Father & Son Mass, Sunday 24 February 2002 Lenten fortitude was certainly tested with the inclement weather that greeted those fathers, sons and grandfathers who attended the Annual Old Boys’ Mass and Barbeque at the College Oval in record numbers. Fortunately the Pavilion was able to provide a covered venue for the celebrants Reverend Fathers Anthony Smith SJ, Geoff Schneider SJ and Michael Head SJ. It was a tight fit with many gathered outside under the pergola. Music was provided by the legendary "College Fathers Choir" led by Mr Bill Clarke. Attendees at the Father & Son Mass Captain of the College Simon Aldridge (Year 12) and Eugene Macey (Year 11) were readers. Prayers of the faithful were led by Phillip Emanuel (Year 12), Greg Egan (Year 11) and Adam Pasfield (Year 6). As the mass concluded the sky cleared with brilliant sunshine. Then followed the traditional barbecue and refreshments under the organisational baton of Kevin Emanuel (SAC 1967) and his team of Old Boys. Many of the current students then took to the Oval to expend their energy. Tony Cook (Past Parent) of Clarence Street Cyclery again generously donated a mountain bike for the traditional raffle, which was won by Domenico Gaudioso (Year 9). All proceeds of the day go to the College's Co-Curricular Committee. Mr Bernie Egan (SAC 1967) President Old Boys Mass AMass will be celebrated in the College Chapel on the first Friday of every month (during the School Term only) commencing at 5.30 pm. The Mass will offered for the intentions of all Old Boys and members of the College family (parents, past parents and friends of the school), especially for those who are ill, have passed away or have troubles in their lives. All Old Boys are encouraged to attend this act of devotion. For those Old Boys who have not been to the College for some time, tours of the buildings can be arranged after the Mass. If you would like an Old Boy or member of the College family remembered at the Mass or would like to arrange a tour of the College, please contact Murray Happ (SAC 1985) in the College Development Office on 02 9922 1177. Cricket – Old Boys versus the College We arrived at the College Oval for our first trial of the new season. It was a fine day and the wicket was ready for play. The game was against the Old Aloysian Cricket Club (OACC) team. They could only field 9 players so Michael Borovicka (Year 11), Aidan Lynch (Year 12) and Peter Restuccia (Year 12) played for their side. It was to be a 40 overs match. The OACC opened the batting and the opening partnership of 42 in 8 overs was a good start. But this was their first game (ours too) and soon they were 3 (for) 86 off 20 overs. This meant that they were going to struggle getting near 200. Scott Butcher (Year 12) had got two of the wickets and Sebastian Robertson (Year 12) got the other one. Dave Coburn (Year 12), our Captain, had bowled four overs for twelve runs and Andrew Hurley (Year 11) did the same. 32
But their best bat was still there. When Mark O’Reilly (Year 10) got him seven overs later, the OACC were 5 (for) 138 off 27 overs. Their best bat had got 79 runs including 13 4’s and two 6’s. Now Paul O’Byrne (Year 11) came on to bowl with Chris McKenzie (Year 12). Paul was able to get four wickets for 15 runs off 5 overs. It was excellent bowling. We had them at 9 (for) 143 off 31 overs. Dave Coburn came back on and Henry Durant (Year 12) bowled from the other end. At any time their seven overs would have been excellent but for the last seven overs of the match they became exceptional. Dave got 1 (for) 7 off his last 4 overs and off Henry’s 3 overs they could not hit a single run. So OACC finished up with 169 off there 40 overs. Some great wicket keeping by Peter Fitzgerald (Year 12) and the catch that mattered taken by Scott to get rid of their top scorer were golden moments. The ground fielding was excellent and the "talk" was just right. Ed Nethery (Year 12) had bowled well and fielded well. Dave had captained the team well and got the best out of his team. Tom Borger (Year 11) had made the square-leg position his own with some fine backing up. It was not a big score but we still had to get the runs. Peter and Tom opened our innings with Peter facing. Their opening partnership of 36 in 7 overs set the tone. It was made up of six fours and some well-run "twos". As always happens in these matches we lost two quick wickets to be 3 (for) 43 after 10 overs. The ball was keeping really low at one end. Peter Fitzgerald (Year 12) and Ian Skinner (Year 10) now started the biggest partnership of the game. Over 19 overs they hit up 137 runs. The right hand batting of Peter and the left hand stroke play of Ian made life very hard for the Old Boys. Peter scored another 15 fours (18 in all) and Ian hit up 8 fours. They rotated the strike well with 21 singles and two threes. After 29 overs we were 3 (for) 170 and had won our first game of the season.Peter finished 97 n.o. and won the Man-of-The-Match award. Tully 13 (3 Fours); S. Ford 20 (one six, two fours). Top batting partnership: 47 runs with Callabra getting 31 and Ford getting 16. Bowling: Vanderuran 6 overs; 1 maiden; 1 wicket; 27 runs; Fox-Smith 6 overs; 0 maidens; 2 wickets; 25 runs; and Willtsee 4 overs; 0 maidens; 0 wickets; 18 runs. Anyone interested in playing for the Old Boys Cricket Club is asked to call John Tully (SAC 1983) on 8923 0600 w. The OACC is one of the oldest cricket clubs in the Sydney Suburban competition and is always keen to sign up new players. CLASS OF 1982 The Class of 1982 (and Year 10, 1980) will be celebrating their 20 Year Reunion on Saturday, 15 June in the Private Function Room at the Union Hotel, Pacific Highway, North Sydney commencing at 7.30 pm. The cost for the Reunion is yet to be finalised, but likely to be around $50 per head. Class of 1987, Fifteen Year Reunion The Class of 1987 will be holding their 15 Year Reunion on Saturday the 26 of October. All Class members are asked to make a note of the date now.
