Come and learn from four very different male nurses – a current student, a recent graduate, an intensive care nurse and a neuroscience nurse. Discover about the wide range of career options you can pursue as part of the nursing profession. Also have a tour of UTS’ state of the art clinical labs and meet their robotic patients. Parents are most welcome too. 16-28 August: Ultimo Science Festival. Some terrific fun events especially to nurture students interest in technology, eg forensics and research. They have courses in business management, event management, sports management, hospitality management, international tourism, retail management and property services management. ICMS will be awarding three National Scholarships, commencing in 2012, valued at over $50,000 each. Application process is simple – log on to teach.nsw website and apply online. Support of up to $28,000 over up to 5 years is available. Closing date for applications is 7 October. AUSGRID (formerly EnergyAustralia) are well known for empowering school-leavers – they offer apprenticeships, cadetships and traineeship opportunities. Students who wish to apply for most scholarships later in 2011 should start preparing their documentation now. Macquarie University in 2012: Bachelor of Information – Games Design & Development – a new course in gaming. This is the only games development degree course offered by a university in NSW. It will be a three-year course, with students undertaking a final year project to practice their knowledge. This will provide them an opportunity to showcase their work to potential employers. The course contains most of the core of the BIT degree together with specialist game units. The ATAR is expected to be around 75.00. Bachelor of Marketing & Media – will combine both theory and practice. In the marketing component, areas covered include marketing fundamentals, statistics, consumer behaviour, marketing strategy, brand management, integrated marketing communication and social marketing and sustainability. The media component covers topics such as media cultures, digital media production, international communications, public relations and media production (eg radio, 12
screenwriting, multimedia). There will also be a media internship component in this degree. ATAR is expected to be in low 90.00s. 31 July, 2.00-4.00pm: Macquarie University’s Robotics Fun Day. It contains information on the rules and requirements, selecting the right courses and HSC Pathways (http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu/au/schoolcertificate/pdf_doc/ studying-hsc-11pdf. Another very useful website is www.uac.edu.au/schoolink/year-10shtml. “Choosing HSC courses: facts and myths” covers the HSC, ATR and pathways to uni, and dispels common myths about subject selection and scaling, and also “A walk through the 2014” Year 10 Booklet, which has been given to all our Year 10 students. EARLY ENTRY OPTIONS Early Entry applications at the University of Wollongong will open on 1 July for students completing HSC this year. This is how our current Year 12 students can earn a place in a Bachelor degree at UOW before they sit the HSC. See www.uow.edu.au/future/earlyentry/index.html. University of Notre Dame Early Offer Scheme: Students can get a conditional offer of a place prior to completing their HSC. The program looks for students with high personal and leadership qualities who have been active in their school, church or community or have applied their talent to sport or the arts. See www.nd.edu.au. MEDICINE University of Tasmania: A five-year degree, B Medicine/B Surgery. Pre-requisite: Pass in Year 12 Chemistry and sound background in Mathematics. UNSW: Their new Undergraduate Program Guide is now available to download and it contains all the information applicants must be aware of when applying. The Medicine Application Form has been available from 2 May. Information is given as to what ATAR and UMAT score is needed to be offered an interview. Although there are no prerequisites for entry to UNSW Medicine they recommend Chemistry (Year 10 students might find this useful as they select HSC subjects shortly.) Applicants who will be offered a main round interview will be contacted late October 2011. Main Round interviews will take place 24 November-1 December. See www.med.unsw.edu.au. Projects Abroad: Operates in 25 countries and enables thousands of volunteers to take the opportunity to make a contribution to a community and foster cultural exchange and understanding. Contact them at www.projects-abroad.com.au. VISITS TO UNIVERSITIES UNSW Campus Tours: Every Friday at 3.30pm. See www.campustours.unsw.edu.au. This one-hour tour gives participants the chance to ask any questions about faculties, student life, etc. Guides are highly trained student ambassadors with a wealth of knowledge about the university. Registration to attend is essential, as group size is limited to 10. The University of Wollongong runs guided campus tours. These are conducted by current students who are very helpful and can give lots of relevant information to prospective students and parents. All details and booking form can be found on the UOW Future Student website or on 1300 367 869. Students wanting more information about courses at UOW, should contact Shannon Archer (4221 532 or sarcher@uow.edu.au. Some out-of-Sydney universities do not hold traditional Open Days. Rather, they are open to visitors every day! Please always phone ahead to book a campus tour and let them know for which courses/degrees you want information, and they can arrange for someone to talk to you and show you around.
