S.A.C.O.B.U ST. ALOYSIUS’ COLLEGE OLD BOYS UNION Old Boys News 1945Ray Evans reports that he has finally retired as a Pharmacist on his third attempt! He plans to spend more time with the three "B’s" – Bridge, Bowls and the Beach! Ray and his wife Joanne live in Paradise Waters, Queensland and have seven children. Their eldest son Paul is the Parish Priest at Kincumber on the Central Coast. ‘Rusty’ Restuccia has been awarded the 2001 Law Society President’s Award at the annual 1954Anthony Pro Bono Awards in November. Rusty is a member of the Downing Centre duty roster and a generous supporter of the Law Society’s Pro Bono Scheme. Over the years Rusty has provided free legal representation to hundreds of people who otherwise would not be able to afford it. A fine example of an Aloysian being a ‘Man for Others’. Biddle is the Managing Partner of Accountancy firm HLB Mann Judd. 1962John some years as the Principal and Senior Lecturer at the Australian Academy of Film and 1964After Television, Tim Carter is now writing full time. His play The Performance was produced in Sydney in 2001 and is now an entrant in the Patrick White Playwrights Award. He is currently preforming as Dr Smith in the Sydney Festival Play The Bold and The Reckless. Tim is also working on the screenplay of Rob Mundle’s book Fatal Storm an account of the disastrous 1998 Sydney – Hobart Yacht Race and his anthology Concepts of Love is now with a publisher. Retter celebrated 30 years in the Australian Army in January this year. He is a Brigadier based 1971Paul in Canberra. Paul’s two sons attend Canberra Grammar and his daughter attends Canberra Girls Grammar. Gray is a partner at Gilbert & Tobin Solicitors. In early 2002 he and his family moved 1974John to Hong Kong to work on a joint venture with Arculli & Associates. John reports that he has made contact with the Jesuit community in Hong Kong. 1975Dr Shane Ingate is the Operations Director for IRIS a consortium of 32 universities in the United States involved in seismology research. Shane is based in Washington, DC. Toby O’Connor is the National Director of Catholic Welfare Australia based in Canberra. The mission of Catholic Welfare Australia is to promote and advance the ministry of Catholic social welfare as part of the core mission of the Church. Toby is regularly quoted in the media and lobbies the Federal and State Governments on behalf of the organisation and the Church. 1980Dr Gerard Sutton is a clinical Lecturer at the Sydney Eye Hospital; he was also the Chief Ophthalmologist for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and is the Medical Director of the Save Sight Institute. Lupo Guerrera writes that after living in Perth for the past five years he has been transferred to London with his wife Krishten and three children Dominic, Therese and Sebastian. Lupo works for Woodside Petroleum, but is on secondment to BHP Billiton. He is the Principal Reservoir Engineer charged with developing a natural gas field in Algeria. Work will take him to the Sahara once or twice a month, but Lupo laments his wife will probably visit Harrod’s more often! Lindsay is working for UBS Warburg in Singapore. 1982Derek Aprile and his wife Ranee are living in Dallas, Texas. Reno is the CEO of a computer 1983Reno company, AP Walsh and Company Systems Architects. Reno and Ranee have a son, Reno Ian who is two and a half. Peter Carne is an area manager for Peerlees Emulsion, a chemical company based in Sydney. Paul Hope is married and living in Melbourne. Paul and his wife Louise have two children, Vanessa (4) and Marcus (2). Paul is an architect working for a Melbourne firm called Young Architects. He is currently working on the Early Years Centre at our brother School, Xavier College in Kew. Pierre Plazas is the Executive Director of Global Operations with Goldman Sachs in Sydney. Hairs left the College at the end of Year 10 in 1983 when his family returned to the UK. He 1985David recently made contact with the College after surfing into the College site on the Internet. Since leaving school David has worked for Legal & General Insurance. He is currently managing an IT Test Team for the company. David and his fiancée Rachel are due to marry in June this year. After the wedding David and Rachel are moving to Cardiff where they will continue to work for Legal & General and have the opportunity to spend some time indulging in their passion, paragliding. David is planning on attending the Class of 1985, 20 Year reunion in 2005. Coffey is a Director at Pacific Road Corporate Finance. He is involved in acquisition 1986Michael and divestment advice, privatisations, assessment of company values and investor returns, assessment of business strategies and management, and project assessment. Transactions he has been associated with include the privatisation of the South Australian electricity industry, sale of an electricity generation development package, restructuring of the NSW rail and electricity sectors, takeovers, forestry acquisitions and leveraged buy-outs. Michael holds a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University, is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and an Associate of the Securities Institute of Australia. Richard Lawson has left the teaching profession and is now studying Graduate Law. Richard’s most recent teaching position was at PLC Croydon. Draheim is a Major in the Australian Army. He has just completed his Masters of 1987Anthony Management. Anthony Anzellotti is working for the family company Anzellotti Constructions. Over the Christmas Holidays the company, under contract to North Sydney Council, laid new footpaths around the College. Brendan O’Loughlin has been appointed to the College Council. He joins two other Old Boys on the governing body of the College, Jock Murray (SAC 1966) and John Churchill (SAC 1971). Bland lives in Orange NSW, working as an Exploration Manager at the Cadia Gold Mine 1988Mitchell owned by Newcrest Mining. Mitchell and his wife Cassandra are proud parents to their recently born daughter Amelia. In his spare time Mitchell renovates their house and has completed a Masters in Economic Geology. He also manages to undertake an annual short voyage with his father, Tony Bland (SAC 1957) on the family yacht. Tom Fletcher is working as an architect in New York for Robert AM Stern Architects. The company has a staff of 140 and employs architects, landscape architects and interior designers to offer a total design service. John Cunningham has recently returned from his third tour of duty with the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps to East Timor. John has taken up a position as Senior Resident Medical Officer in Orthopaedics at the Royal North Shore Hospital. John plans on continuing his involvement with the Army Reserve. Sean Johnson graduated from Sydney University with a Master of International Studies and began working as a Policy Advisor to Barry O'Farrell MP, Deputy Leader of the NSW Opposition, in 1996. Since 34
March 2001 Sean has been working in London for Gary Sturgess, former chief Policy Advisor to Hon Nick Greiner (SAC 1963), at Serco Plc. O'Grady is enjoying success as a solicitor with Carney's, where he has worked since 1998. 1989Peter He was made an associate in 2001. Peter graduated with a Law degree from Macquarie University. Tom Switzer is the editor of The Australian's Opinion page. Tom has worked in the print media since he graduated in Arts from The University of Sydney, enjoying time with The Washington Post and The Financial Review. Tom will marry his fiancée, Sarah Stock, in March 2002. Rod O'Connor married Fiona Forsyth on December 1st, 2001 at Watson's Bay. Sam Biddle is a sales manager for Southcorp Wines based in Sydney. Eagleton tells us he is working in North Sydney as an IT Consultant for Sun Microsystems 1990James and is living on the ‘dark side’ of the Bridge (his words not ours!) at Bondi. James has just retuned home after working in Madrid, Spain for a number of years. Matt Boyle has been living in Tokyo for close to 5 years. He joined Platts in February 2001, and is currently the Assistant Managing Editor of Platts Metals Division in Asia. Platts is a real-time commodities market news organisation, part of the McGraw-Hill group of companies. After an unusually extended engagement of close to 2.5 years(!), Matt and his fiancé Takako plan on getting married in October this year in both Sydney and Tokyo. James Restuccia is a civil engineer working in Dublin. He has recently announced his engagement to Marian Traynor. The date of the wedding is yet to be set, but is likely to be in early 2003. Gleeson has joined his father’s company, Associated Planners, a financial planning company. 1991Marc previously worked for James Hardie Industries. Toby Biddle is enjoying working as a solicitor with the firm Deacons in Sydney. Deady completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy at the University of 1992Luke Sydney in 1996. He then gained admission to the Graduate Medical Programme at the University of Sydney in 1997 (in its pioneer year). Luke graduated as Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney in 2000. He will be a Resident at Westmead Hospital in 2002. Justin Restuccia has completed his Master of Laws and is working for a legal firm in Leichhardt. Gleeson has been selected in the Irish Rugby Squad, which provides players for the Senior and A 1993Keith Side in the current Six Nations Competition. Keith played in the Australia Under 21 side for two years side prior to joining the NSW Team. In July 2001 Keith left Australia and accepted an IRFU contract to play professional rugby in Ireland. Keith is playing for the Irish Provincial side, Leinster (Dublin). Keith was born in Ireland and hopes to play for the ‘Greens’ when they play Australia at Lansdowne Road on 9 November this year. We are thrilled to report that Keith scored a try in his first touch of the ball in Ireland’s recent game versus Wales. Keith’s try contributed to Irelands’ emphatic win 54 to 10 over the ‘Reds’. Travis Toemoe is a solicitor working with Astridge & Murray in Sydney. Ed Zelma is playing First Grade cricket for Gordon. In a recent game versus Sydney University Ed collected three wickets for 26 runs and contributed 44 runs to Gordon’s innings. 1994Jim Scollon is the Programme Manager for META Group based in Sydney. META Group is an American company which provides guidance for IT and business transformation. Anh Do is working as a comedian. He recently appeared on Channel Nines’ coverage of the Fight For Life, a series of boxing matches between Rugby League and AFL players. Dr Anthony Kidman (SAC 1955) also featured on the programme. 1996Rob Haertsch has graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon as a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. In 2001 Rob was the President of the Mess Committee at Duntroon and he was awarded the Engineering Prize for his studies. Chris Crea, John McGirr, Anthony Martin and David Cook were recently featured in a four-part newspaper article in the Steamboat Pilot in Colorado, USA. All four have completed their University studies and are taking time off before entering the workforce. They are travelling around the world and are currently working at the Steamboat Ski Resort in Colorado. They plan to travel to New York, Mexico and Europe before returning home. The article highlights one main complaint the lads have – there does not seem to be many women at the resort! Biddle is studying Pharmacy at The University of Sydney. 1998Joseph David Restuccia is doing an honours year in Medical Science and is working on research at Westmead Hospital. 2001Ben Frost has joined the Ryde Branch of the State Emergency Service and was involved in fighting Births the recent Sydney bushfires. Mark Crooks (SAC 1985) and his wife Penny had a son, Harrison William, born at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital on 13 December 2001, a brother to Madeleine. David Kissane (SAC 1985) and his wife Louise had their second child Rory on 6 January 2002, a sister to Kirra. Andrew Slattery (SAC 1985) and his wife Tina had their third child, Matthew on 27 December 2001, a brother to Joshua and Angela. John McFadden (SAC 1986) and his wife Belinda had their second son John Joseph ( Jack) on 27 December 2001, a brother to James. Past Staff News Rev Fr Tom O’Donovan SJ celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his ordination on 3 January 2002. Rev Fr O’Donovan was the headmaster of the College 1968 – 1973 and is currently based at St Mary’s North Sydney. In December 2001 Rev Fr O’Donovan retired from the position of Director of the Australian Jesuit Mission Office, a position he held for the previous 12 years. Marriages in the College Chapel Travis Toemoe (SAC 1993) married Heidi Penkola on 6 October 2001. The Officers and Cadets of St Aloysius’ College Cadet Unit would like to thank Mr Roger Ellis, father of Timothy (Year 11) and Robert (Year 10) for his kind purchase of six new UHF radios for the Unit. These new radios will ensure the Unit has full radio coverage for all activities.
