appeals for renewed
support for the Missions
on the occasion of the
Golden Jubilee of his
Ordination.

members of the Aloysius
family from his time as

Headmaster of the
College 1968 - 1973.
Rev Fr O'Donovan had a long career as teacher and guide
in Jesuit Schools. It is perhaps outside the classroom in
his pastoral relationships with the boys that Rev Fr
O'Donovan had the greatest impact on their development
and growth as Christian gentlemen. Through his recent
work supporting Jesuit Missionaries overseas Rev Fr
O'Donovan has helped thousands of families to improve
their lives, especially through mission schools and health
clinics.
Rev Fr O'Donovan was born in 1921 in Victoria. He
was educated by the Jesuits at St Patrick’s College, East
Melbourne and entered the Jesuit Novitiate in 1938. He
was ordained on January 3, 1952 and spent most of the
next 38 years as a teacher, boarding master and
headmaster.
Rev Fr O'Donovan has a special gift with people of
all ages. His personal integrity, warmth and genuine
interest in the lives of people endear him to all who know
him. Rev Fr O'Donovan says that he loved working in
Jesuit schools and expected to end his days as a teacher.
But when at the age of 68 years he was asked to step into
the job of Mission Promoter he accepted the challenge
with his characteristic enthusiasm and generosity.
Last year Rev Fr O'Donovan celebrated his 80th
birthday and after 12 years he finished as Mission
Director. But he continues to work in the Mission Office
and he continues a very busy round of pastoral duties
around his home at St Mary's North Sydney. Rev Fr
O'Donovan has stayed in touch with thousands of Old
Boys and their parents and has continued to care for
them as Priest and friend. He says that at this time of his
Golden Jubilee he thanks God for the friendship and
support of the Old Boys and families he came to know
through his work in Jesuit schools.
With the passing of the years the Mission mailing list
of supporters has fallen by about 30%. Rev Fr
O'Donovan SJ says that the best Jubilee gift he could
possibly receive would be renewed interest in the
wonderful work that Australian Jesuit Missionaries are
doing among the poorest of the poor in India. He says
that increased support is needed more than ever now that
the Australian Jesuits are also supporting young Jesuit
Missions in Cambodia, Burma and East Timor.
According to Rev Fr O'Donovan SJ" … the time has
come for a new generation of Jesuit friends to take up the
challenge of supporting our work in the developing
world."
