here are a variety of valuable tools available for canteen
Tcoordinators throughout Australia to assist them in
promoting the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables and
healthy eating choices in their schools.
ANNUAL CANTEEN COMPETITION (QLD AND NSW)
The annual Fresh For Kids Canteen promotion is designed to
encourage children to embrace healthy eating and make smart
food choices when visiting their school canteen. Last year over
a quarter of a million school children from Queensland and
NSW participated in this successful promotion and canteens
were ordering record quantities of fruit and vegetables.
This year the Fresh For Kids Canteen promotion is planned for
Term 3 and will run in NSW and Queensland from 30 July to
17 August 2007.
Schools in Queensland and NSW will receive a canteen
competition registration form in the coming months. Send
PROMOTING
IN THE SCHOOL CANTEEN
this form back to Brisbane Markets (Queensland schools) or
Sydney Markets (NSW schools) to receive all the information
and materials you need to run this competition in your
canteen.
All Queensland Schools can register for the Queensland Kids
Fresh Net (QKFN) program. This program is a free resource for
Queensland primary schools teaching the bene ts of healthy
eating and an active lifestyle. Visit www.brisbanemarkets.com.
au and follow the links to the QKFN page to download your
registration form. For further information contact the QKFN
team on 07 3379 1062 or email QKFN@brisbanemarkets.
All other states across Australia are able to take advantage
of this valuable website to encourage and promote fruit and
vegetables in the canteen. The comprehensive canteen section
offers valuable tools to assist canteens. Students, teachers
and canteen convenors are able to download colouring in
sheets which can be used to run a ‘mini’ competition in your
school canteen.
Children can colour in the sheets when they
make a healthy food purchase containing
fruits or vegetables and hand the sheet
in for their chance to win a special prize
rewarding them for making a healthy food
choice.
&
For secondary schools or older primary school students, why
not encourage them to design a healthy menu option for the
canteen and provide prizes for healthy menu selections.
www.marketfresh.com.au
This website provides an information booklet for canteen
convenors to download. The booklet provides great ideas and
valuable tools for promoting healthy eating with fun ways to
incorporate fruit and vegetables into canteen menus.
You can search over 400 different fruits and vegetables to
download information and recipes. Canteen convenors can
also take advantage of the canteen section which provides
information about ways to introduce new menu items and
prepare fruits and vegetables so they are appealing to
children.
GO FOR 2 AND 5
Go for 2 & 5 is a Queensland Government initiative to
encourage Queenslanders and Australians in all states to eat
more fruit and vegetables to combat disease, obesity and
poor nutrition. The website features valuable information for
school canteens, showcases recipe and encourages canteens
to run promotions.
Looking after
OUR KIDS
Looking After Our Kids is a video and
handbook resource for school principals,
parent bodies, canteen managers, canteen
assistants and volunteers to help them
understand and comply with the Food
Safety Standards.
veryone working with food has a personal responsibility to handle food safely.
EThis video and handbook information package has been designed to help
people involved with school canteens understand their legal responsibilities.
The video is set in real school canteens and follows the food from delivery to sale.
The practices shown apply to all school canteens whether large or small, new or
old.
This resource, an initiative of FOCiS Inc and funded by Commonwealth Department
of Health and Ageing, was supplied free of charge to all schools in Australia in
2002.
Additional copies may be available from your state school canteen association or
health department, local government or public health unit.
Gluten
Intolerence
luten intolerance is a broad term which
Gincludes all kinds of sensitivity to Gluten. A
small proportion of Gluten intolerant people will
test positive to Celiac Disease test, and so are
called Celiacs (~0.5% of the population). But
most Gluten sensitive people return negative
or inconclusive results upon Celiac testing. The
correct term for these people is Non-Celiac Gluten
Sensitive (NCGS) and may be as many as 15% of
all people – that’s 1 in 7.
Gluten is a highly complex protein that occurs
in four main grains: Wheat, rye, barley and oats.
Gluten is present in all types of Wheat grain like
whole grain wheat, wheat bran, spelt, triticale
and others. This means Gluten is also present in
all baked foods that are made from these grains:
bread, pies, cake, breakfast cereals, porridge,
cookies, pizza and pasta. There are thousands of
processed foods which contain Gluten.
Around ½% of the world’s population is Celiac.
This equates to 1 in 200 people. However new
evidence shows Non-Celiac Gluten intolerance is
around 30 times more prevalent. Up to 15% of
people or 1 in 7 are Gluten Sensitive and suffer
the same symptoms. These are people who test
negative or inconclusive for Celiac Disease.
16
17
Many people suffer from
headaches, mouth ulcers,
weight gain or weight loss,
poor immunity to disease, and
skin problems like dermatitis
and eczema. But the most
common and well-known
Gluten intolerance symptoms are gastro-intestinal
(diarrhea, atulence, bloating etc.).
Gluten intolerance is ‘in the family’, or genetically
inherited. Indicators are European or Anglo-Celtic
ancestry. If you are Gluten intolerant, then up to
10% of your immediate family will also be affected,
even if they don’t have any symptoms.
No drugs or therapies are needed to treat Gluten
sensitivity. The best treatment is to exclude Gluten
for life. This means a Gluten-free diet and the
exclusion of all foods and pharmaceuticals that
contain Gluten. Fortunately thousands of new
Gluten-free products become available every year.
You don’t need a cure, just a different diet. Gluten
sensitivity is just the way some people are - like
having blue eyes or freckles. For your freckles you
stay out of the sun. For your Gluten intolerance,
you avoid Gluten.
Childhood Exercise Programs
n light of the recent
Ihype regarding childhood
obesity, research from the US proves that the bene ts
of children’s exercise programs go beyond good health and
contribute signi cantly to a child’s cognitive development.
Studies show that through the development of neurological
pathways, movement education
programs promote longer attention
spans, increased communication
skills and can even improve a
child’s reading ability. Through its
combination of strength, exibility,
speed, balance and coordination,
gymnastics is reported as being
one of the most comprehensive
‘lifestyle’ exercise programs.
Research also proves that childhood
participation in sport has broad
ranging physical and emotional
bene ts into teenage and adult life
and that parents have an important
role to play. A recent study into
childhood obesity states “children
model behaviours (on their parents)
… and the family activity philosophy
is an important one.”
Encouraged by these ndings the
YMCA of Sydney states, “…this
report discusses the initiation of a
lifelong habit of physical activity, a
long term philosophy of the YMCA.”
TEAM EFFORT
The best thing a parent can do to help their child get and
stay t is to get involved themselves. When children can see
rsthand the way their parents lead an active and healthy
lifestyle, they now have a role model to follow.
JUNIOR WORKOUTS
Parents need to schedule active time, not just computer time
HOME WORK
Exercise should become a routine at home, just like brushing
teeth. Exercises like sit-ups, push-ups and jumping jacks can
easily be done during TV commercial breaks. Such exercises
are also a good way to start the day. Parents can create an
exercise of the day. It will help children get energized before
they head to school.
T I P S
18
He states, “many of
our programs, like Kindergym,
offer both the opportunity for children as young as
18 months to begin to enjoy physical activity and, for parents
to be involved in establishing positive exercise behaviours.”
In addition to encouraging lifelong involvement in sport, further
research suggests long term physical
and mental health bene ts through
early involvement in sport. Studies
into the relationship between
childhood exercise and adult bone
density suggest a positive correlation
between moderate childhood
exercise and healthy bones in
adulthood and later life.
Most parents would recognise the
social and emotional bene ts that
come through participation in sport.
“Kids learn to play and interact with
others whilst learning lifelong skills”
says Shirley Read, Gymnastics
Manager for the YMCA about
Kindergym programs. “Children
thrive on learning new skills and
research (3) proves how much it can
enhance self esteem” she said.
The Kindergym program develops
motors skills, social skills and
cognitive skills. The program is
offered through YMCA Centres
across Australia.
DANCE, COMPETE, PLAY GAMES!
Teach your children the popular dance moves you enjoyed
when you were younger. Learn some new dances yourself
by having the kids show off their cool moves. The laughter
alone is bound to burn some calories. Have a competition.
Whether it’s to see who can hula-hoop the longest or run the
fastest, a friendly competition may be the perfect incentive for
enticing your family off the couch. If your group isn’t all that
competitive, then get them motivated to help a good cause.
Many walking and running events enable you to raise money
for charities. You can do a Google search for events in your
area. Throw a party. It could be at your local roller rink, at
the beach, or in your own backyard. Parties don’t necessarily
cost a lot. A beach party is always fun. Bring a volleyball and
Frisbee—or whatever beach sports your family enjoys—and
prepare to sweat.
