Scarborough 

This is the largest town of the three and has two 

beautiful sandy bays, a good pedestrianised shopping

nightlife with summer shows, theatre productions, 

musical concerts and fine dining. 

Whitby 

The town has undergone some major changes in recent 

years and you can now find quaint cobbled streets full of 

independent retailers sitting alongside a beautiful 

marina which offers a street café atmosphere with lots 

of contemporary cafés, bistros and restaurants 

offering a host of different food choices. 

Filey 

This is the family favourite - with its six miles of 

sandy beach protected by Filey Brigg, a bird 

watchers haven, it is quietly unspoilt. But don’t 

let this fool you, there is a wide variety of shops, 

local entertainment and attractions in the town 

to help make your holiday one to remember.

How to find us 

Car Parking 

There are ample car parking spaces and off-street car parks in Scarborough, 

Whitby and Filey. In Scarborough town centre a pay and display scheme is in 

operation and beyond the chargeable areas, free disc parking is available for a 

limited period. Discs are obtainable from Tourist Information Centres, Council 

Offices, most shops and garages. Overnight visitors are advised to contact their 

accommodation provider for information regarding parking facilities and 

restrictions. Car parking enquiries freephone 0800 0568458. 

Park & Ride 

Scarborough offers a daily, continuous Park & Ride service throughout the year. 

Buses run between 7am–7pm every 12 minutes from Osgodby and Seamer Road 

to the Sea Front and Town Centre. Car parking is free with a nominal charge for 

the bus service. 

People With Disabilities 

The Disablement Action Scheme helps people with limited mobility to make the 

most of their holiday by providing advice on where to eat, where to go and 

wheelchair loan. For further details contact Scarborough and District 

Disablement Action Group 01723 379397 or Whitby and District Disablement 

Action Group 01947 821001. 

Shopmobility 

Shopmobility provides the hire of powered scooters and manual wheelchairs to 

people whose mobility is restricted by permanent or temporary disablement, 

age, accident or illness. The Shopmobility service allows people to make 

independent use of the facilities within Scarborough town centre. Subject to 

availability, we may also be able to provide you with a companion while you’re 

out and about. 

By Rail 

Northern Rail, Virgin and Transpennine 

Express run services to York and Leeds 

from most parts of the country, and from 

both stations there are regular connections 

to Scarborough and Filey. The Esk Valley 

route to Whitby operates from 

Middlesbrough, whilst the Wolds Coast Line 

runs from Hull to Filey and Scarborough.

By Bus 

There are a number of bus operators 

providing services to and around the 

coastal towns and villages, including 

National Express, Arriva, East Yorkshire and 

Coastliner. For further information contact

By Road 

The main route to the Yorkshire Coast is the 

A64, which can be easily accessed from the 

M1, A1, A19, M18 and M62. 

By Air 

The nearest airports are Leeds/Bradford (70 

miles), Teesside (59 miles) and Humberside 

(56 miles), with Manchester and Newcastle 

only 127 and 100 miles away respectively. 

By Sea 

There is a daily ferry service from 

Rotterdam and Zeebrugge to Hull (one hour 

away by road). P&O North Sea Ferries

Anyone who has difficulty in walking – young or old – can hire a mobility 

vehicle. You must be able to control the vehicle of your choice but if you require 

someone to push you around in a wheelchair, we may be able to provide one.

Whitby has always been quietly popular but since 

1997 when the replica ship HM Bark Endeavour 

came sailing into Whitby Harbour on that sunny 

Friday evening in May, it has been rediscovered by thousands 

of visitors who will not now holiday anywhere else! 

Steeped in history, it is the perfect backdrop for hosting special events such 

as Whitby Regatta and Whitby Folk Week during the summer, The Goth 

Weekends in April and October and the many music and arts festivals 

throughout the year. 

With family entertainment available at Whitby Pavilion and good quality 

museums such as the Captain Cook Museum and The Pannett Art Gallery 

to explore, Whitby really does have something for all the famility to enjoy.

iley’s unspoilt town has seen generations of families 

take their annual holiday in this beautiful area of 

Yorkshire’s heritage coast. 

There is much for the family to do, from exploring the rock pools on the 

Filey Brigg, walking along the cliff tops, learning about Filey’s fishing cobles 

that still set out from the beach, visiting the surrounding villages or just 

spending the day having fun building sandcastles and paddling in the sea. 

The pace of life is quieter here but that is not to say that you won’t find bars, 

restaurants and cafes all wanting to tempt you with international cuisine as 

well as offering the more traditional seaside fayre such as fish and chips, 

candyfloss and ice-cream. 

Filey is the ideal place for that ‘get away from it all’ break that you can take at 

any time of the year.

Fancy a day out watching a re-enacted battle at 

Scarborough Castle or Whitby Abbey? Perhaps you 

prefer wandering through a museum and learning 

about Captain Cook at the Memorial Museum in Whitby or 

Neolithic man at The Rotunda in Scarborough, or find out about 

Filey’s local history at the Museum on Queen Street. 

All our towns have a strong fishing heritage and you can wander down to 

the harbour and seafront and still watch the fishing boats landing their 

catch. 

Once evening falls, a visit to one of our local theatres or concert halls is a 

must. You can see a play, musical, summer show or a concert. Newly 

opened in 2010 is Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre which seats 6,000 

people and has already attracted some top artists to perform there. As well 

as seeing famous names, the area has a wealth of local talent who provide a 

variety of holiday entertainment.

Sport has a major part in many people’s lives and there is 

great enjoyment in participating or watching. Here on 

the coast there is lots to see and do from the world class 

Scarborough Cricket Festival to Whitby Regatta and Filey 

Fishing Festival. 

Many of our attractions are sport orientated and you can try your hand at 

pitch and putt, surfing, body boarding, ten pin bowling or indoor and 

outdoor flat and crown green bowls. 

If you prefer something a little bit more energetic you can head to Dalby 

Forest and hire mountain bikes and test your stamina on marked trails 

through the woods or you can travel high up in the trees on the fantastic Go 

Ape Course and zip wire from one side of the valley to the other.

When you are booking your holiday accommodation, you need a rating system you can trust. VisitBritain (Enjoy England) 

(VB) and the Automobile Association (AA) have developed a system for rating accommodation based on quality and range of 

facilities and services. 

All the establishments listed in this publication are members of one of the schemes run by the AA and Visit Britain, and every 

advertisement will contain the logo of one or both of these, showing the star rating of the establishment on a scale of one to five stars.

Treat yourselves with these old Yorkshire recipes - submitted by 

Yorkshire Housewives in 1935 to The Yorkshire Observer..... 

Ilkley Cakes 

Ingredients 

3oz butter 

2oz treacle 

1/2 teaspoonful mixed spice 

Grated lemon rind 

2 tablespoonfuls ground ginger 

1/4lb of flour 

1oz rice flour 

1 egg 

1 teaspoonful baking powder 

2oz brown sugar 

A little milk 

Instructions 

Cream the butter, work in the sugar by 

degrees, add the treacle, spices and a 

little lemon rind, and mix well together. 

Sieve the two kinds of flour and add them 

alternately with the egg and a little milk. 

Beat the mixture until air bubbles begin to 

appear, and add the baking powder and 

the coconut last. Half fill greased tins that 

have been dusted out with flour and sugar 

and bake in a moderate oven for 20 mins. 

Creme Brulee 

Ingredients 

600ml (1 pint) double cream 

5 medium egg yolks 

50g (2oz) caster sugar 

15ml (1 tbsp) water 

4 drops vanilla 

Instructions 

Preheat oven to 170°C: 325°F: Gas 3 

Combine the egg yolks, sugar, cream and 

vanilla. Whisk until combined. Divide 

amongst 6 ramekins place in a bain-marie 

and bake for 40 minutes. Allow to cool. In 

a heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and 

water and cook gently until the sugar 

caramelises. Top each brulee ensuring 

topping isn't too thick. A blowtorch or very 

hot grill may also be used. Brulee may be 

made beforehand, but caramel topping 

may dissolve if made too early.

Ingredients 

500ml (16 floz) milk 

2 large eggs 

2 egg yolks 

25g (1oz) golden caster sugar 

1 cinnamon stick 

Grated nutmeg 

Instructions 

Pre-heat the oven to 170°C: 325°F: Gas 3 

Place the milk and cinnamon stick in a 

saucepan and bring to a boil, then remove 

from the heat. Beat the eggs and extra 

yolks with the sugar, remove the 

cinnamon stick and whisk the milk into 

the egg mixture. Pour into individual 

ramekins and sprinkle with a pinch of 

nutmeg. Place the ramekins in a large 

roasting tin, pour in hot water into the tin 

until reaches half way up the side of the 

ramekins. Bake for 35 minutes.
