Sharing Creativity Caring for Your Business
share a moment with
SHELLI
The holidays often spark precious
memories for me, and so many of those
memories revolve around family
traditions. We have made a conscious effort to
create family traditions for our children and
grandchildren all year long, but some of our
favourite traditions occur around the holidays.
On Christmas Eve we gather together and enjoy a
smorgasbord of finger foods. Meats and cheeses,
chips and dips, anything you can eat with your
fingers. We put the food out and snack all evening
as we watch Christmas videos, share the Christmas
story, and open one Christmas gift apiece.
Christmas morning dawns bright and early, much earlier than I would
like sometimes! With most of our girls married and starting their own
families, we don’t always have everyone at home. Whoever is home,
however, enjoys a tasty ham and eggs breakfast, and then we always enjoy
a fancy Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.
As we all get older, our family traditions become even more cherished.
The time we spend with our loved ones takes on added meaning, and we
look for other traditions we can create. It’s not always easy—our schedules
are full and many things clamour for attention. But traditions provide an
anchor to our lives and add meaning to everything we do; they are worth
every effort it takes to maintain them!
We are adding a tradition to our Stampin’ Up! holiday celebration this
year. In the past, we have sent you a holiday greeting card, expressing
appreciation and thanks for all you do. While we are, of course,
appreciative of your efforts, we have chosen this year to begin a new
tradition. We’ve taken money used to design, print, and mail those cards
and adopted a child through the Make-A-Wish Foundation ® . We think
this gesture more accurately expresses our shared commitment with you
to make a difference in the world around us.
I hope you don’t miss your annual Stampin’ Up! card and instead feel the
sweet satisfaction that comes from this new tradition. In next month’s
issue of Stampin’ Success ® , you’ll be able to read about the little girl whose
dream came true thanks to our Stampin’ Up! donation. And please
consider this your holiday greeting. Thank you for everything you do!
Thank you for your enthusiasm, support, commitment, and ideas.
Thank you for choosing to be part of our Stampin’ Up! family. I do hope
you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
TECHNIQUE
and
Using small dots to create beautiful images is simple when you stipple.
Sharing what we love comes easily
when there are so many fabulous
ways to use stamps and ink, and
one of the most stunning techniques you
can share to add texture and colour to
any project is stippling.
Stippling uses small dots to create an
image or background with varying
degrees of solidity or shading. The closer
together the dots, the darker or more
solid the colour appears. Historically,
printers have used stippling to shade
line-art illustrations because they can
achieve rich shading and texture using
only black ink. Luckily, you have more
than 50 colours to choose from!
The best way to duplicate this look is,
of course, with a stipple brush (found
on page 225 of the current Idea Book
& Catalogue). Tap the brush on your
Classic or Craft ink pad, and then tap
it straight up and down on your card
stock. Keep tapping until you’ve achieved
the shading you’re after. You may need
to re-ink the end of your stipple brush as
you go. Simple enough!
So, now that you’ve got the hang of
stippling, let’s try it on some projects.
Start with a simple stippled background.
We created the soft, felted texture on our
Wishing You card by stippling Old Olive
ink across the front of our Old Olive
card—a wonderful way to add just the
right warmth to this holiday project. By
beginning with a project that features
stippling all over, you and your customers
will perfect the technique in no time!
Once you’ve introduced your customers
to stippling, show them how quickly
they can create unique accents for their
scrapbook pages using stencils. “This is so
easy,” you might say in your workshop.
“I’ve already used the heart from this On
Board Accents sheet for another project, so
I can use the negative image as a stencil
for my stippling!” The stippled heart (see
figure 1) makes our Love You Forever
page come alive.
The heart isn’t the only stippling on
this page. We stippled Whisper White
ink along the edges to give the project a
weathered look; it’s subtle, yet effective.
Notice that we created a similar
weathered effect on the bottom half of
our On Board Joy book by stippling Old
Olive ink on Old Olive card stock.
While the bottom half of our Joy book
is beautiful, it’s the snowy top half
that catches your eye. Wheel the bold
snowflake image over the Whisper
White card stock in Whisper White or
VersaMark ® ink, and emboss. Remind
your workshop guests that they will need
an uninked jumbo cartridge and either
a Whisper White or VersaMark ink refill
for this look.
Now for the exciting part—the stippling!
This time we combined two of our
favourite techniques, stippling and
resisting, for a wintertime look. Stipple
Brocade Blue ink over your embossed
snowflake images, making sure to get
down into the small spaces between the
embossing. Then wipe the ink from the
snowflakes to create a finished look sure
to impress your workshop guests.
figure 1 figure 2
december 2006
Speaking of impressing your guests, they’ll
definitely adore this next idea. Our vintage
World Tour set images cry out to be
stamped with a technique that will enhance
their classic elegance. Stippling adds the
perfect amount of texture and colour.
“Rather than stippling on card stock, I’m
going to do it right on the stamp,” you can

´
TECHNIQUE
explain. “The texture I’m creating on the
stamp will be transferred to the card stock
when I stamp the image.”
We used this technique plus a spectrum
of colour for our tropical A Happy Hello
card by stippling one colour after another
on the stamp. Start with the lightest
ink colour in your spectrum and move
through the colours one at a time until
you stipple your darkest colour (see
figure 2). Keep your image beautiful by
cleaning your brush with a baby wipe
between colours.
Try stippling on your own, then share
this excellent technique with your friends,
family, downline, and customers. They’ll
love learning how to create something so
beautiful with so little effort.
Wonderful
mini
Catalogue
Each quarter, customers eagerly
anticipate the mini catalogue,
so they can see the exciting new
stamp sets and accessories Stampin’ Up!
has to offer. The 2006–2007 Winter
Mini Catalogue is no exception, and
with stamp sets designed specifically for
winter, Valentine’s Day, spring, and more,
stampers are sure to find something
they love.
For example, the Carte Postale set
includes a variety of images, including
flowers, flourishes, and greetings. The
images in this set can be used alone, but
you can increase your creative options by
using them with the Leaves à la Carte
wheel, the French Flair background
stamp, or the Enchanté double-sided
Designer Series paper. Each of these
different products is designed to
coordinate together, making this
combination of offerings a wonderful
way to create hand-stamped works of
art that look professional and beautiful.
And you’ll also be thrilled to discover
how wonderfully these products work
with accessories found in the Idea
Book & Catalogue!
Showing samples like these to
your customers gives you the
opportunity to upsell different
products. After all, your
customers will be able to create
more if they have more items
that coordinate.
Bonjour card
The Bonjour card shows how well the
patterns in the Enchanté double-sided
Designer Series paper coordinate with
each other. Your customers will find it
easy to mix and match when they have so
many selections to choose from. During
a workshop, you might say, “When
you create with Stampin’ Up! products,
you don’t have to be a colour expert.
Our products are designed to coordinate
together, which takes the guesswork out of
colour selection and saves you an incredible
amount of time!”
Carte Postale card
The curved lines of the flourish and
background image offset the straight
lines of the card stock and ribbon,
making this card elegant and balanced.
Notice how the curves of the Sage
Shadow flourish echo the waves on
the French Flair background stamp.
Demonstrate this card to emphasize how
well our products work together.
Mon Amie card
The Mon Amie card
features a simple
design and shows
one way to use
your paper scraps.
In this case, the
overlapping circles
create an intriguing
focal point, with
one circle in the
middle that stands
out. You might
say, “Our Designer
Series paper works
wonderfully with
our punches.
Punched-out paper
makes an instant
accent! Not only
are the results
interesting and
creative, you’re
also getting a
terrific value by
putting paper
scraps to use.”
Merci card
Customers will fall in love with the
way our new Pocket Notes provide a
simple way to convey their thoughts of
appreciation. All they have to do is add a
layer of Designer Series paper for a quick
background (a handy place to use scraps
of paper), and they have small notes that
they can hand out to those who need
to know someone cares. “You’ll never be
without a card again,” you could tell your
guests, “because when you buy these darling
little Pocket Notes, you’ll always have notes
on hand to share loving thoughts with
important people.”
Mon AmiE page
Patterned paper is a staple in
scrapbooking, but it doesn’t have to be
used only as a background. The Mon
Amie page shows how you can use a
combination of paper as a background
and as elegant accents. When you’re
working with Designer Series paper,
adding coordinating card stock to your
projects provides valuable balance.
share the love
Start Filling Your Sell-A-Bration Calendars Now!
You’ll find a lot to love
about Sell-A-Bration. Our
most enduring and popular
promotion can help you generate sales,
bookings, and recruits. To maximize your
success, schedule bookings for January
and February right now so you can share
the love!
What’s to Love?
Sell-A-Bration is the all-in-one package
for every business. This much-anticipated
promotion offers an incentive for
everyone involved with Stampin’ Up!—
customers receive a free product for
each $75 they spend; hostesses receive a
product for each $450 in workshop sales;
recruits receive a free set in their starter
kit; and you receive free products for your
personal net sales of $900 and higher.
In addition to the chance to earn free
stamp sets, you receive indirect benefits
as well. Workshops during this period
typically have higher totals, which bring
higher instant income and volume
rebates. You’ll also find that Sell-A-Bration
provides an ideal opportunity to connect
with new customers and those you haven’t
seen in a while. Because the promotion
appeals to a broad spectrum of customers
(practically everyone!), Sell-A-Bration can
revitalize your customer base and provide
booking and recruiting opportunities.
With so much to love, it’s no
wonder Sell-A-Bration is so
popular. A full bookings calendar
will help you make the most of
this promotion—now’s the perfect
time to start sharing the love!
Your hostesses will also enjoy indirect
benefits. The higher workshop totals that
benefit you also mean additional hostess
benefits for your hostesses. And the extra
excitement surrounding Sell-A-Bration
means customers are more likely to
attend workshops.
Consider the following valuable ideas to
help you fill your Sell-A-Bration calendar
right now:
Call It Love
Telephone calls are a highly effective way
to contact customers about Sell-A-Bration.
If you aren’t currently setting aside a
portion of time each day or each week
to make phone calls, consider starting
now. Only 15 minutes a day can make a
significant impact on your business.
Start by calling your customers who
received Sell-A-Bration brochures. If
this is the first time they’ve experienced
Sell-A-Bration, explain the promotion to
them. If they’ve enjoyed Sell-A-Bration
before, point out that this year’s offerings
include a Simply Scrappin’ Kit and that
the sets will never be available again!
Also explain the valuable
benefits of being a hostess
during January and
February. You might say,
“Did you get the brochure I
mailed you? Good. I don’t
want you to miss out on any
of the excitement. You and
your friends would have so
much fun at a workshop
during Sell-A-Bration, and
you could earn free sets! I
have an opening on my
calendar for January 12, if
you’re interested, or I’m sure
I could find another date that
works for you.”
You’ll also want to call customers and
hostesses you haven’t heard from in a
while. An opportunity like Sell-A-Bration
can be exactly what they need to get
involved in stamping again.
Fall in Love with a Set
Advertisers know that customers are
more likely to make a purchase after
they’ve seen a product several times.
The same principle holds true for your
customers: the more times they see the
Sell-A-Bration products, the more likely
they are to order. Commit to preordering
Sell-A-Bration products, then making
several samples you can display at your
workshops. The card shown here is a
beautiful sample made from the Delight
in Life Sell-A-Bration set. When you
talk about Sell-A-Bration, point out
your projects so you can add to your
customers’ interest.
Picture Perfect Love
They say a picture is worth a thousand
words, so let the picturesque Sell-A-
Bration brochure do your talking for
12 december 2006

you—but don’t forget to follow up! At
less than $1.00 a piece, the brochure
works as a beautiful, cost-effective
advertisement for your business that’s
easy to share.
Share the love by giving away as
many brochures as you can. If time
permits, deliver them personally to
your customers. Delivering a brochure
provides an opportunity to reconnect in
person. You’ll find a personal invitation is
even more likely to generate a customer’s
interest than simply sending it by mail.
Keep some extras to hand out when you
run into neighbours and friends.
Plan a Love Fest
A Sell-A-Bration open house provides
two golden opportunities: you get
a chance to demonstrate Sell-A-
Bration samples, and you have an ideal
opportunity to call your past, present, and
potential customers. For more ideas on
how to hold an open house, check under
Training > My Workshops & Events >
Other Events Wizard > Ideas & Planning.
Start planning now to hold an open
house at the beginning of January. It’s a
sure-fire way to kick off your year!
Boosting Your Business—and Saving Money Too
making
BUSINESS SENSE
We love new recruits, and we dedicate
ourselves to providing them with
the tools, resources, and training to
accomplish everything they want with
their new businesses. As a new recruit,
if you plan on building your business,
the business supplies you received
in your starter kit are a wonderful
beginning, but eventually you will need
to replenish them.
The Business Booster Kit allows you to
stock up on these critical supplies—at
a discount! So when you order the kit,
which is only available during your first
year as a demonstrator, not only are
you celebrating the fact that business is
booming (or at least that’s what you’re
planning on!), you’re also enjoying a
significant discount on the very
things you need to ensure that your
success continues.
Even if you haven’t depleted your initial
supplies, you may want to consider
ordering the kit simply because it’s such
an incredible value. You can always
use the supplies down the road. At
only $54, you’ll receive all the supplies
in the Business Booster Kit at a 40
percent discount; you couldn’t even buy
the catalogues and brochures alone at
this price!
And this year, for the first time, you
can customize your kit by choosing
your own incentive stamp set and
Inspiration Sheets for your Business
Booster Kit. If you don’t make a choice,
you’ll receive the Small Talk incentive
set and the Fun Filled and Loads of
Love Inspiration Sheets.
If you’re an upline working with a new
recruit, make sure she understands
what a wonderful savings the Business
Booster Kit represents. In fact, you may
even want to set a goal with her to order
the kit by a specific date during her first
year. When she orders the kit, you can
both commemorate the fact that her
business is off to a strong start!
The Business Booster Kit
(item 104562) contains the
following items:
• 2006–2007 Idea Book
& Catalogue (8)
• Seasonal Mini Catalogues
(2 pkgs. of 8)
• Guest Invitation Postcards (100)
• Customer Order Forms (50)
• Inspiration Sheets (2 pads of 25)
• Incentive Stamp Set (1)
A Fast Start
for Your Recruits
Hopefully, you are one of the
thousands of demonstrators
who took advantage of Stampin’
Up!’s Smart Start promotion during
October and November. Now you’ve got
at least one excited new recruit eagerly
anticipating moving forward, and you have
the skills and experience to help her take
her first steps up the ladder of success.
One of the first goals a new recruit should
focus on is promoting to senior associate,
which means she needs $1,500 in sales.
This simple achievement is the beginning
of building a strong business. To help her
become a senior associate, introduce her
to the Stampin’ Start program, a
wonderful program for both you and your
new recruits. (For details on the Stampin’
Start program, see the Demonstrator Web
Site under Training > New Demonstrator
Corner > Getting Started > Stampin’
Start.) This program rewards certain
critical accomplishments as a new recruit
builds her business, and those rewards are
the perfect incentives for both hobbyists
and business builders—free stamp sets!
With powerful incentives already in place,
you can concentrate on coaching and
mentoring your new recruit. By achieving
her first Stampin’ Start sales goal, she will
also achieve her first title promotion—that
of senior associate. If she achieves the entire
Stampin’ Start program and one of her
new recruits promotes to senior associate,
she will attain the title of senior consultant,
which is a solid foundation for any
Stampin’ Up! business. In fact, our research
shows that demonstrators who achieve
Stampin’ Start remain with Stampin’ Up!
longer than those who do not.
step one: Help Her Set Goals
Stampin’ Start provides rewards for
demonstrators who achieve certain sales
and recruiting goals during their first
six months with Stampin’ Up! However,
Stampin’ Start offers your recruit so much
more than free stamp sets. By achieving
Stampin’ Start, your recruit begins to
build a consistent, thriving business from
the outset and is rewarded for her success.
As she achieves goals, she’ll be motivated
to continue nurturing her business.
Your first one-on-one meeting with
your new recruit offers you the perfect
opportunity to explain the benefits of a
successful start and help her set her first
goals. You may want to suggest that she
work toward achieving senior associate
and earning Stampin’ Start.
To accomplish these goals, your new
recruit will need assistance with bookings,
workshops, and selling. Help her break
down her goals so she doesn’t feel
overwhelmed. Instead of telling her
that she’ll get two free stamp sets if she
achieves $2,700 in sales during her first
three months, say something like, “Hold
one $450 workshop your first month, two
$450 workshops your second month, and
three $450 workshops your third month. By
doing this, you’ll achieve your first Stampin’
Start sales goal, receive two free stamp sets,
and promote to senior associate.”
By following a consistent plan, your new
recruit slowly builds momentum. She’ll
build her customer base, hold events at
which she can get bookings, and meet
people with whom she can share the
Stampin’ Up! opportunity.
14 december 2006

step two: Help Her Hold Her
First Workshop
Continue to mentor and encourage your
new recruit even after your first one-onone
with her. Make sure she knows that
if she holds her first workshop with sales
totalling at least $225 during her first
60 days after signing up, she will receive
an extra 10 percent instant income on
that workshop. And if she hosts her own
first workshop, she will also receive the
hostess benefits, which will add to her
stamping supplies. More importantly,
she’ll be holding a workshop with friends
and family who will be her consistent
customers and future hostesses. She’ll get a
jump start on demonstrating and become
more comfortable in front of customers.
Help train your recruit by inviting her
to observe you at one of your workshops.
Have her fill out the Training in the
Workshop Form, which you can find
on the Demonstrator Web Site under
My Business > My Business Resources >
Printing Place under the Upline category.
This will help her listen for key points on
how to get bookings and recruits and
will help her focus on important aspects
of a workshop.
Someone once said, “Give a woman a
fish and you feed her for a day; teach her
to fish and you feed her for a lifetime.”
Resist the urge to design cards, make
flyers, and plan workshops for your new
recruit; rather explain the resources that
are available to help her do these things.
Offer encouragement and training, but
don’t do her job. Avoid setting standards
that are not duplicatable. Your recruit will
look to you as an example, and if she feels
she cannot do the same for her recruits,
she may get discouraged in her efforts.
Direct your new recruit to resources
that will help her prepare for workshops.
Encourage her to copy cards or
scrapbook pages from Stampers’
Showcase, Stampin’ Success, and
Workshop Wizard. These resources
will provide her with demonstrations
that are quick and easy.
step three: Help Her
Get Bookings
Encourage your new recruit to get two
bookings from every workshop. Bookings
often come from booking statements,
so teach your new recruit how to make
effective booking statements. For example,
if a customer says, “I love Stampin’ Up!’s
coordinating colours,” your recruit can
reply, “If you host your own workshop, you
can get a lot of our coordinating products
free.” Help your new recruit take advantage
of booking opportunities and feel
confident in her ability to invite others to
host an event.
step four: Help Her
Boost Sales
Teach your new recruit how to use benefit
statements and upsell products. Show
her the Product Guide and explain how
it can help her boost sales. For example,
point out a benefit statement you might
share, such as, “For clean folds on all of
your projects, Stampin’ Up!’s bone folder is
the tool for you!” Then you could upsell by
saying, “Use our bone folder along with the
Acrylic Graph & Grid for perfect score lines
every time.”
Also encourage your new recruit to
highlight mini catalogue merchandise
and promotions in her workshops to
increase sales by pointing out that most
of these products are available for a
limited time only.
step five: Follow Up
Accountability is your best follow-up
tool. Don’t be afraid to hold your recruit
accountable. If the two of you set goals
together, such as promoting to senior
associate and achieving Stampin’ Start,
then the door is open for you to follow
up and check her progress. If she is not
on track with her goals, ask her how
you can help her achieve them.
Making
the Most of
Chipboard
W
ho would have thought
a package of cardboard
could create such a stir? Our
new On Board collection is fun to use,
and because we offer so many products
to enhance On Board projects, they
provide wonderful upsell opportunities
as well. When you show your guests the
many ways they can use these awesome
products, they will be delighted to try this
incredible new accessory themselves.
You can use these die-cut chipboard pieces,
as well as the negative space left behind, to
add dimension and life to your projects.
Rub the chipboard with a Craft pad to
create a splash of colour—a method that is
faster and less messy than acrylic paint—
and your guests will go wild! The negative
space also makes a valuable stencil since
the material is so sturdy.
Combine the negative space with die-cut
pieces on your projects. You’ll find arrows
and other shapes hiding in the negative
space. Punch out all the pieces and look
for areas you can use on your projects.
For example, our Siera page includes
a cute chipboard arrow and strip from
negative space in Simon Lower. The page
also uses the negative space around the
“R” to create an alluring contrast to the
other letters.
With all these fantastic ideas, you’ll
definitely want to add On Board
projects to your workshop or event
demonstrations. In addition to
demonstrating On Board products, you
can use them on your Make & Take
projects. Remember, when guests use a
product, they’re more likely to buy it.
Show how to use the accents in a variety
of ways, so your guests see uses for all the
pieces and you save on workshop costs.
We’ve provided several projects here for
workshops; we’ve also shown one stamp
camp project. You can find an additional
stamp camp project on the Demonstrator
Web Site under My Business > My
Business Resources > Stampin’ Up!
Publications > Stampin’ Success >
2006 > December.
For instance, your workshop guests can
make a little memory book using an
Accents shape or Simon Lower letter as
the cover. Each guest can make her book
using a different chipboard shape and
letter. Also, tell your guests that the On
Board Accents coordinate with the All
Through the Year set. Have guests use the
same colours, accessories, and stamp sets
to create similar but different projects.
Check out our circle book to see this idea
in action!
After demonstrating a project like this
in a workshop, you could say, “Look at
the ways we have incorporated both the
On Board Simon Lower and Accents on
these projects. Don’t you love how they
work together? You’ll want to make lots of
additional items with your own On
Board accessories!”
If you’re using Simon Lower in an event,
have each guest focus on a different
letter. Try having a themed workshop
(like Noah’s Ark or Baby’s first book),
and think of something for each letter.
For example, combine the “P” with the
penguin image from Wild about You
and “Precious” from Expressive Flexible
Phrases to create a fabulous card or page.
This way, everyone makes a project using
a different letter, and guests see how
many darling projects come from one
package of letters.
Or try something like our For You card.
Give each guest a different letter of the
Make It Happen
Brainstorm a list of ideas for how
to use each piece of On Board,
then share those ideas with your
guests, so they see the versatility
On Board products provide.
phrase and let them use an alphabet set for
the rest of the letters. This sample uses the
letters F, O, R, Y, and U. Show guests how
they can create 10 of the “same” card from
one package of On Board Simon Lower
when they use the letter and the negative
space for each letter.
No matter how you choose to use On
Board products in your events, your
guests will love this versatile accessory,
and they’ll definitely want a set of each
for their own!
More On Board Tips
Find these upsell suggestions on
the samples from this page:
• Cover accents and letters with
Designer Series paper, or use
the negative space to cut out
letters from paper (Siera page).
• Pair Simon Lower with
monogram stamps to get
both uppercase and lowercase
letters (Siera page).
• Mix alphabet sets with the
chipboard (For You card).
• Use Simon Lower with
Amazing to Zany, Everyday
Flexible Phrases, or Expressive
Flexible Phrases sets to get
inspiration for each letter
(circle book).
• Try a background stamp—these
images stand out on chipboard
even when the colour is subtle
(“K” card).
• Simon Lower also includes
French accents, which
work wonderfully for
English and French.
Pop Up Surprise!
Surprises come in all shapes and sizes, so why not in a card? Wow
your guests with a simple V-fold that helps them create their own
pop-up surprise. Demonstrate this wow on a card or interactive
scrapbook page. You can also combine this pop-up fold with a technique,
such as Two-Step Stampin’, like we have on our Pop-Up Birthday card.
Begin with a standard card and
a second piece of coordinating
card stock, which you will use to
line the inside of your card and
create the V-fold (see figure 1).
Fold the lining in half, unfold,
and lay it flat.
Make a pencil mark (point A) on the centre crease 2"″ from the top edge.
Then make two additional marks (points B & C) along the top edge of
your card stock at 1-1/2" on either side of the centre crease.
Fold the lining in half so pencil marks are on the outside, and score a
straight line from point A to point B. Turn over and score another line
from point A to point C. Place the folded lining on the card so that it
opens toward you with the V on your right. Tuck the V inside the lining
by folding it at the centre crease and score lines.
Adhere the lining inside your card so that the V pops up at the top. Stamp
a pop-up image that coordinates with the images on the front of your
card. Cut out and adhere the image to the left side of the V, making sure
it doesn’t show when the card is closed. Open your card and—surprise!—
the image pops up!
