From the Registrar It was lovely to see so many new boys’ smiling faces commencing at the College this year. Even after the orientation sessions, there is still a lot of anxiety as the new year begins, both for the students and their parents. New travel arrangements for the new boys seem to be working out and they all seem to be settling into their studies and new routines. the College does not participate in the ACER scholarship examination. Finally, we need to keep family records up to date, both for the welfare of the boys, and also to keep you informed of what’s happening at the College. If you wish to update any of your family details eg address, telephone numbers etc, please either ring me on (02) 9955 8872 or email me: registrar@staloysius.nsw.edu.au and I will update your details in the College database. Mrs Anne-Maree McCarthy Registrar On 3 March we held our annual Open Day. Many new families interested in sending their sons to the College came to see the various activities and demonstrations. There were sporting activities, art and craft displays, library displays, drama and music performances, cadet displays, science demonstrations and language laboratory demonstrations. There were also debating and public speaking demonstrations as well as opportunities to visit the mathematics, computer, music and sports facilities. A Headmaster’s forum was held both in the Junior and Senior Schools. The prefects assisted the Parents & Friends by conducting tours of the College. Many other students, who had kindly volunteered their time, also gave up their Sunday to help out with Open Day by participating in the various activities. This year is a very busy one, as the College has changed its Enrolment Policy and is now conducting entrance exams for Years 5-11 two years prior to entry. Therefore, as we have a ‘catch up’ year to do, this year we are conducting entrance exams both for 2003 (Years 3-11 held in March and April) and 2004 (Years 5-11 in April). This is nearly double the usual number of applicants sitting entrance exams. We have had to run these exams over several weeks this year, due to the increased number of applicants. We will endeavour to do all interviews to those offered one in May, with offers of places going out to families in June. You will be notified either way if successful or unsuccessful in gaining a place for next year or 2004. Next year, we will run the exams for Years 5-11 two years ahead of entry from then on. Bursary examinations take place on Saturday 5 May for students wishing to apply for an Academic Means Tested Bursary entering Years 7 and 11 in 2003. Parents & Friends Parents and Friends Association As with every other year the beginning of 2002 has been busy for the Parents and Friends. We take the opportunity at the end of the first week of school, after the Junior School Commencement Mass, to host a morning tea for the new parents. Thanks to the many "old parents" who came along to welcome the new members of our Aloysian Family. On Friday February 9, we held our Commencement Cocktail Party. More than eight hundred parents and staff made this a truly wonderful evening. As always the food, brought by all to share, was a magnificent feast. Our evening was made even more special by our wandering minstrels SAC the Choir (a band of keen fathers) who entertained us with their extensive repertoire. Our class functions are already underway with the Year 12 Mass and Supper held on Sunday 12 February and the Years 3 and 4 and Year 5 dinners in the planning stages. On the first Monday of each month we hold our P&F Meeting at the College Oval. Here we plan our functions and parents are given the opportunity to express any minor concerns they may have. We start and finish the meeting over a cup of tea and a chat, and this is also a great way to meet other parents. Toddlers are very welcome to join their parents at the meeting! One of our mothers, Judy Emanuel, has started a fortnightly "Craft Group" at the oval on Mondays or Wednesdays alternating in a four-week rotation. The first day was an extremely wet and miserable Wednesday however a dozen or so women braved the inclement weather and enjoyed a chat whilst they worked on whatever they had chosen to bring. This promises to be yet another way of "friendraising" – something that Aloysians do so well. Past parents are most welcome as are little children. The 2002 Committee’s aim is to get people together in different casual situations and to this end we are working on get-togethers of many and varied natures starting with cooking tours of Sydney, possibly in May. On Thursday 10 May at the College Oval will be our Mother’s Lunch – an opportunity to celebrate Mothers Day a few days early with your Mother and friends Our annual Card Day will be held at the Oval again on Thursday 13 June, so card players put that date in your diary now. A very happy group attended and it was a perfect night on the roof of the College looking onto the sparkling lights around the harbour and our beautiful city. If any Parents from the Class of 2000 would like to join POPS, please complete the reply slip below and send it to me, care of the College. For any inquires I am available on 4975 4376 after 6pm.
