this year for mom pat’s birthday, my
sisters and I gave her a gift card good at one
of her favorite stores. But you know us; we
couldn’t just give her the card! No, we had to doll
it up by creating darling gift card packaging.
And of course, the first thing Mom commented
on was the packaging!
I’ve always felt like giving gifts provides the
perfect opportunity to send an extra-special
message of love by adding a handmade
element. A hand-stamped tag jazzes up a loaf
of bread or jar of homemade jam or anything
you buy in a store. A card that coordinates
with hand-stamped wrapping always makes a
delightful impression as well. And of course,
when you can actually make the gift itself,
that’s even more fun!
This year at convention, my stamping
presentation focused on gift giving, and I had
wlots of ideas, but one of my favorites was the
charm inserts for our new charms. As I worked
on my convention projects, I realized again how
fun and meaningful it is to make and give gifts.
I’ve heard of many people who have a tradition of
giving handmade gifts at Christmas, something
created from the heart! I love that tradition, and
can’t think of a better way to show someone you
care. We’ve got lots of products right now that
are designed to help make gift-giving a creative,
enjoyable, and memorable experience for both
you and the gift recipient.
As we head into the holiday season, I encourage
you to look for opportunities to make your giftgiving
more personal—and fun—this year.
gerri andrade
Escalon, California
wow! art file
Gerri Andrade found her inspiration for this lively box
in Christmas decorations. “My daughter-in-law has a
set of Christmas china and it includes a ribbon box,”
Gerri shares. “I’d seen the box under her tree for a couple of years now,
and I thought, ‘You know, I bet I could make something like that!’” She
could, and she did with fabulous results!
Boxes are Gerri’s favorite type of project to make—and the project
that enticed her to make a purchase at her very first workshop. “The
demonstrator had a box there that she had made. She’d taken a little
poinsettia wheel and gone around the box, and I just thought that was so
pretty!” Gerri says. “So that’s what I purchased at my first workshop: the
wheel, the handle, and the blank boxes.” When she got home that night,
her enthusiasm for stamping was obvious and her husband suggested
she sign up as a demonstrator. We’re glad he did!
holidays on hand
Rose Kerry knows exactly how hard it can be to find your
“stamping mojo” when you’ve been away from it for a
while—but don’t assume that you’ve lost it! Rose, having
set her business and art on hold for a while, was searching for stamping
inspiration and turned to our art contest. “The first card I created only used
one stamp, and I looked at it and said to myself, ‘You nut! If you’re going to
do this, be serious about it,” Rose recalls.
And once she got serious, the mojo started flowing! Rose was an art major
in college, and you can see her education’s influence in her detailed work,
layers of color, and loads of harmonious patterns. “I’ve been stamping
my brains out for the last month trying to get my art back to where it was
before I stopped,” Rose shares. “I kept thinking, ‘Rose, go back to what
you love!’” Well, she’s definitely back to doing and sharing what she
loves—Stampin’ Up!
homemade for the holidays
Karen Giron’s simple style makes everyone feel right at home
there’s something so magical about
the holidays—we can’t help but be inspired
to create! And the art of one creative
demonstrator has certainly inspired us.
Senior associate Karen Giron creates projects
with a clean, beautiful style topped off with
lovely accents that are perfect for the holiday
season—or any season!
Homemade projects are part of Karen’s
family tradition, both during the holidays
and year-round. Karen’s oldest daughter
will often sit down to make cards with
her, working with Karen’s scraps from
her previous projects and retired Simply
Scrappin’® kits that Karen has saved just
for her. “It’s amazing what she whips up!”
Karen exclaims proudly. “She’s always
making little cards and things for her
“I really enjoy giving [cards] to people and seeing
their reaction when you give them something that’s
homemade rather than just bought from a store.”
cousins who live next door. They’re always
making things for each other and leaving
them at the doorstep.”
With cousins next door and grandparents
nearby, the holidays are not only full of
laughter and excitement, they present the
perfect opportunity for Karen to create
something special. “Each year, I make
desktop calendars from 6” x 6” pages for the
grandparents,” Karen shares. “That’s my time
to go a little crazy. It’s so much fun to sit and
go through the photos of my kids from the
year and think about what I want to create
for the calendars.”
But without a doubt, Karen’s favorite projects
are cards. And we’re delighted to share a few
of Karen’s holiday card creations with you. “I
really enjoy giving them to people and seeing
their reaction when you give them something
that’s homemade rather than just bought
from a store,” she says. We couldn’t have said
it better ourselves.
live it artistry
Staying relaxed and creative during the
holidays can certainly be a challenge!
Karen, however, has taken everything in
stride. “Crafting is my way to unwind,” she
shares. ”I usually take some time after the
kids go to bed and I’ll slip into the quiet
[of my craft room] and kind of just create
something. I try to do it a couple of times
a week. Take some time for yourself and
get away from the craziness of the holidays
to focus on not losing yourself in all of it.”
Karen’s Creative Finds
When we saw our new Wandering Words
set, we couldn’t wait to see how Karen would
incorporate the images into her beautiful,
clean designs.
• “My seven-year-old daughter loved the
reindeer stamp, so I knew I had to create
something fun with that image.” The
whimsical designs in this set appeal to
kids—involve them in your holiday stamping.
• The silhouette images are perfect for heat
embossing. “You can emboss with Silver
or Gold Stampin’ Emboss powder for
Christmas or stamp your image with Craft ink
and emboss with Clear for your valentines.”
• Ink these images with Stampin’ Write
markers! “It creates a Two-Step Stampin’®
look, but you don’t have to use two
separate images.”
demonstrators of the year
Honoring our top US and Canadian demonstrators in places 1–5
Achieving a top spot for the Demonstrator of the Year award is no small accomplishment.
We would like to congratulate these women for their hard work, consistency, and diligence.
We’d also like to share some of the things they’ve learned along the way.
#1 US
Demonstrator
of the Year
Dawn Rapsas
Senior manager from West Caldwell, New Jersey
“I believe, that along with great competitive products
in the marketplace, outstanding service for my business
is a nonnegotiable, key component,” Dawn says. “We are
in the business of fun, providing an experience while
establishing individual relationships. These opportunities
are typically not available at big box stores and help set us
apart as demonstrators.”
Dawn also believes making a difference is part of her
responsibility as a demonstrator. “Stampin’ Up! has the
power to change lives all around the world,” she shares.
“As demonstrators, we are ambassadors for that change.
I take this responsibility very seriously. I am constantly
aware of the fact that with Stampin’ Up!, life-changing
opportunities are around me every day. I am fully aware and
tremendously grateful that my life has absolutely changed
because of Stampin’ Up! I recently asked my girls, ‘What do
you think our life would be like without Stampin’ Up!?’ My
9-year-old daughter, Brielle, said, ‘I have no idea, and I never
want to find out!’ My 6-year-old daughter, Danielle, said,
‘Mom, that would be impossible; we are a Stampin’ Upper
Family! Besides Dale (Fillmore) would miss me too much on
the cruises!’ And there you have it, I fully agree!”
#1 can
Demonstrator
of the Year
Lynsay Mahon
Senior counselor from Edmonton, Alberta
This past year, Lynsay has focused on achieving a balanced
business. Not only did this give her more time to work
with her downline, it also earned her the top spot for
Canadian Demonstrator of the Year!
Lynsay cultivates relationships with her customers,
downline, and other demonstrators. “This is the part of
Stampin’ Up! that re-energizes me,” she explains. “My
face-to-face events, both customer- and demonstratororiented,
are definitely a symbiotic relationship!”
Working with people has taught Lynsay that “even in adverse
situations, a kind, thoughtful response goes a long way. I
want my impact on people to be positive, no matter what the
situation, and kindness is the first step in happy relationships.”
In conclusion, Lynsay offers the following advice to new
demonstrators: “Don’t sweat the small stuff. As you get started,
know it’s not about having the best projects, or memorizing all
the products, or starting a blog. Your biggest successes are going
to come from holding workshops. The more workshops you
hold, the more practiced you will become, and in the meantime
you will increase your customer base, meet your future
demonstrators, and book more workshops. The other details
will fall into place in time.”
#2 US
Demonstrator
of the Year
Kimberly Van Diepen
Senior manager from Colorado Springs, Colorado
Customer service and customer relationships are key
to Kimberly’s success. “I strive hard to always keep my
customers happy because without them, I do not have a
business. I try to keep my creative ideas fresh and fun.
I change things up often. When I see something is not
working, I change it to something new. I try to have superb
customer service to keep loyal customers coming back.”
Kimberly has discovered a simple way to increase
bookings. Rather than asking customers if they would
like to host a workshop, she offers to provide a private class
for her and her friends. The hostess can choose from several
themes, such as holiday, birthday, gift giving, etc. Nothing
about the private class is different than a workshop, but by
tailoring the workshop to the hostess and offering several
workshop themes, Kimberly gets more bookings.
The best lesson Kimberly has learned as a demonstrator is
this: “While I strive to meet all my goals throughout the
year, I may fall short, but I can pick myself up and try again.
This makes me a stronger demonstrator. I strive to do my
best every day, and that’s all I can ask of myself.”
#2 can
Demonstrator
of the Year
Nancy Gauthier
Senior Instructor from Quebec, Quebec
Consistency is Nancy’s forte. “Even during the months
when I have lower sales or fewer workshops, I work the
same number of hours each week,” she explains. “I use
the time to provide extra support for my downline and to
prepare in advance for the busy months to come.”
Providing excellent customer service helps Nancy get
bookings. “I like to have personal contact with all of my
customers after each workshop,” she shares. “About a week
after they receive their orders, I contact them to make sure
that everything arrived and is in good condition. I also check
to see if they have any questions about the techniques they
learned. It is often during this phone call that I personally
encourage my customers to become hostesses so they can
share the joy of a workshop with others.”
Nancy’s final piece of advice is this: “Action is the best
solution. You can read all the advice, get familiar with all
the theories, know all the stamping techniques, and listen
to all the conferences in the world, but as long as you don’t
take true action, nothing will happen.”
#3 US
Demonstrator
of the Year
Joann Wiemers
Director from Madison, Alabama
Joann attributes her business success to three things:
“Provide great customer service, mentor those who want
to be in your shoes, and provide positive leadership for
your downline.”
Part of her plan for doing this includes events. Joann
holds two to three workshops and two to three classes
each month.
Not only do these events offer fun for her customers,
they help her train new recruits. “They are my ‘helpers’
as they observe,” she explains, “and I find that often people
recognize that I provide training and that becoming a
demonstrator is like joining my family. The enthusiasm of
new demonstrators is very infectious in a group already
having a great time!”
“Setting a goal and making a plan are the keys to success,”
shares Joann. “But first, you need to know what you want
from your business. Once you identify what you want or
need from your business, the goals and planning have a
focus. Also, you need to share those goals and plans with
someone who will help keep you heading in the right
direction and hold you accountable.”
#3 can
Demonstrator
of the Year
Christy Harsch
Senior mentor from Wetaskiwin, Alberta
Christy feels that her greatest strength as a
demonstrator is her love for Stampin’ Up! products and
her excitement to share them with both her customers
and downline members. That excitement helps Christy
overcome fear.
The best piece of business advice Christy was given came
in her Starter Kit. “It suggested that a great way to get
your business going is to make three phone calls each
day regarding your business,” she explains. “There is
nothing intimidating about three phone calls. Each person
can find the time to do that, and it keeps you consistently
working on your business and sharing the benefits of
Stampin’ Up!”
Christy takes it a step further. “Do a little bit every day. If
you take a break in any area of your business for a couple of
weeks, you can fall behind and start to get stressed out. That
is where the power hour comes in that Belinda Ellsworth
(our guest speaker from convention) talked about.”
In the end, the sweetest part of success for Christy is
that she will be sharing Founder’s Circle with one of her
downline members, Winona Semler.
live it demonstrators of the year
#4 US
Demonstrator
of the Year
Tami White
Senior manager from Marlborough, Massachusetts
Tami has a unique way of running her business that
allows her to maintain high sales, meet new people,
and recruit new demonstrators. In Tami’s early days
with Stampin’ Up!, workshops helped her build a strong
customer base with repeat hostesses. These key factors
enabled Tami to transform her business and experience
exponential business growth.
Today she has over 130 consistent customers who
order from her every month. Most of these attend one
of her hybrid club sessions which, like workshops, are
tailored to keep new customers coming in. Tami encourages
attendees to bring new friends, offering incentives if their
guest joins one of her clubs. By doing this, Tami meets new
people every month.
Tami then uses that as a springboard to invite that hostess to
become a demonstrator. “I love showing people their earning
potential,” Tami explains. Just in one workshop, they can
walk away with a great night’s pay for playing with friends.”
Following the Statement of the Heart, Tami is eager to share
what she loves with others. “I love Stampin’ Up! and the
opportunities it’s brought to our family, and I want to share
that with everyone.”
#4 can
Demonstrator
of the Year
Heather Summers
Senior counselor from London, Ontario
Heather is creative and enthusiastic, and she shares it
by showing her customers new ideas on a regular basis.
“I try my best to make my enthusiasm contagious!
What better time to book a workshop than right now
with Stampin’ Up!’s amazing hostess benefits and the
beautiful Holiday Mini? My customers want in on the
deals and the fun, so they are more likely to book when
I’m excited about something I want to share with them.”
But how does Heather keep her powerful enthusiasm alive?
“There are two things I tell my recruits when they become
demonstrators: have fun and set goals! If Stampin’ Up! ever
seems less exciting and fun and becomes a load to bear,
step back, re-evaluate, and reset your goals. In terms of goal
setting, this is important no matter how big or how small!
Your goal could be to remain active each quarter, to pay off a
certain bill, or to stay at home. Whatever your personal goal
is, write it down and go for it! The best lesson I have learned
as a demonstrator is you can do it! If you set a goal, create a
game plan, and act on it, all your dreams can come true!”
#5 US
Demonstrator
of the Year
Angie Juda
Senior manager from Overland Park, Kansas
Running her business as the Statement of the Heart
suggests has helped Angie achieve success. “I love what
I do! My enthusiasm shows in my words and my actions.
I often put myself in other people’s shoes when making
decisions. I’m also the type of person that loves to give.
I’ve found that helping others brings me incredible joy!”
Sharing what she loves through recruiting is another
one of Angie’s strengths. She offers the following
recruiting tips:
1. Treat potential recruits the way you want to be treated.
2. Respond to their interest as soon as possible.
3. Don’t say too much. Give them the information and then
allow them time to think about it.
4. Accept that a “no” today doesn’t mean a “no” tomorrow.
Know when to back off. Touch base with them the next
time there’s a special.
Finally, Angie advises new demonstrators, “Set goals and then
figure out what you need to do to achieve them. Write them
down; post them in your house; and share them with your
friends, family, and customers (or anyone that will listen).”
#5 can
Demonstrator
of the Year
Caroline LeBel
Senior instructor from Toronto, Ontario
“Becoming a demonstrator has given me a real chance to
step out of my comfort zone and grow as an individual,”
Caroline reflects. “The opportunities that Stampin’ Up!
consistently affords me truly give me a chance to spread
those butterfly wings of mine to soar higher and farther
than I could ever have imagined!”
Caroline’s flair for marketing helps her grow her
business. “I love to find new ways to keep Stampin’ Up!
in the minds of my customers, as well as reach out to
potential stampers,” she explains. “I do that with phone
calls, my stamping blog, e-mail marketing, and fun and
inexpensive advertising ideas. I work consistently on
keeping myself ‘out there,’ so when they think of paper
crafting, they remember to turn to me!”
Caroline offers this final piece of wisdom: “Leave plenty
of time to let yourself stamp for fun! If you get too caught
up in the business side of things and forget why you love
stamping so much, you’ll burn out—and that’s no good
for anyone. Give yourself permission to just go and stamp
something just because!”
make it décor
reveal
your
You may find you’re an interior
decorator in disguise when you use the
masking technique and décor elements
no doubt you’ve used the masking technique in your stamping to reveal your
own artistic style and give your workshop the wow it needs. But what about using
Décor Elements as a mask for your next home décor project? Décor Elements images
make perfect masks because they offer the ideal silhouette for any look—bold, subtle,
or more detailed. Also, these little (or big) wonders are already cut for you and quickly
adhere to your surface. And since many home décor items aren’t flat, you can easily
wrap a Décor Elements piece around your item and still get the mask coverage you’re
looking for.
Let’s discover how masking with Décor Elements can help you reveal your inner
decorator so you can add creative style to any room in your home.
*We’ve listed White as the color for the Décor Elements products, but you can use any
color you’d like because you’ll be using the piece as a mask only.
The Basics
To mask with Décor Elements, you’ll need
• Décor Elements
• Paint, stain, or a spray, such as frosting spray
• A home décor item, such as a piece of pottery, an old cupboard door
you want to turn into a decorative chalkboard, or even a window shadow
box—to name just a few
It’s time to jump into masking with Décor Elements.
Patterned Pottery
To ensure precise placement of the Décor Elements piece on your
pottery’s rounded surface, trim the transfer sheet so the image has a
1/2" border and notch the edges at 1/4" intervals.
On our pottery, we’ve used a dark stain to show more contrast with
the pottery’s surface color. For a more tone-on-tone look, try a stain or
paint that has a less contrasting color than your pottery’s surface color.
2 Adhere the Décor Elements
When applying acrylic paint over your Décor Elements piece, use a
over the piece again. Make sure to take as much time as you need to
get just the right coverage.
share it scrapbooking
simply Marvelous
No time? No inspiration? No problem!
do you have customers
who would like to scrapbook
but don’t, for one reason or
another? While some customers
can’t think of a better way to
pass an evening than creating
scrapbook pages, the mere
thought of scrapbooking
paralyzes others. Some people
think creating awesome pages
will take forever—and that’s
time they just don’t have. Others
think that they’re not creative or
skillful enough, and their pages
will look dreadful. But you know
the truth—anyone can be a
successful scrapbooker or paper
crafter. All you need are the right
tools. And for many people, the
right tool is Simply Scrappin’.
Simply Scrappin’ dismisses
your customers’ scrapbooking
excuses on the spot. No time?
Simply Scrappin’ has selfadhesive
die cuts—no stamping,
cutting, preparation, or clean-up
required. No inspiration or
creativity? Simply Scrappin’ has
coordinating images and colors,
so there’s no need to fret over
what will look good together.
And each package includes
several great layout ideas, so if a
perceived lack of imagination is
a stumbling block, they can copy
one of our layouts. Simply add
photos and the page is done!
The holidays are an excellent
time to suggest Simply Scrappin’
to your customers. Their crafting
time may be limited, but that’s
likely because they’re busy
making memories with family
and friends. And they’ll want
to scrapbook those memories.
Give Simply Scrappin’ kits a
try, then demonstrate them
at your next workshop and
show your customers how easy
scrapbooking can be!
Here are some features and benefits you can point out
as you demonstrate Simply Scrappin’:
• There are nine different kits available in the 2009–2010 Idea
Book & Catalog, so finding the right choice for your layouts
is easy. Need to scrapbook a birthday? A wedding? A baby’s
first year? A teen’s busy life? We have Simply Scrappin’ kits for
all those occasions, and more.
• All products in the kits coordinate with Stampin’ Up!’s exclusive
images and colors, making it easy to combine Simply Scrappin’
elements with other great Stampin’ Up! products.
• Self-adhesive images are terrific alone or combined with
matching stamp sets, giving you plenty of creative options.
• Simply Scrappin’ kits are a terrific value. Each kit contains
plenty of products to create several layouts or projects:
o Eight sheets of 12" x 12" textured card stock
o Six sheets of 12" x 12" patterned paper
o Six sheets of 6" x 12" self-adhesive die cuts
lions may be the most ferocious, dolphins may be the
most intelligent, and monkeys may be the most mischievous,
but bookings need not be the most elusive of all of Earth’s wild
creatures. Although booking workshops will come more naturally
to some demonstrators than to others, anyone can develop the
ability to get new bookings with a bit of effort, dedication, and
sometimes a little friendly persistence.
Brenda Witt, a manager from Cross Lanes, West Virginia, is a
bookings success story herself. She was first introduced to Stampin’
Up! through a relative, her niece who lives in another state. Every
year, around the holidays, Brenda would receive a beautiful,
handcrafted Christmas card from her niece and wanted to find out
how to make such fantastic projects herself. She found out from her
niece that the supplies she used for the cards were from Stampin’
Up!, and that Brenda could find a local demonstrator using the
Demonstrator Finder on the Stampin’ Up! web site. Brenda did a
search and found a demonstrator close by. She went to a workshop,
placed a big order, and within a month had signed up to be a
demonstrator herself.
Does this sound like a bookings success story? Well, it definitely
is! Getting bookings is about generating interest, and that’s what
Brenda’s niece did with her handcrafted Christmas cards. Giving
handcrafted cards for all occasions is a great way to introduce
new people to what you do and what you have to offer. Potential
customers will not only see the fabulous products available through
Stampin’ Up!, but they’ll see your creativity and want to learn all
about stamping especially from you.
As a demonstrator, Brenda now knows the importance of always
staying “bookings-minded,” and she is constantly trying to find
new customers wherever she goes. She involves herself in her
grandchildren’s school through a Volunteer Services program to help
with tutoring, teacher appreciation, holiday decorations, and more.
Whenever she goes to their monthly planning meetings, she brings
along her Stampin’ Up! business bag with some stamping supplies
and a catalog or two.
During the meetings, she’ll pull out a little project that she has
started and work on it. In a recent meeting to plan for Halloween
festivities, one volunteer saw what she was making, asked some
questions, and booked a workshop right away. She also got a
booking with the PTA president by suggesting they make teacher’s
appreciation gifts using Stampin’ Up! supplies. Brenda takes her
business bag to her granddaughters’ soccer games, too, along with a
small folding TV tray. She’ll set up the tray on the sidelines and work
on a stamping project while watching her granddaughters play. This
gives everyone at the game the opportunity to see Stampin’ Up!’s
products in action.
Brenda also says that her Demonstrator Business Web Service
(DBWS) site and monthly newsletter have been useful tools for
getting bookings. Customers find her online, begin placing online
orders, and eventually hold workshops and attend other events. She
advertises occasional incentives through her newsletter such as a
free ink pad or package of card stock for hosting a workshop during
the current month.
Perhaps the most dramatic bookings success that Brenda has
experienced comes from offering additional incentives to
hostesses during their workshops. As a normal part of running a
demonstratorship, many demonstrators accumulate product that
is eventually retired. Brenda found that using the items taking up
space on her shelves as business tools can yield exciting results.
“I take three or four retired stamp sets to each workshop with me,”
she explains. “They could be old Sale-A-Bration sets, old hostess sets,
or even sets that I bought and never used for one reason or another.
I tell the group at my party that in addition to the hostess gifts that
my hostess will be earning tonight, I have another special gift for her
to show my appreciation for her willingness to have us in her home.
Then I offer her the choice of one of the stamp sets that I brought.
They really seem to like that. In fact, I [recently] did it with a group,
and one new customer raised her hand [and asked], ‘Do you mean
all I have to do to get a free stamp set is have a party?’ I told her that
was correct. She said, sign me up! I had a party for her the next week,
and she is so excited about stamping now!”
The workshops hosted by new contacts often have the potential
to turn into classes or regular clubs, depending on the needs
and interests of those attending. Remember that these kinds of
events still have the potential to generate new bookings. Brenda
encourages her club hostesses to bring guests to the clubs so she
still has an opportunity to meet new customers, introduce them to
the Stampin’ Up! experience, and book workshops.
Whichever booking methods you choose to try, remember the most
important thing is to never give up. Through consistent effort and
dedication, every Stampin’ Up! demonstrator can learn to tame the
bookings beast.
printed window sheets add a fun dimension to crafting
projects, and we think you’ll agree that our high-quality printed
window sheets are clearly exceptional. They come in exclusive
Stampin’ Up! designs, some with images sized for card fronts and
some with smaller images that you can use as focal points or easy
embellishments to step up your workshop projects. (You can see
the printed window sheet designs, colors, and sizes on page 169 of
the 2009–2010 Idea Book & Catalog and page 27 of the 2009 Holiday
Mini Catalog.)
Overlays and photo frames are the most obvious use for window
sheets, but if you want to have some real fun, look beyond the
obvious. You can use a window sheet very much like paper—you
can cut it, fold it, stamp on it (with StazOn® ink), run it through
your Big Shot, or punch it. You can even use it to accent a printed
digital piece to create a hybrid project!
Because our windows sheets are thick instead of flimsy, you can
create a clear card that can stand up by itself, like our Cold & Cuddly
card. And the heaviness of the window sheets also makes them
perfect for 3-D projects, such as our Make Merry favor bag. Just cut
the printed window sheet with the Big Shot and Fancy Favor die,
adhere it (Mini Glue Dots® work well), and fill it with goodies.
For a look that’s dazzling, use a printed window sheet as either
the main ingredient for your workshop project or as an accent.
With a variety of designs to choose from, you’re sure to find just
what you need to inspire sales.
Tips for Using Printed Window Sheets
• Our window sheets work beautifully with the Sizzix Big Shot for
Stampin’ Up! and rule-based dies (Originals, Bigz, and Bigz XL).
If the die you use has score lines, add shims to your sandwich to
help define the score lines.
• We recommend using a bone folder to make sharp creases.
• Because window sheets are crystal clear, you’ll be able to see any
adhesives through them. You can layer embellishments over the
adhesives to hide them.
• Rub-Ons and StazOn ink adhere well to window sheets (but don’t
try stamping them with Classic or Craft ink—it will just smear).
• Printed window sheets are acid-free. Keep them out of direct
natural sunlight so they don’t discolor.
extravaganza of holiday cheer
Make gift-giving easy with our 2009 Holiday Extravaganza
often, the most meaningful gift you can give is something
that comes from your heart and is made by your hands—or
encourages the recipient to explore his or her own creativity.
As a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator, giving these sorts of gifts comes
naturally to you. Your customers, however, may need a little help
in this area. That’s why our Holiday Extravaganza campaign and
your Stampin’ Up! workshops are just the thing to get your
customers giving creative gifts this season!
This year, we’ve created an improved gift-giving guide for your
workshops that will help your customers see the holiday gift
possibilities in Stampin’ Up! products—and give them a little
extra guidance when they get ready to make their purchases.
Gift ideas (projects) are divided into eight easy-to-browse
categories to help them find the right gift to meet their needs . . .
and stay within budget!
Three of these eight categories include:
Handcrafted Gifts: Simple albums are sure to become family
favorites. And totaling just over $50 US, your customers can
create meaningful heirlooms for an exceptional price.
Neighbor Gifts: The Big Shot makes simple gifts in a snap! With
the products in this gift bundle, your customers can inexpensively
create about 40 gifts—that enough for all their co-workers!
Gifts for Kids: Help kids personalize their rooms with Décor
Elements. At under $10 US for the artwork, giving a customized
frame, mirror, or other décor item is extremely affordable.
These three categories provide a pretty good idea of what the
gift-giving guide has to offer. But there’s so much more! When
you hold a workshop this season, make sure you print four to six
copies of the gift-giving guide and share it with your customers.
But, in case there was someone who couldn’t make it to the
workshop, we’ll be posting a copy of the gift-giving guide on
the Customer Web Site and your Demonstrator Business Web
Services (DBWS) site.
Let your customers know that you have the solutions to their
gift-giving dilemmas this season with Stampin’ Up!’s Holiday
Extravaganza campaign and 2009 gift-giving guide! Be sure to
check the Demonstrator Web Site regularly for more information
and wonderful holiday ideas to share.
Everyone likes gifts—especially Stampin’ Up! customers!
From November 1, 2009 to January 4, 2010, whenever your
customer spends $50 US/$65 CAN on products featured in
the gift-giving guide, they’ll receive a Décor Elements piece
button, button, who’s got the button? We
do! It’s no secret that fanciful embellishments
are a breeze when you use Stampin’ Up!’s
exclusive and versatile Designer buttons. But
not only do they add charm to your projects,
they can spark interest in other products!
Take, for example, our New Year’s Party
invitation. We inked our word-art image
using our Stampin’ Write markers, and
then we added a festive accent. But instead
of using a plain button—as cute as that
would have been—we added a touch of Fine
Supernova Stampin’ Glitter to the center of
the button. It’s easy!
1 Adhere a Mini Glue Dot to the center of
your button (like we did here) or use a touch
of Tombow® Multi Purpose Adhesive.
2 Pour on a small amount of glitter.
3 Pour the excess glitter back into the container.
Your button now coordinates perfectly
with the “New Year” portion of the image.
Plus, it sparkles! And who doesn’t want a
little celebratory sparkle when the clock
strikes twelve on New Year’s Eve? Upsell
opportunities—like Stampin’ Glitter—are easy
to spot when you create accents using buttons.
By demonstrating this simple project in
a workshop, not only do you show your
customers the versatility of buttons as accents
on both traditional and hybrid projects, you
also give them a terrific reason to buy glitter.
Try this in your next workshop, and it’ll be
finding unique ways to create flowers
is at the top of many crafters’ to-do lists.
Here at Stampin’ Up!, we’re all aflutter over
these deceptively simple ribbon roses. Share
this stunning “wow” technique at your next
workshop—your customers are sure to fall in
love with these beautiful flowers, too.
tip: The trick to these ribbon flowers is
all in the ribbon you choose. You want
a relatively thin width—below 5/8" works
well. Here, we’ve used taffeta. Remember,
for a demonstration, keep your rose small.
How to Make It
1 Adhere five or more pieces (depending on
desired rose size) of Sticky Strip in parallel
lines to card stock to form solid sticky surface,
or adhere a piece from a Sticky Pages sheet.
Remove backing.
2 Begin twisting ribbon, and adhere end to
center of sticky surface.
3 Continue twisting and adhering ribbon to
sticky surface in tight outward spiral.
What You’ll Need
Your choice card stock (approximately 4"x
4"); your choice ribbon (at least 12" to work
with depending on size of rose); Sticky Strip
or Sticky Pages
Turn to page 26 to see one of these
lovely roses used on a project!
4 When you’ve created the size of rose you
desire, cut off any remaining ribbon, leaving
only a small tail. Tuck tail end inside spiral
and make sure it’s securely adhered.
beatthestress!
Don’t stress out this holiday season—kick stress out with our
four guidelines for enjoying the season while staying creative
imagine this:
It’s a few days before Christmas and the
big family party is in a couple of hours.
You’ve stayed up most of the night finishing
handcrafted gifts, cards, and gift wrapping,
but you’ve still got a few final touches to
take care of—not to mention throwing
together a quick green bean casserole,
showering, and wrapping more gifts. That’s
when you realize you’ve forgotten to wash
the holiday blouse you were planning on
wearing! You just don’t know where all the
time went—especially the past few weeks.
It’s not like you procrastinated, and you
can’t help but feel frustrated.
It seems like this happens every year.
There’s so much you want to do because you
love the Christmas season, but you usually
end up biting off more than you can chew
and then . . . disasters. All you wanted was
to make this year’s festivities perfect.
Does just reading this stress you out? If so,
then you can relate. The holiday season is
such a glorious time, and as creative people,
Simple Holiday Stamping Solutions
we love to do out-of-the-box activities and
share one-of-a-kind projects with our family
and friends. But oftentimes, we end up not
enjoying the season because of the stress we
create for ourselves when we attempt to do
everything we want to do to live it up!
If you find yourself buckling under
the stress of the season every year and
wondering what you can do to make this
a more enjoyable, memorable, and warm
time of the year for you, your family, your
friends, and your business, we’ve got some
strategies for you to beat the stress! This
year, you can finally turn things around and
plan for a relatively calm and relaxing but
still fun and creative holiday season!
Plan Ahead
We know—this seems like an obvious
point. Easy to say, but hard to do because
life happens, right? So how do you make
planning ahead work effectively? Think
about it like you would a workshop. When
you’re scheduling a workshop, you wouldn’t
usually just settle on “sometime in three
If time has already eluded you for gearing up for this year’s holidays, but you still want to get
those handcrafted Christmas cards out and put a special touch on your gift-giving, you can.
It’s a matter of keeping things simple.
Take the projects featured in this article as an example. Our Peace on Earth card is a basic
but beautiful and fun holiday greeting that’s easy to put together. Making a large number
of this card to meet the demands of your holiday card list will be less time consuming
and therefore less stressful than creating a more complicated card. Plus, because it uses
our Ornament and 3/4” Circle punches, you can grab some helpers (friends or older
kids especially might love an activity like this) and feel confident that all your Christmas
cards will measure up to your stamping standards (we know you have them). You’ll have
a fabulous time stamping and being creative with others. Incidentally, we think this is
an excellent project for a Christmas card club or for demonstrating at a holiday-themed
workshop. And, if you schedule an event for next year, you can help your customers feel
more in control of their creative holiday season, too!
Likewise, our simple Make Merry gift wrapping and gift tags will give your Christmas gifts a
stylish look without taxing your holiday season sanity. These embellishments are a snap to
put together, and anyone you give these gifts to will not only be utterly taken with their gift,
but won’t be able to help feeling that special Christmas spirit.
weeks,” leave it at that, and then expect
it to come together smoothly. Nope, you
would plan a specific day and time and set
it in stone. Likewise, planning ahead to get
things done in time for the holidays means
reserving a specific time (like from 2:00–
4:00 pm) on a regular basis (every Thursday)
that you can focus on working on whatever
you want to get done. It could be working on
homemade gifts, making Christmas cards,
planning for a holiday-themed stamping
event, or whatever you want to prepare for
and have ready when the season comes.
We suggest that you even schedule your
“planning ahead” time, like you would
workshops, in your day planner or on the
calendar in your kitchen. Make it a priority
and let your family, friends, and customers
know that you are unavailable during that
time. If something that’s a higher priority
comes up, reschedule your planning ahead
time, just like you would any other important
appointment. Start reserving time now for
this or next year’s holidays. Who says you
can’t plan your schedule a year out?
Reserving regular time ensures that you
will make progress and eventually finish
what you want to get done—and that is
what planning ahead is really about.
Keep Things Simple
Are you the type that likes to put a finishing
touch on the finishing touch? Like a smaller
gift or elaborate card to accompany an
already fantastic gift or wrapping job? You’ve
got to scale back, Martha Stewart! (We
love Martha, but she’s got an entire staff of
people helping her out.) Especially if you’re
already feeling like this year’s holidays are
creeping up quickly, determine now what
you do have time to do and focus on that.
Save some of your good ideas for next year.
It’ll give you time to plan ahead effectively
and really work on them without creating all
the stress you’d likely experience trying to
cram it all in this year. And don’t forget how
quickly a year goes by—you’ll be working on
and doing all the other things you want to do
before you know it.
Ask for Help
This can be tough when it comes to crafting
and other holiday projects, especially if
you’re a bit more particular about how you
like things to be done. Sometimes it can
take longer to explain to others how to do
something and to make sure you’re happy
with how they do it than it would if you just
did it all yourself, right? But, it doesn’t have
to be that way. Remember—keep it simple.
The more straightforward something is, the
easier it is to explain to helpers. Plus, you
can always delegate only those tasks you
wouldn’t be as concerned about, such as
running errands, gathering or organizing
supplies, cutting paper or ribbon, punching
out stamped images, etc. You can take the
larger tasks and feel confident that the rest
of it is being well taken care of. You’ll save
yourself some time while also creating an
opportunity to spend some fun holiday
time with family and friends enjoying
festive activities and being creative. Most
importantly, you’ll feel less stressed and
more satisfied with the holiday season.
Decide What You Can and Can’t Do
Sometimes you just need to accept that you
won’t be able to do everything you want to
and still have the time and presence of mind
to enjoy the season—and that’s okay. You’re
only human, after all. (Though we know
when you put on that Stampin’ Up! apron
you can feel very superhero-like.) Let go of
the feeling that you have to do everything,
and learn to say “no” to some things. But
choose to do the things you’ll enjoy the
most and focus your energies there—
then you’ll avoid the disappointment of
missing out on your favorite things while
optimizing your opportunity for a fun and
memorable holiday season.
Our desires to make the holidays magical
for everyone around us are good! The fact
that we get so stressed is just evidence of
how important it is to us to enjoy and make
the most of the season, as well as how much
we care about our loved ones. But when it
gets to the point that stress dominates our
holiday experience and we start feeling the
opposite of what we want—disappointed,
unsatisfied, tired—then it feels like all of
our efforts are pointless. By implementing
the few stress management principles we’ve
talked about in this article, you can learn
how to make the holidays a truly joyful time
in your life once again!
Art by: Christina Nielson
whenever we sit back in awe of a masterfully designed scrapbook page or grin with happiness at
a combination of colors applied with precision, there’s always one question that pops into our heads:
“Where in the world did she get that brilliant idea?” There are so many things that can inspire a card,
a scrapbook page, an adorable box . . . anything you can dream of to make!
This month, we’ll take a look at just a few of the things that are inspiring us right now—and get
some inspirational tips from a couple of our 2009 Artisan Award winners.
clothing
Our artist, Christina, was inspired by not only the roses on this fluttery,
feminine blouse but also by the colors in a simple magazine layout
(not shown). In order to get that extra feminine touch, she created a
background by repeatedly stamping the script image from our Charming
set in shimmer paint. Likewise, Cindy Lawrence finds herself jotting
down clothing colors and patterns she sees people wearing when she’s
out and about. “I also often add photos of clothing or material to my
inspiration book for future reference,” she shares.
Home Décor
“I find that looking around I find ideas
everywhere,” Shelley Bohan explains. “It’s a
matter of perspective and using other ideas
and then putting my touch on them.” Home
décor provides a great source of everyday
inspiration. For example, the colors in these
small bowls and this bolt of fabric (perfect
for covering a pouf or a small vanity chair)
inspired the colors in Christina’s lovely,
modern Friend notecard. What else
could these pieces inspire?
Bolts of Fabric
“Fabrics are a great place to get texture
and color ideas from,” Shanna Jensen says,
drawing on experience from her degree in
textile design. “I love to use pattern and
texture in my layouts.” Fabric can also
provide a wonderful source of inspiration for
layouts. Christina modeled our Patchwork
Dreams card after the summery quilted
pattern in this fabric.
Photos
The birthday gift bag in our photo of Gavin
inspired Christina to create a circular
patterned piece for her page, embellished
with plenty of stars! “This is probably the
simplest and quickest inspiration of all,”
Diana Gibbs says. “I mean the pictures are
right there, and they basically tell you how
and what to use on your page, because
scrapbooking is all about the pictures. I know
[we] die-hard card makers have a hard time
with that.”
Stamp Sets
It’s obvious to see what inspired Christina
to create this Perfect Chemistry page: Our
Perfect Chemistry set and the periodic table!
Stamp sets often inspire pages, cards, and
3-D projects “especially when the stamp sets
are made to create a scene,” Summer Stone
adds. “For example, the Hoppy for You set
prompted me to create a water and lily pad
scene for one of my artisan submissions. The
stamps made it easy to lay out a cozy little
home on the card for my jumpy little frog.”
Take the Challenge: Build Your Board
what makes a great inspiration board? That’s all up to you!
Each of us has our own style and our own way of doing things. The
important part is gathering the pieces and organizing them in ways
that make sense and allow us to think creatively.
Fran Sabad, for example, keeps her inspiration on her computer; one
file for things she finds out-and-about, and one for things
she’s found online. “You will frequently see me in stores, at
people’s home, outside—wherever—snapping pictures of things
that inspire me,” Fran says. “With the advent of camera phones,
I’m in heaven!”
This month, we challenge you to start an inspiration board, binder,
or computer folder this month. No matter how you choose to organize
the things that appeal to you, you’ll love being ready to
kick your imagination into gear!
Tara Bazata | round rock, texas
2009-2010 Advisory Board
In August, Tara Bazata received an excellent surprise—a new
recruit! She’d found Tara through the Demonstrator Locator and was
interested in the $85 Starter Kit promotion. The reason she wanted
to sign up under Tara? Her personalized, up-to-date Demonstrator
Business Web Services (DBWS) site! “Little things make a big
difference,” Tara remarks. “As a demonstrator, you can go onto
someone’s DBWS and know whether or not the site is complete and
personalized. Customers notice these things, too.” Tara recommends
always keeping your calendar updated and personalizing your DBWS
with your own photo. Thanks for the great advice, Tara!
Gather your group and make holiday cards together for your past hostesses.
You can form an assembly line and easily make the card shown on page 24.
Don’t forget the goodies and holiday music! After all, even something as simple
as a handcrafted holiday card can lead to a workshop booking!
This month, our Demonstrators of the Year in places 1–5 shared a few of
the things they’ve learned as demonstrators. What have you learned? The next
time you get together with your downline, take a moment to share your stories.
Reaching your goals is twice as exciting when you share it with a friend—just
ask Christy Harsch and Winona Semler! Before you ring in the new year, make
a point to sit with your downline and talk as a group about your goals. You
could even create a giant chart and track your progress together. (There are
few things better than being surrounded by friends when you realize you’ve
earned the incentive trip.)
