Executive
Make learning fun!
When we talk about learning
in a museum or gallery,
what we really mean is
that type of learning which
happens inside us when
we’re doing something
interesting and stimulating
– a change in attitude, a
greater understanding about
ourselves, an increase in
confidence, feeling brave
enough to go off and try
something for ourselves for
the first time. Our events
this season offer you plenty
of opportunities for fun and
exploration; from brand
new exhibitions at the Art
Gallery, and drawing classes
at Woodend, to lantern
parades and guided tours
at the Rotunda.
Inevitably, when a leaflet has
to go to the printers with a
two month lead in time, some
things can’t be confirmed
until nearer the day. One or
two exciting opportunities
presented themselves just
last week, and we didn’t want
to say no just because of a
printer’s deadline! Keep your
eyes open therefore for late
entries which will be flagged

Rotunda
Museum
We are closing the Rotunda
Museum in February but
only for four days.
From the 3 February to the
6 February we are shutting
to allow us to deep clean
and really spruce up the
building and to make sure
our displays are all in
perfect condition.
It is now ten months since
the Museum opened its
doors to the public and since
then we have welcomed a
large number of visitors. It
becomes necessary every
now and then that a well
used public building has the
equivalent of a spring clean.
Still a little early in February
but the building is definitely
ready for our eagle eyed team
to go in and wield feather
dusters and hot, soapy water.
The Rotunda will re-open on
7 February.
From January on we see
the return of activities
and events in the Rotunda
building. On 17 January we
offer guided tours round the
Museum and its displays.
We have events in March
and April where you can
party with plesiosaurs or
discover dinosaurs.
This is a promise of the best
of fun in a sparkling museum
for the whole family.

Scarborough
Art Gallery
This is the season for
celebrating design.
We kick off on Saturday,
17 January and run until
Sunday, 22 February, with
an exhibition, Drawing
on the Dramatic, curated
by Jan Bee Brown and
costume design students
from the School of Visual
and Performing Arts at
Yorkshire Coast College.
This is followed by an
exhibition, East Coasting
(Sat 7 Mar – Mon 4 May),
presenting the work of
Edward Bawden and Eric
Ravilious, who were among
the most accomplished
watercolourists of their
period as well as being
successful commercial
designers, both with
unique styles.
Their commercial clients
included Shell, Fortnum
and Masons, Scarborough’s
Royal & Pavilion Hotels
and Wedgwood.
Bawden and Ravilious were
very close friends whose
skills were honed in the
Design School of the Royal
College of Art. In the early
1920s the craft ethic was
very strong at the college
and Ravilious’s specialism
was wall murals while
Bawden was assigned to
book illustration.
Through their painting and
design Bawden and Ravilious
greatly influenced both
their peers and succeeding
generations of artists and
designers. Mark Hearld is
a York based painter whose
work clearly shows this
influence and adds a current
interpretation of their style.

Activities
It is looking like an
activity packed few
months with Scarborough
Museums Trust.
We have put together a
programme with something
for everyone on the menu.
We are launching our new
guided tours of the Rotunda
on January 17; these free
tours will be given by our
own staff throughout the
year to highlight some of
the Rotunda’s treasures!
On the same day Drawing
on the Dramatic opens at
Scarborough Art Gallery
and we have teamed up
with Yorkshire Coast
College to put on a series of
workshops and events that
explore costume, drawing
and much, much more,
be sure to book a place.
Other highlights include
two family fun days at the
Rotunda, one exploring our
Jurassic dinosaurs and the
other all about our collection
of plesiosaurs – the long
necked reptiles that look
like the Loch Ness Monster!
Staying on the theme of
giants, at Easter we are
running a day at Woodend
Creative Workspace that will
give you the chance to meet
our very own Galapagos
Giant Tortoise; as part of the
year long celebration of the
birth of Charles Darwin this
should be a fun packed day
for all!
Finally if you are a teacher
or work in education be sure

education programme.

Coastival

Starting life outside the
Rotunda Museum
As the first event of its kind
to be staged in Scarborough,
Coastival 2009 – Yorkshire
Goes to the Seaside, will
set the February half term
holiday alight.
Coastival is a three-day
celebration of music, dance,
theatre, film, visual arts,
spoken word and comedy,
and Festival of Light events.
With the support of patrons
Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir
Alan and Lady Ayckbourn,
Coastival is set to be one of
the major arts and cultural
experiences of 2009.
Coastival is a 3 day event
with 21 venues and 66 gigs,
performances, exhibitions,
readings, screenings
and activities.
On Fri 13 Feb two fabulous
FREE events featuring
Scarborough’s Finest will
get Coastival off to the best
possible start; the Lantern
parade starting at the
Rotunda at 5.30pm and
later on a free concert at
the Spa Theatre.
Scarborough Museums
Trust have also teamed up
with Coastival for a selection
of workshops following the
theme of the Drawing on
the Dramatic Exhibition
at the Art Gallery. Check

does have a coffee lounge where you can sit and contemplate
the latest exhibition over a coffee and biscuit.
