from the foundation Singapore and Hong Kong Reunions In April, the College hosted two reunions in Asia for members of the Aloysian Family living in the region. The dinners in Singapore and Hong Kong were a great success and saw Old Boys, Past Parents, Current Parents and Future Parents join together and share the Aloysian Spirit. Feedback from the two events has been very positive, so much so, that the Dinners will become annual events, with the next Dinners to be held in March or April 2009 (details will be included in the next edition of the Aloysiad). The College would like to especially thank the following Old Boys for hosting the Dinners and being the local organisers for these events. Hugh Darwell (SAC 1978), Anthony Darwell (SAC 1981) and Andrew Cannane (SAC 1990) for organising the Singapore Reunion and Henry Wong (SAC 1983) and Andrew Fox-Smith (SAC 1983) for organising the Hong Kong Reunion. Special mention must go to Steve Rush (SAC 1985) and Greg Tafft (formerly Greg Law) (SAC 1987) who travelled to the Singapore Reunion from Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai respectively. Above and next column: Guests at the Singapore Reunion. 2008 UK/Europe Reunion The Annual Reunion of members of the Aloysian Family living in the United Kingdom and Europe will be held on Saturday 1 November in London. Invitations will be posted and e-mailed to all members of the Aloysian Family living in the Region in August. Anyone who has recently moved to the region who may not have alerted the College to their change of address is encouraged to contact the Foundation to ensure their name is included on the invitation list. The Guest of Honour for the 2008 Reunion will be the Rector of the College, Father Ross Jones SJ. Bursary Fund Tax-deductibility I am pleased to advise that the College Bursary Fund has been granted tax deducibility by the Australian Tax Office. Following a decision by the Howard Government to allow university and school scholarship and bursary funds to be awarded tax-deductible status, the College Bursary Fund has been approved as a tax-deductible entity. All gifts made to the Fund after 1 January 2008 are now eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. 2008 Aloysius’ Annual Fund Thank you to the hundreds of members of the Aloysian Family who supported the 2007 Aloysius’ Annual Fund. Through their active financial support of the College over $365,000 was raised in support of the 2007 St Aloysius’ College A Jesuit School for Boys _ Founded 1879 aloysiad / page 6
Aloysius’ Annual Fund. These gifts were directed to the purchase and installation of fifteen interactive whiteboards (‘smartboards’) and data projectors, the purchase of new educational materials for the College libraries and the provision of means-tested bursaries to boys who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend the College and benefit from an Aloysian education. The success of the ‘smartboard’ trial has been very positive, so much so that the College is keen to see every boy benefit from their use; we have therefore decided to install one in each classroom throughout the College. In order for us to achieve this goal, we need to raise over $400,000 from the 2008 Aloysius’ Annual Fund to make this possible. Donations to the tax-deductible Building Fund will be directed to the purchase of interactive whiteboards and data projectors. With the roll out of the smartboards across the College, we will need to update a number of the computer systems in the College libraries. New computer hardware (computers, servers and monitors), as well as software (computer programmes and applications), will be required not only to maintain the smartboards, but also to ensure that our boys and staff are able to get the most out of this exciting technology. Gifts made to the tax-deductible Library Fund will be directed to the purchase of this additional computer equipment and will also enable the College to purchase additional material for the College libraries. Each year, more and more boys are able to attend the College on means-tested academic bursaries through the generosity of the Aloysian Family. These boys, who through their family’s economic situation would not normally have the opportunity to attend St Aloysius’, now have the opportunity to benefit from an Aloysian education. The presence of these boys enriches the lives and education of all Aloysians. The cultural and socio-economic diversity of St Aloysius’ is something that sets us apart from other schools in Australia. Gifts made to the tax-deductible Bursary Fund will support and expand the College Bursary Programme. Gifts in support of the 2008 Aloysius’ Annual Fund can be made on the form below and returned to the College. Gifts made prior to 30 June will receive a tax-deductible receipt for inclusion in 2007-2008 tax returns. The College is humbled by the active generous support of so many members of the Aloysian Family.
