the representation of the Universe or the bhu-mandala 

on the marble floor. Be it ancient Vedic puranas or Jain or Buddhist cosmology, the Universe is 

described as a series of circular islands surrounding a central pillar called Mount Meru. The design 

on the floor at the entrance depicts the same universal pattern. 

It is believed that the eight corners of a temple, or any house for that matter, are governed by eight 

avataras of the Lord. These are wonderfully depicted in the large windows of the temple along with 

a yantra for each. Through the large windows on the Eastern side, the rays of the Sun can be seen 

reaching upto the deity’s altar revealing His beautiful form. 

Thus ISKCON Chennai promises its visitors a serene atmosphere which they can relish. The visitors’ 

book abounds with comments such as “peaceful”, “very clean”, “excellent”, “will visit again” etc. 

Temple Darshan Timings: 7.30am to 1pm, 4pm to 8pm. Short simple arati from 9pm to 9.20pm. 

Sunday Noon Program: 11am to 2pm: Bhajans, Bhagavad-gita lecture in Tamil and English, Japa 

Meditation, Arati-kirtan and lunch prasadam for all. 

Sunday Evening Program: 5:30 pm to 9 pm: Sri Sri Radha Krishna Palak (palanquin) seva, japa 

meditation, Arati-kirtan and Bhagavad-gita lecture.


Reduce Facial Hair Growth 

Even 5thought It is not considered aesthetically pleasing 

for women to sport some amount of facial fuzz. 

Given below are therefore some tips to help reduce unwanted facial hair 

• Add 30 grams of sugar to some lemon juice in a bowl of water. Mix well and apply it 

in the direction of the hair growth. Leave this for 15 minutes and rinse. Repeat once a 

week. 

• The traditional mixture of gram flour, turmeric and curd is said to marginally reduce 

hair growth. Apply this mixture on your face and rinse it once it dries 

• A mixture of papaya and turmeric helps contain hair growth,and, what’s more, it also 

exfoliates the skin. Massage the paste on your face for 15 minutes for best results. 

• Potato is a bleaching agent and when mixed with yellow lentil paste it makes the 

hair color lighter and also helps remove unwanted facial hair. Apply and leave for 15 

minutes before rinsing. 

• A banana-oatmeal scrub is simple, yet effective. Apply the paste for about 15 minutes 

and wash off with water. Repeat this twice a week

INDIAN WEDDING


The grand manner in which actress Amala 

Paul’s wedding was planned has surely made 

it one of the biggest we have seen in a long 

time. We heard that the dusky beauty left no 

stone unturned in ensuring that her wedding 

extravaganza was a much talked about affair. 

What’s more, the bride and the groom were 

personally involved in planning their special 

day. 

We had earlier heard that the celebrated 

couple had the ring exchange ceremony at 

Jude Church, Choondi, in Kochi on June 7. 

Though the engagement was a private affair 

to be attended by the couple’s close friends, 

a five-hour long star-studded Sangeeth ceremony 

was held at CIAL Convention Centre, 

Nedumbassery, the same evening. The ceremony 

was reportedly attended by their friends 

and associates from the film fraternity. 

The couple had chosen a Rajasthani theme for 

the occasion and the entire hall was decked up 

in hues of pink in tune with the theme. Amala’s 

mother had told us earlier, “For the traditional 

church engagement, Amala will wear a white 

gown designed by Anita Dongra. She will 

wear a diamond neck piece to go with it. 

For the Sangeeth, she will wear a traditional 

lehenga in pink with golden embellishments, 

and uncut diamond accessories.” 

Meanwhile, amidst all this wedding brouhaha, 

Amala is busy with the shoot of Rajesh 

Pillai’s “Mili” starring Nivin Pauly.

to the hotel manager

The new X5, despite its 2145kg kerb 

weight (5kg down on the old one),is quick. 

The turbo-diesel engine now makes 10bhp and 

2.1kgm of torque more than before, which lets 

the X5 do 0-100kph in 7.05 seconds, There’s 

plenty of power available from the moment 

you tap the throttle, the midrange is very strong 

and the engine pulls eagerly all the way to the 

redline. 

The X5 now comes standard with air 

suspension,self-levelling rear-suspension 

and electronic damper control. BMW has 

undertaken Quite a few changes under the 

skin of this updated car. There’s extensive use 

of ultra high-tensiled steel in the monocoque 

body shell , the bonnet is nade of aluminium 

and the side panels are thermo-plastic. The car 

has also been made a lot more refined,with 

less transmission noise filtering through and new 

7-series based seats reducing vibrations. 

Body control is excellent,the steering is direct 

weighty enough and 

it sticks to the tarmac, even across wet 

patches. The latest xDrive system in this car 

can set 100percent of the power to either 

axle and this,along with the dynamic stability 

control,ensures its sure-foot-edness even on 

greasy roads. As for equipment, it ‘s got a 

Harman kardon sound system, four-zone climate 

controls and cruise control with braking function.

also has a panoramic sunroof and a 

touch-sensitive iDrive controller that lets 

you scribble on it to search for functions 

or type in phone numbers There’s a BMW 

apps option that lets you connect to Tunein 

Radio (an internet-based radio channel 

that picks up stations from around the 

world as well as in-car Facebook and 

Twitter access. 

So the new X5 looks better,there’s more 

equipment, the interiors are improved and 

it is as exciting to drive as ever before.

to accentuate your best features. If you’re looking to highlight a slim waist, wear a belt or full flare

International film festival 

The Chennai women’s 

International film festival 

(also popularly known 

as CWIFF) is promoted by 

Mr Ravichandran Raj, Director 

and Producer of Columbus 

Production. The annual event 

is exclusively meant to focus 

the limelight on women in 

films, from directors to actors. 

Women have played a 

phenomenal role and CWIFF 

provides a platform for 

women as well as budding 

talent to express their creative 

minds on an international 

platform. 

This year’s event was marked 

with a valedictory and award 

show held at the Ethiraj 

College, Anna Salai, on May 

25, 2014 at 6:00 pm. The 

event was graced by eminent 

people from the Tamil film 

industry. The chief guest of 

the event was actor Mr Aadhi 

who shared his views about 

the festival. He also said that 

festivals of this kind specially 

designed for women must be 

welcomed as these would help 

women filmmakers to achieve 

their dreams in the Tamil film 

industry. 

Cartoonist Mr. Madhan, 

jury member of CWIFF 

said, “Having a film festival 

dedicated to women is a 

wonderful idea. There are 

only a few women directors in 

the whole world and having 

a festival like this would give 

them an edge. Women have 

a lot of talent and creativity 

which is equal to any man, 

but they aren’t given ample 

opportunities. A few years 

back, a woman director 

won the Oscars and from 

henceforth there should be 

nothing stopping them.” 

“They should overcome the 

barriers and we should give 

them all that’s necessary for 

them to do so. CWIFF is a 

massive platform for women 

directors. For all those aspiring 

women out there who want 

to make it big CWIFF is their 

turning point!” Director Ms. 

Priya who has also been a 

jury member of CWIFF shared 

her experience of being a 

part of the jury panel for the 

festival said, “I am privileged 

to be a part of CWIFF at its 

very first venture. I have seen 

so many films here; each one 

was unique in its content and 

the format they have taken to 

tell the story.” 

Director Ms. Nandhini and 

film critic Mr. Satish Kumar 

shared their views about 

the film festival and told the 

filmmakers that the movies 

unanimously close to all the 

jury members have been 

selected and been awarded 

and that it was great to see all 

the movies. Totally 26 awards 

were given to the winners 

by the Chief Guest and by 

the jury members. Mr. Uday 

Kumar, Festival Director, made 

the closing remarks.


DD FINALLY 

Meets Her Match


After being one of the most eligible girls on the block, TV show host Dhivyadharshini has finally 

decided to tie the knot with Srikanth Ravichandran, an up and coming filmmaker and her best 

friend. “Everything happened so quickly,” reveals an excited DD adding, “One morning, two days 

ago to be specific, my parents decided on the boy and by evening they decided the date.” Talking 

about Srikanth, DD says, “We are a group of three – Srikanth, another friend of ours called Pappu 

and I. We have seen each other through everything – the highs and the lows. So we know each 

other very well.” However, DD did have apprehensions about marrying her best friend. “I thought 

it would be strange. But then, if you look at arranged marriages, what happens is that you become 

friends with your husband all of a sudden.” 

With the big day hardly a month away – June 29 to be precise – 

DD says everything is happening very quickly. Ask her if she has a dream wedding in mind and 

she laughs. “There is no time to dream. Our parents have assured us of taking care of all the 

details.” It will be a proper Tamil Brahmin wedding, though, since Srikanth is a Brahmin. The 

wedding will be a glitzy affair and will be held in Chennai. DD also reveals that she will throw a 

party afterwards for her friends.

“it has been so long since I wore a skirt” , says Sundari 

Sivasubbu with a smile, looking dashing in a long brown 

skirt and lime green blouse with a funky neck piece. A few 

days back on Saturday, Sundari had taken time off from her 

corporate job as communications manager with an IT firm in 

the city, to be on the ramp. The stage? National Institute of 

Fashion Technology {NIFT} Chennai’s annual fashion event. 

Sundari’s clothes were designed by enthusiastic NIFT 

students, who had coordinated with Ability Foundation 

to design accessible fashion wear for the physically 

challenged. Ever since she became wheelchair-bound about 

five years ago, skirts had become her favourite attire. If the 

skirt was a tight fit it would cause sores on her skin; if it was 

loose it got entangled in the wheels of her chair So NIFT 

students designed a skirt with a snug fit, short at the back 

and longer in front, so it would not get entangled. Next on

HM Suspends operations Hindustan motors,the oldest carmaker in the country, has suspended 

operations at its Uttarpara plant. The company cited worsening conditions at the 40,000-units-perannum 

plant,including very low productivity,growing indiscipline,critical shortage of funds,lack of 

demand for its core product (the Ambassador) and large accumulation of liabilites. HM has been 

looking for a strategic investor for the past few years but has failed to find anyone willing to invest in 

the entire company, Following this,the carmaker decided to demerge and transfe 

its chennai car plant (CCP) as a going concern to its fully owned subsidiary - Hindustan Motor 

Finance Corporation Ltd (HMFCL) in january 2013

FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) 

SOCCER HISTORY 

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in the rear of the 

headquarters of the Union Française de Sports Athlétiques at the Rue Saint Honoré 229 in Paris 

on May 21, 1904. The foundation act was signed by the authorised representatives of the 

following associations: 

• France - Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA) 

• Belgium - Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports (UBSSA) 

• Denmark - Dansk Boldspil Union (DBU) 

• Netherlands - Nederlandsche Voetbal Bond (NVB) 

• Spain - Madrid Football Club 

• Sweden - Svenska Bollspells Förbundet (SBF) 

• Switzerland - Association Suisse de Football (ASF) 

The first FIFA statutes were laid down and the following points determined: the reciprocal and exclusive 

recognition of the national associations represented and attending; clubs and players were forbidden to 

play simultaneously for different national associations; recognition by the other associations of a player’s 

suspension announced by an association; and the playing of matches according to the Laws of the Game of 

the Football Association Ltd. 

The success of the Olympic Football Tournament intensified FlFA’s wish for its own world championship. 

Questionnaires were sent to the affiliated associations asking whether they agreed to the organisation of a 

tournament and under what conditions. A special committee examined the question, with President Jules 

Rimet being the driving force. He was aided by the untiring Secretary of the French Football Federation, 

Henri Delaunay. 

Moreover, FIFA’s national association was willing to cover all the costs, including the travel and 

accommodation of the participating teams. Any possible profit would be shared, while Uruguay would 

take on the deficit. These arguments were decisive. The FIFA Congress in Barcelona in 1929 assigned 

Uruguay as first host country of the FIFA World Cup. since the other candidates had withdrawn.

Autism is known as a complex developmental disability. Experts believe that Autism 

presents itself during the first three years of a person’s life. The condition is the result 

of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting 

development of the person’s communication and social interaction skills. 

People with autism have issues with non-verbal communication, a wide range of social 

interactions, and activities that include an element of play and/or banter. 

Genomic research is beginning to discover that people with the autism spectrum disorders 

probably share genetic traits with individuals with ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder), 

bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or clinical depression. A team at the Cross Disorders Group of 

the Psychiatric Genomic Consortium suggests that the five mental disorders and illnesses have the 

same common inherited genetic variations. 

What is ASD? 

ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder and can sometimes be referred to as Autistic Spectrum 

Disorder. In this text Autism and ASD mean the same. ASDs are any developmental disabilities 

that have been caused by a brain abnormality. A person with an ASD typically has difficulty with 

social and communication skills. 

A person with ASD will typically also prefer to stick to a set of behaviors and will resist any 

major (and many minor) changes to daily activities. Several relatives and friends of people with 

ASDs have commented that if the person knows a change is coming in advance, and has time to 

prepare for it; the resistance to the change is either gone completely or is much lower.

Autism (or ASD) is a wide-spectrum disorder. This means that no two people with autism will have 

exactly the same symptoms. As well as experiencing varying combinations of symptoms, some 

people will have mild symptoms while others will have severe ones. Below is a list of the most 

commonly found characteristics identified among people with an ASD. 

Social skills 

The way in which a person with an ASD interacts with another individual is quite different compared 

to how the rest of the population behaves. If the symptoms are not severe, the person with ASD may 

seem socially clumsy, sometimes offensive in his/her comments, or out of sync with everyone else. If 

the symptoms are more severe, the person may seem not to be interested in other people at all.

It is common for relatives, friends and people who interact with someone with an ASD to comment 

that the ASD sufferer makes very little eye contact. However, as health care professionals, teachers 

and others are improving their ability to detect signs of autism at an earlier age than before, eye 

contact among people with autism is improving. In many cases, if the symptoms are not severe, the 

person can be taught that eye contact is important for most people and he/she will remember to 

look people in the eye. 

A person with autism may often miss the cues we give each other when we want to catch 

somebody’s attention. The person with ASD might not know that somebody is trying to talk to them. 

They may also be very interested in talking to a particular person or group of people, but does not 

have the same skills as others to become fully involved. To put it more simply, they lack the necessary 

playing and talking skills.

Sidra Jafri claims she helps people ‘wake up ‘in their lives and get away from a 

programmed life that has been installed by parents, religions, institutions and society. This is what 

her workshop ‘The Awakening’ was all about. It took place in the city recently. An author and a 

life coach, Sidra says,’’In the midst of all this programming, we have forgotten who we are and 

what we truly want,which leads to anger,sadness,or illness. Awakening helps us recognise these 

programmes and replace the ones that no longer serve us.’’ Sidra helps people when they are 

going through their spiritual awakening,which can happen while a person is going through a bad 

phase like losing a job or a divorce or loss of a loved one . 

She adds,’Awakening gives them the foundation that what happened to them was not really such 

a bad thing,because now they can find what they truly want. It’s a shift in perspective in life.’’ 

Sidra also helps people realise the patterns in their lives and change them for a better future.She 

teaches people to rise above the idea of good,bad,right or wrong. ‘’Its’s about recognising that 

all of life is an experience,’’she says. According to her, an awakened person will not say that a 

particular incident was ‘really bad’,but would think about the gift in the situation; it is a positive 

approach to life


There are nine principles of awakening,which are her nine foundation pillars in life, that help in 

getting this positive approach. They are: Asking quality questions; Working on your awareness 

is the key; Knowing versus owning, Everything is energy,No judgment, It takes one to see one, 

Nothing is missing and Growth is inevitable. 

These nine principles have a five clocks which are: 

Intention, 

Permission, 

Perseverance, 

Commitment and Faith. 

Sidra adds,’’It ‘s not a healing course,not a therapy session, it’s 

how you live. The more you apply these principles to your life,the

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. 

He preserved the Union dduring the United States’ first Civil War and brought about the emancipation 

of slaves 

In 1844, Abraham Lincoln partnered with William Herndon in the practice of law. Though 

the two had different jurisprudent styles, they developed a close professional and personal 

relationship. Lincoln made a good living in his early years as a lawyer, but found that Springfield 

alone didn’t offer enough work, so to supplement his income, he followed the court as it made its 

rounds on the circuit to the various county seats in Illinois.


Abraham Lincoln (or “Abe” as he was affectionately called) is regarded as one of America’s 

greatest heroes due to both his incredible impact on the nation and his unique appeal. His is a 

remarkable story of the rise from humble beginnings to achieve the highest office in the land; 

then, a sudden and tragic death at a time when his country needed him most to complete the 

great task remaining before the nation. Lincoln’s distinctively human and humane personality 

and historical role as Saviour of the Union and emancipator of the slaves creates a legacy that 

endures. His eloquence of democracy and his insistence that the Union was worth saving embody 

the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve. 

When young Abe was 9 years old his mother Nancy died of tremetol (milk sickness) at age 

34 and the event had a devastating effect on him. He grew more alienated from his father and 

quietly resented the hard work placed on him at an early age. A few months after Nancy’s death, 

his father Thomas married Sarah Bush Johnston, a Kentucky widow with three children of her 

own. She was a strong and affectionate woman with whom Abraham quickly bonded. Though 

both his parents were most likely illiterate, Sarah encouraged Abraham to read. It was while 

growing into manhood that he received his formal education—an estimated total of 18 months—a 

few days or weeks at a time. Reading material was in short supply in the Indiana wilderness. 

Neighbors recalled how Abraham would walk for miles to borrow a book. He undoubtedly read 

the family Bible and probably other popular books at that time such as Robinson Crusoe, Pilgrims 

Progress and Aesop’s Fables. 

He married Mary Todd, and they had four boys, only one of whom lived to maturity. In 1858 

Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator. He lost the election, but in debating with 

Douglas he gained a national reputation that won him the Republican nomination for President in 

1860. 

As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organisation. Further, he 

rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the 

Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. 

Lincoln won re-election in 1864, as Union military triumphs heralded an end to the war. In his 

planning for peace, the President was flexible and generous, encouraging Southerners to lay 

down their arms and join speedily in the reunion 

The spirit that guided him was clearly that of his Second Inaugural Address, now inscribed on one 

wall of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.: “With malice toward none; with charity for all; 

with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we 

are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds.... “ 

On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington by 

John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the South. The opposite was 

the result, for with Lincoln’s death, the possibility of peace with magnanimity died.
