GET HERE 

By Rail 

East Coast, Grand Central and 

First Transpennine Express run 

services from all parts of the 

country to York, Leeds and 

Darlington where connections 

can be made to stations within 

the area including Filey, Malton, 

Northallerton, Scarborough 

and Thirsk. 

The Esk Valley Railway between 

Middlesbrough and Whitby and 

the Yorkshire Wolds Coast Line 

between Hull and Scarborough 

also stop at several local stations 

in the area.

The nearest airports are Leeds 

Bradford, Robin Hood Doncaster 

Sheffield, Durham Tees Valley and 

Newcastle. Train and bus 

The area can be easily reached 

on the national road network. The 

A1 passes through the western 

side of the area and is connected 

to the east and the coast via the 

A64 at York and the A170 at 

Thirsk. The A19 runs north to 

south through the area, parallel to 

the A1, and passes through York, 

Thirsk and close to Northallerton. 

On the eastern side of the area 

the newly upgraded A165 follows 

the coast from Hull to 

Scarborough, while north of 

Scarborough the A171 travels up 

through Whitby, going on to 

Middlesbrough, and joining up to 

the motorway network to the 

north.

Wolds Way National Trails 

(www.nationaltrail.co.uk) and 

hundreds of miles of footpaths 

this is great walking country, 

whether you fancy a short stroll 

or an all day hike. 

If you prefer two wheels, the 

Moor to Sea Cycle route 

(www.moortoseacycle.net) links 

over 80 miles of forest tracks, 

quiet country lanes and the old 

coast railway. Or for the more 

adventurous, try the graded 

mountain bike routes at Dalby 

Forest ranging from peaceful 

trails to challenging climbs.

With a cracking coastline, your 

adventure doesn’t have to be on 

dry land: surf boards to sail boats, 

speed boats to slow boats - you’ll 

find plenty to choose from. 

For something a bit different, 

take to the trees on one of two 

high wire courses or ride the 

thermals with Yorkshire Gliding 

Club. You’ll also find riding 

centres, a racecourse and no 

fewer than ten scenic golf 

courses.

Dotted with pretty villages and 

historic buildings, the North York 

Moors National Park is home to 

England’s largest expanse of 

heather moorland. Ancient 

woodland and rugged coastline 

are also yours to explore in an 

area with miles and miles of 

breathtaking natural beauty that 

is a haven for all sorts of wildlife. 

It is hard to travel far in the North 

York Moors without coming 

across some sign of previous 

inhabitants - archaeology is in 

abundance and the area has a 

strong religious past with ruined 

abbeys at Whitby, Byland and 

Rievaulx and many ancient 

churches.

HERITAGE 

At every rise and fall of the 

landscape you’ll find signs of 

times past from the ruins of 

abbeys and castles to historic 

houses such as Kiplin Hall and 

Sutton Park Stately Home. 

You could easily spend a day 

exploring the magnificent Castle 

Howard, familiar to many as the 

location for Brideshead Revisited. 

Within the house you’ll find 

changing exhibitions and worldfamous 

collections of paintings, 

furniture and bronzes while its 

extensive parkland is home to 

formal gardens, a children’s play 

area and arboretum. 

Located in a peaceful wooded 

valley, Rievaulx Abbey is one of 

the most complete and 

atmospheric of England’s abbey 

ruins and before its dissolution, 

was one of the country’s 

wealthiest monasteries. 

Interactive exhibitions chart its 

long history and influence on the 

surrounding area.

For a quirky slice of rural life visit 

Ryedale Folk Museum with its 

collection of intriguing historical 

buildings which include a witches 

hovel and an Elizabethan manor 

house. Or why not head to 

Kilburn to find out about the rags 

to riches tale of legendary 

furniture maker Robert Thompson 

at the Mouseman Visitor Centre.

dinosaurs as the striking rocks 

along this coast are rich with 

fossils from the Jurassic period.

DIVERSE COUNTRYSIDE 

The diversity of the North 

Yorkshire landscape and habitat 

across the region provides an 

abundant variety of flora and 

fauna. From the rolling dales, the 

coniferous forests, deciduous 

woodlands and seashore to the 

chalk Wolds and sandstone 

outcrops.

The flora and fauna has inspired 

local artists and craftsmen and 

has been captured in their unique

In other areas natural landscapes 

have been transformed to create 

more formal settings for lavender 

farms, walled gardens and farm 

and country parks. 

In Scarborough, a medieval castle 

perched on a prominent cliff top 

divides the town’s two sheltered 

bays of golden sand and a lively 

year-round programme of 

festivals complements the 

comedies and plays on offer at 

the Stephen Joseph Theatre. 

Tuck into delicious fish and chips 

while discovering Whitby’s 

connection to Bram Stoker’s 

Dracula and sea-faring 

adventurers - Captain Cook set 

sail from here! The magnificent 

Whitby Abbey is a must see too, 

with breathtaking views along the 

coast, while for family fun, Filey is 

hard to beat with five miles of 

sandy beach, rock pools and 

sheltered waters.

Whitby taking in secluded valleys, 

rolling moorland and picturesque

Shop Local 

Around every corner you can 

sample locally grown and 

produced food at delicatessens, 

cafés, pubs and restaurants. By 

shopping locally you will not only 

be supporting local skills and 

businesses but you will also be 

helping to reduce food miles and 

traffic, which has benefits for all 

of us. 

Tread Carefully 

Help us to protect our wildlife by 

leaving wild flowers for others to 

enjoy and avoid disturbing birds 

and other animals particularly 

during the breeding season from 

March until June. 

Keep to paths or tracks where 

possible and use stiles or gates, 

remembering to leave gates as 

you find them. 

Don’t start campfires or drop 

cigarettes or matches on the 

moorland and make sure you take 

all litter home with you. 

Dogs are more than welcome in 

many areas but please keep them 

under tight control, preferably on 

a lead.

has been assessed by the AA and/or VisitEngland. Each listing contains the logo of the 

relevant scheme showing the star rating of the establishment on a scale of one to five stars. 

HOTELS are assessed by 

VisitEngland and the AA
