PRESIDENT’S
COMMENT
Terry Calvert
This is the position I’ve always aspired
to achieve and after 20 years of
membership, I believe I can now deliver
a new era forThe Fellowship.
Monday 19th May was a very special day for me – it was the day I received the chain of office
as the President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. This is the position I’ve always
aspired to achieve and after 20 years of membership, I believe I can now deliver a new era for
The Fellowship.
Creative hairdressing is what The Fellowship has always stood for and that’s what I want to
take to another level. The past two Presidents have undertaken a fantastic job throughout the
past four years, Sean Dawson and his successor Steven Goldsworthy, both made radical
changes and pushed The Fellowship to new heights. I intend to not only carry on with their
vision, but add my own personality to the sterling work they have achieved.
My intention is to not only grow the membership but to spread the word by growing events.
Already Alan Stewart from the Rainbow Room has agreed to coordinate a seminar in his
academy in September and Ken Picton is keen to host an event in Wales, both of which will not
only give us a platform to grow in these countries but to add to the junior side of Fellowship
with ClubStar. Take note! I will be looking to all our members to contribute to The Fellowship in
any creative way they feel they can, so do take the time to get in touch and talk over your ideas.
This is my first issue as President and the magazine sees some interesting changes such as a
new feature where I interview Council members – this month it’s my predecessor Steven, with
new contributors who interview amongst others, our very worthy Fellowship Award winners –
this issue it’s Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year, Tim Hartley. As we say farewell and a very big
thank you to Peter Goldsworthy in the role of Fellowship Magazine editor - we welcome him
back as our intrepid 'man-about-town', we also say a big welcome to our Newshound...
Ann Herman under the reign of our new editor Julie Bellinger-Gibb.
So, it’s going to be an exciting time ahead - lets all work together in making The Fellowship the
organisation that we all want to be proud off.
Terry Calvert
President
The Fellowship for British Hairdressing would like to thank all our Business Partners for their invaluable support throughout 2010.
the
interview
president’s
Terry Calvert interviews
outgoing President Steven Goldsworthy
WOW! President of the Fellowship – the position I’ve always wanted. It’s truly an honour to be given this prestigious post by my peers.
I’m relishing the opportunities and challenges that come with this role - or am I? First things first, thought it best to take some time out
with outgoing President, Steven Goldsworthy who has done a wonderful job throughout his two year reign for any tips and hints!
TC Steven, I’ve now officially stepped into
your shoes as the President of the Fellowship
for British Hairdressing – any words of
wisdom?
SG As President it’s quite like becoming
CEO of this amazing company overnight
having been promoted from the role of
office junior! As President you are the
figurehead of the organisation so it’s
important to be present at as many events
as humanly possible and to be involved in
absolutely everything that The Fellowship
does. Due to the fabulous opportunities
now available to Fellowship members and
the amazing work of the Events Committee
- your diary can become choc-a-bloc with
dates – sometimes up to three Fellowship
happenings on the same day – so your first
lesson is learn to delegate! Get to know your
fantastic council members and events team
plus the host of Fellowship members –
and accept their help wherever you can!
TC Thanks for that Steven I most certainly
will. I’m still astounded by the generosity of
council members with their time and
knowledge and the warm welcome I have
received from each. Every President goes into
their reign with a clear idea of what they can
bring to The Fellowship – what do you think
you have brought to The Fellowship table in
the past two years?
SG To be honest two years is not long
enough to make a big enough mark – but
it’s a time of implementation of ideas.
For the first six months you are finding your
feet with the help of your colleagues and by
the time eighteen months are up you are
pretty confident on the way to go – then it’s
over! Having said that I’d like to think that I
WWW.FELLOWSHIPHAIR.COM 2 WWW.CLUBSTARHAIR.CO.UK

have helped to make the Fellowship an
organisation that is more approachable.
As a member for 20 years – I have always
been quite passionate about the
organisation and it was an absolute honour
for me to be President. It’s in my nature to
always be hands-on and involved in
everything and I hope that I will be
recognised as having done just that. I took
up where my predecessor Sean Dawson left
off – he’d done a fantastic job at building
multi-branding sponsorship – and I’ve
added to that. I’ve also encouraged open
dialogue between council members,
fellowship members and business partners
and the media. Being non-London based I
felt it was also extremely important to offer
more regionalised events – and I’m pleased
that these are up and running and proving
a success.
TC I’ve certainly noticed a complete
turnaround in the past five years with regard
to media coverage and the general branding of
The Fellowship. I think the opportunities it
offers members are absolutely amazing -
there is something tailored for every
hairdresser. You also run your own salon
group, Goldsworthy’s – and even opened up
your first franchise salon whilst President –
how do you manage to mix your own very
successful business with the business of
The Fellowship?
SG I’m very fortunate to have great
partners, PR and family who knew that
these two years would be extraordinarily
busy. I ensured that I had their full support
before I started and as you say, even
managed to expand my own business and
in the midst of the madness did the HABB
charity bike ride through Vietnam and
Cambodia! Hairdressing has never been
a 9 – 5 business – and I’m a firm believer of
if you don’t put the work in... It was quite
usual for me to be catching up with council
members at 9pm on a Sunday night – it
really can consume you 24/7 so you do have
to discipline
yourself that
you do take
I’m a GREAT LISTENER and
a firm believer that all negatives
can be turned into POSITIVES!
time out - for
both yourself
and your family.
It’s all quite
strange for me
at the moment
as I slipped and
fractured my wrist and this has generally
made me STOP! I’ve never been so
frustrated in my life! Seriously though
everyone that works with The Fellowship
does it because they want to. They are
committed to making it the best
organisation a hairdresser can join and in
doing so you have their undivided and
loyal support.
TC It obviously helps when your family are
very much a part of your business – my wife
runs one of our companies and it does mean
that we do get to see each other! Looking
back, what has been your favourite memory
of your Presidency?
SG My first President’s night. Held at
Banqueting House, Whitehall – the theme
was Cirque du Coiffure – and I was
supported by 14 of the biggest names in
hairdressing who each presented a model.
The memory will remain with me forever
and a day – a truly iconic moment!
TC Your second one wasn’t bad either!
Gibson Hall proved the perfect setting and it
was a truly amazing evening – I’ve already
started thinking about what I’m going to do
next year! It all gets a bit competitive!
What, then has been your worst memory?
SG That has to be my weakest link which
is that fact that I absolutely abhor
confrontation! At various council meetings
there have been ‘political fallouts’ over
certain situations which I must say tested
me! Having said that, I’m a great listener
and a firm believer that all negatives can be
turned into positives! In my case – I can
now cope with anything that’s thrown
at me!
TC Your Presidency only lasts two years
which like a new business does not give you
a lot of time to make your mark. What work
would you like to see continued?
SG One of my visions was to get
The Fellowship brand recognised in the
consumer world. This is beginning to
happen but it’s a slow process and I hope
that you can build upon what has been
done. Also that the open dialogue and
transparency between business partners
remains and they continue to get true value
for their financial commitment – without
their support The Fellowship would be
unable to deliver with the same quality.
TC I’m on to it! What will you do with
all your new-found free time?
SG Refocus on my business and start
looking for the next franchise site so we can
continue to grow the Goldsworthy’s brand
and to be seen as a hairdresser again! I will
of course always be there for The Fellowship
in every possible sense because it’s always
been there for me. Hand on heart – I’ve got
a lot to thank it for over the years – which
leaves me to say Terry – I wish you the best
of luck as the new President and to enjoy
every minute as I did.
TC Thanks Steve. With a new decade in full
swing, I’m really looking forward to a new
chapter – not only for The Fellowship,
but also for the country and the economy.
I strongly believe we have left the worst of
the economic climate behind us and look
forward to an optimistic and exciting few
years. It’s been the worst economic period I
can recall over the last 50 years, but I’m now
very positive about the future of hairdressing.
MEDIA MATTERS
JANE MACARTHUR
Currently the editor of Hairflair
& Beauty, Jane Macarthur has
been a journalist in the hair
industry for the last decade
working on both the Blackhair
and Hairflair & Beauty titles.
Jane how did you become the editor of Hairflair & Beauty?
I was actually on maternity leave from editing Blackhair magazine,
when the opportunity to edit H&B arose.
Had you always had a keen interest in hairdressing?
I love everything creative and hairdressing is a wonderfully artistic
aspect of our daily lives. As a sixth-former my friends and I were in
love with the trendy Toni & Guy and Sassoon styles, and would
always travel into the West End to take part in model nights or get a
cheap n' chic cut at the T&G Academy off Oxford Street. I didn't care
how short my hair was and the wackier, the better! In my
mid-twenties I toyed with the idea of becoming a hairstylist, but my
Mum talked me out of it - she said I was a dreadful conversationalist,
so wouldn't be any good at making my clients feel comfortable in
the chair!
The Fellowship magazine reaches hairdressers all over the UK – what is
the best advice that you can offer to them so that they are able to get
their work published in your Hairflair & Beauty? (i.e. what is the
criteria for photographs etc.)
At H&B we love receiving photographic work from hairstylists
around the world. Despite my years in the industry, I'm always so
excited when a new hair collection arrives and can't wait to open the
images. Fabulous hair photos inspire us hair and beauty journos to
write reams! Big glossy prints used to be the thing, but nowadays we
prefer to receive collections on cd (jpeg or tiff files, at 300dpi).
The more information that is provided with a collection, the better,
so a brief explanation of how the styles were achieved, as well as
full credits, is wonderful!
What do you think of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing?
The Fellowship is the lynchpin of British Hairdressing. It inspires,
educates and supports, and provides a centre of intelligence, if you
will, for stylists not just in this country, but worldwide.
How do your editorial team decide what to focus on in each issue?
At the moment we tend to be led by celebrity looks, as well as what
we see on the street. Whilst it is wonderful to be in a position where
we can predict the next trend, the proof is in the pudding, so it's the
styles, cuts and colours that are embraced outside the photo studio
that mean more to our readers. We try to give our readers the
confidence to go for the looks they really like, to trust in their
hairstylist, as well as giving them the know-how to recreate styles
themselves.
How many issues of Hairflair & Beauty are there annually and where
are they retailed?
We publish six issues a year and retail in some supermarkets,
WHSmiths and many independent newsagents.
We publish the Fellowship for British Hairdressing Year Book which
includes the contacts of all our members – do you, will you use this to
refer to?
Of course!
How do you pick your covers?
We've been using celebrities on our covers for some time now, so we
look for current favourites who are wearing their hair in seasonally
appropriate styles. From there we narrow it down to whose hair is
most desirable at that moment.
Do you commission photographic work?
We regularly invite prominent hairstylists to shoot collections and
editorial images at our in-house studio.
Whose work in the hairdressing industry do you admire?
Anyone who has made a name for themself in the industry has had
to work so hard to do so, so I have great admiration for all those
individuals. However, I particularly like the work of Philip Bell at
Ishoka, it's what I would call 'cut-glass', and the finesse of
Errol Douglas's creations is truly breathtaking. Mark Leeson is
also a leading light in my book...
Highlights in your Fellowship Calendar?
The Fellowship Awards Luncheon – features very highly – it’s
two-fold not only an extremely enjoyable event in the middle of the
day – and secondly, being in the first week of December – set’s us all
into the spirit of Christmas!
Who cuts your hair?
Oh, I wish you hadn't asked me this! I've been lucky enough to have
my hair cut by some of the best of British hairstylists over the years,
but I've been growing my hair for a long time and no one has
touched it since I went off on maternity leave - a whole year ago!
REVIEW
FELLOWSHIP
THE FELLOWSHIP AWARD
WINNER’S POWER NIGHT
BY SAMANTHA GROCUTT
Wow’s, Annabella Lwin. To complete his talk, Sean presented a
model showing the new direction of hob’s creativity and a little taster
of what the industry can expect this coming year.
The owner of seanhanna – Group Salon of the Year winner,
Sean Hanna, was then invited on to stage by Fellowship Chairman,
Frank Shipton, and shared with the audience his history in growing
his salon into the group it is today, the tribulations that commonly
accompany an expanding group, alongside his future plans such as
the imminent opening of a 9th salon in Bristol and a major group
rebranding. With an honest and direct chat, the audience were really
able to share in the development and success of this winning salon
group.
The evening closed with three of The F.A.M.E. team members –
Ross Taylor, Kim Rance and Benjamin Moth sharing their thoughts,
activities and plans for 2010. With one shoot already undertaken with
Errol Douglas MBE direction, another with Sacha Mascolo due in the
summer, the team reeled off the inspiring names they have spent
time being mentored with and the long list is still to come. With the
future of British hairdressing in their hands, the audience could
really see the enthusiasm and energy coming from this Team.
Following the annual Fellowship AGM which saw the new 2010
President, Terry Calvert being voted in for the forthcoming 2 years,
Fellowship members were invited to attend a Power Night with the
winners from the 2009/2010 Fellowship Awards.
The evening started with a welcome from new President Terry
Calvert who then invited Edward Hemmings from Alan d Academy
to interview Salon of the Year winner, Robert Masciave from
Metropolis. Sharing his insight into entering awards, team morale
and then a fun and enthusiastic overview of his time as a young
hairdresser in France to his move to the UK to what he hoped would
be a lesson in punk hairstyling – his understanding of all that was
cool of British culture at that time! Robert certainly kept the audience
entertained with his fast paced story telling.
The audience could really see the
enthusiasm and energy coming
from this team
Past Fellowship President, Sean Dawson from hob salon and winner
of Fashion Focus Image of the Year next presented to the audience.
Talking through his inspiration and passions in creating a winning
collection – from his 80’s icons Debbie Harry to Grace Jones, and
finally revealing the winning image as an homage to Bow Wow
INSPIRATIONAL PR DAY
BY CAROLINE ASH
The Fellowship for British Hairdressing presented the first PR and
Branding Inspirations Workshop which was a huge success.
Organised by Harriet Evans from Flint Consultancy and held in the
Goldwell Academy, in London’s Mayfair, the delegates received
inspiration and informative presentations from the hair industry.
WWW.FELLOWSHIPHAIR.COM 5 WWW.CLUBSTARHAIR.CO.UK

Harriet started the day with a brain storming session on Why PR?
The delegates working in small groups were inspired and motivated
and each group presented a fantastic understanding of the subject.
Jacki Wadeson from JWPR then presented Growing Your Brand
detailing successful examples from her own top end list of clients
including Aveda, Denman Brushes and Royston Blythe.
A press release workshop then followed led by Harriet Evans. After
taking in all the information each group then wrote and presented a
different press release. All received constructive feed back from
Harriet and the other PRs.
After lunch Julie Bellinger-Gibb presented The Road to Fame and
two of her clients joined her to illustrate their fantastic relationship
and how PR has helped them to grow within the industry.
Paul Hawes from Review who has two salons in Hampshire,
explained the history of the PR and branding of his salon and how
winning local awards had resulted being successful nationally
including Salon Team of the Year at both Hairdressers Journal
Business Awards and Creative Head’s Most Wanted!
Chris Appleton then explained after successfully being a member of
the F.A.M.E. Team how Julie now helped him to meet his objectives with
his personal pr after winning BBC’s Young Hairdresser of the Year.
Following this Julie Allen from Joolspr went through the most ‘asked
questions’ when taking on a PR for the first time.
Louise Wood from Louise Wood pr presented on ‘Making Waves
with Local PR’ and used her award winning client Barrie Stephen as
an example of how successful this can be. She covered newspapers,
magazines, tv and radio. Harriet concluded this fantastic day by
giving the delegates a list of 10 top tips for getting started in PR.
Kai and Jenny Wan, who own 2 salons P Kai Hair in Peterborough
said, “It was a fantastic day, the information was so valuable and we have
learned so much. We loved the presentations and now feel comfortable about
contacting them and sending in our stories and collections. We also feel
really confident about starting our pr, initially with all this information we
will try it ourselves, and if necessary appoint a PR at a later date. Our
improved understanding of the business means we will get so much more out
of it now!”
Our improved understanding of the
business means we will get so much
more out of it now
Jacqueline Henri from Jacqueline Henri Salon in Portsmouth said:
“I knew literally nothing about PR before today, so to me the information has
been priceless. It was a privilege to have all those fantastic PRs in one room.”
POWER OF
PRESENTATION
BY RICHARD DARBY
From the incredibly popular ‘stage fright’ basic Presenters Course,
to the more targeted and advanced skills areas, Fellowship
Presenters’ Courses show creatively successful stylists exactly
what it takes to share their ideas with fellow hairdressers in an
educational, entertaining and inspirational way.
They were all able to speak with
renewed confidence and pace and
essentially deliver a good hair
presentation
This year's presentation course was again hosted by the London
Wella World Studio and was attended by 6 students. I am pleased to
say that this 2 day course was invaluable to all those who
participated. Everyone had similar concerns with regards to
presenting and they all lacked confidence and being able to put a
presentation together.
Wella’s talented Pauline Vitale and Maria Carrubba did an excellent
job as usual in delivering this course and by the end of the 2 days all
the students had grown in confidence, learned how to add structure
to a presentation and learnt how to deliver different presentations.
They were all able to speak with renewed confidence and pace and
essentially deliver a good hair presentation. Some of the students are
hoping to use their new found skills on forthcoming Members’
Nights and on stage at Salon International."
FELLOWSHIP WORKSHOP
AT KEN PICTON – CARDIFF
BY FRANK SHIPTON
Small scale, regionally based workshops designed to offer an
intimate group real in-depth, one-on-one education and training
with Fellowship masters. These events are usually held in a
member’s salon or training academy. Fellowship Workshops
enshrine The Fellowship’s philosophy of freely sharing ideas and
core skills more successfully than any other events.
The multi-award winning salon Ken Picton salon in Cardiff Bay
played host to the Fellowship Workshop where Ken Picton’s
Michael De Valle was joined by Lara Johnson, Julian Clark from
Goldsworthy’s, and Peter Prosser and Christine from Peter Prosser
giving the 9 attendees a fabulous opportunity to get up close and
personal.
VEGAS
BY PETER GOLDSWORTHY
The volcanic cloud didn’t stop The Fellowship’s
‘flight’ of fancy to Vegas. However this could not
be said for some of the folk who had booked
tickets but were stranded abroad, (including
Chancellor Mark Creed). The upside was that
some folk who were going to be away were still at
home so were able to take up some of the tickets
newly available – keeping Carol and Denise in the
Fellowship office very busy indeed!
Presid
On our arrival at the magnificent Gibson Hall
in the City of London we all enjoyed a
fabulous champagne reception in a choice of
venues, the beautiful garden room or the
neighbouring very sunny garden.
As dinner was announced we each made our
way through to the celebrated hall where we
were greeted in true Las Vegas style by a ratpack
repertoire from a very convincing
Sinatra and later found ourselves in a room
full of rockers as we were entertained with
an Elvis tribute.
Next up on the stage was outgoing President
Steven Goldsworthy who recapped on his
two year Presidency and in doing so thanked
all the folk who had supported him
throughout. Steven also invited everyone to
join him in the Fellowship Casino after
prizes which had been donated by our
‘partners’ included 2 tickets from
Schwarzkopf to the British Hairdressing
Wella TrendVision final, from ghd 4 pairs of
their brand new brightly coloured
special welcome to some of the past
Presidents present which included Peter and
Later in the evening two magicians appeared
on stage and invited back ‘old’ President
Steven Goldsworthy, whereupon they
stretched a large piece of black material
within seconds they unwrapped the ‘parcel’
which had magically turned into new
Terry Calvert remained on stage to outline
his Presidential policy and plans which
although ever mindful of his responsibilities
has promised to include some fun.
F.A.M.E . TEAM
F.A.M.E.TEAM DIARY
BY BEN MOTH
No it wasn’t April fool- a date with my
hero – the man himself – Tim Hartley.
He turned the tables and flattered us
almost immediately by giving us the
incredible opportunity to prep his three
models with colour!
We went through the opportunities
discussing angles in which he was aiming to
achieve with each of the models – leaving
absolutely nothing to chance! It was so
hands on – it was absolutely incredible!
Tim was a hard taskmaster but so deserves
his iconic status with his fabulous twist on
everything. The four of us valued this
fantastic opportunity to get up close and
personal with the man himself.
BY KIM RANCE
For any hairdresser I think at some point in
their career they want to go on a Vidal
Sassoon training day. Vidal Sassoon is
legendary everyone knows about Sassoons
whether they had their hair cut there or
trained there or even remember when it
first started out.
So today was our lucky day we got a taste of
the classic Vidal Sassoon work. I had never
had the good fortune to meet Bruce
Masefield, art director for Sassoon’s before
but took an instant liking to him especially
as he said this day was part one of two!
Our first day was spent going back to basics
with Bruce – he was keen for us to show
him our skills and was quite adamant that
we would not be moving on to the more
advanced cutting skills until we had each
perfected the classics.
The classics in themselves are the show
stoppers. Every hairdresser appreciates a
fantastic bob and that’s exactly was Bruce
demonstrated for us. He masterfully crafted
a simple but oh so elegant bob from long to
short.
The four of us simply watched and
observed spellbound until it was our turn,
when Bruce took us patiently through our
cuts step by step. We learned the Sassoon
art of wrap drying and were introduced to
their abc education which really explained it
all to us. What’s more all the models we
worked with were so very happy with the
results.
BY OLIVE TUCKER
Our day with Patrick Cameron was
amazing ....... he is undoubtedly the
maestro of long hairdressing. Throughout
the morning he demonstrated his hair
artistry – making everything look so easy.
His advice, openness – hints and tips when
it came to both long hairdressing and the art
of presentation – of which he is the best
were all well received by myself and the
team.
Patrick turned the tables on us in the
afternoon and it was our turn to create the
styles demonstrated in the morning. What
could have sent us all into panic mode was
soon defused by Patrick’s articulate
step-by-step guidance all the way –
resulting in an afternoon of unrivalled fun.
Thank you Patrick – you are a Superstar!
ROSS TAYLOR
What a coup! Our wonderful manager
Bruno Marc Giamattei managed to secure
an amazing day for us with the legendary,
iconic Robert Lobetta!
When we were asked at the beginning of
the year who we would most like to work
with – Robert appeared on all our lists –
recognised as being one of the most
imaginative and passionate hairdressers.
On his arrival Robert explained that we
were going to conduct a five-way
conversation – it was his aim not only to
give – but to receive information
throughout the day. Starting the day –
Robert told us the amazing story of how he
first became a hairdresser and the journey
he has taken in order to achieve what he
has today, being extremely frank about the
highs and lows along the way that has
made him who he is. Robert even joined us
for lunch which just shows what a down-toearth
guy he is. As promised the tables were
then turned on to us and Robert
interviewed each member of the F.A.M.E.
Team honing on our specialist skills and
where we felt we would like to be in the
next few years. This was no ordinary
interview – and completely opened up our
eyes to everything as he introduced a new
spin to the way we work, explaining how
we must find ourselves and be prepared to
take risks along the way.
It was an extremely interesting exercise and
listening to my fellow members of the
F.A.M.E. Team talking about their hopes and
aspirations made our bond of friendship
and comraderie even stronger. When all was
done – we all had so much to think and talk
about – and totally blown away with
inspiration! Thank you Robert!
PROJECT X
Shooting
their first
collection
BY HARRIET EVANS
The Project X-ers recently enjoyed an
exciting and inspiring day at the Bedhead
Studios in London shooting their first-ever
photographic collection as a group.
Hosted by the TIGI team and directed by
their mentors Rob Eaton and Karine
Jackson, the students worked on an
ambitious editorial-style shoot, styling six
models and two looks on each. The blonde
collection, shot in black and white and using
a variety of session-styling techniques, will
provide a stunning showcase collection for
Project X.
While at the studio, the guys got to meet and
be photographed with icon Anthony
Mascolo, and had their own PR portrait shots
done by top TIGI photographer Ben Cooke
who was shooting the models that day.
“The day went brilliantly and the results are
going to be great. It was good to see the team
working together so well on their first group
shoot as working as a big group can often be
quite stressful. The day ran very smoothly and
the collection will have a very edgy modern
young feel” said Robert Eaton Project X
leader.
Karine Jackson, agreed: “The shoot was
fantastic! The team all craving more and more
information and absorbing it like sponges. They
worked really well together and tried out all the
techniques with an open mind. Using crimpers,
tongs, hair pieces and wigs they really stretched
their creativity and in return produced some
fabulous images. It was great to see such a young
enthusiastic team gel so well.”
COLOUR PROJECT
TEACHING
EXPERIENCE
The Fellowship Colour Project provided a double whammy of teaching
experience for the students to soak up at Wella World Studios.
The morning began with Bruno Marc and Carly Roberts from
Marc Antoni Salon demonstrating their stunning cut and colour
collections whilst conversing with the students on technique and
colour application in detail. The ever comical Bruno put his no
nonsense spin on the day with a patter of humour and erudition.
After lunch the afternoon became a true learning curve with Billi
from The Chapel; One of Amanda Dickers’ protégés. Billi and her
assistants got down to the day in true Chapel style with playful
interaction demonstrating their styles of colouring whilst creating
awareness and understanding regarding the roots of their creativity.
The students thought processes were truly transformed by
connecting colour patterns and haircuts collectively.
Colour Project student Lee from Pearson Clarke salon remarked,
“This has been a really inspiring day, I have learnt a lot and found the day
really motivating.”
innovator
interview with an
After three decades leading the creative
direction of Vidal Sassoon, current
Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year,
Tim Hartley, is now a liberated man
whose relentless creativity continues
to propel him to awesome heights.
Recent years have seen a new energy and direction from
Tim Hartley, whose creativity defined iconic eighties and nineties
hair. Now his own man and loving to work with people who have
a true passion for hair, Tim can choose the collaborations he wants
to get involved with which reflect his creative motivation.
Tim’s talents are in demand by the likes of L’Oréal Professionnel,
Aveda, Davines and MTV and he travels the world presenting hair
shows in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and Asia. But London
remains his preferred end destination; it’s where he lives,
his remarkable Bauhaus-inspired 60s architect-designed home
providing the serenity needed to replenish his energies and
stimulate his creativity.
With an unquenchable thirst for the new, a passion for fresher and
finer burning brighter than ever before, Tim’s advice to others is
simple: “Be open-minded, seek out diversity, find a great mentor,
work hard and love what you do – every day.”
‘‘
I present my collections all over the world and a country can
“I have a natural interest in trends and the most bizarre things can
trigger my creative thoughts. Take the recent Tom Ford movie for
example. Cinematic style inspires me anyway, but that film, which
evoked a moment in time – 60s California – was all about beauty;
every frame was flawless, showing an idealistic, purely perfect
world. It made me think that as hairdressers, it’s what we try to do
for our clients – create their ideal.
So my new collection is going to be pure and uncomplicated,
a design classic, monochromatic and simple, the opposite to my last
collection which was very styled-up and based on colour, looks going
from blonde to black and all stages in-between.
sometimes take you by surprise. The audiences in Poland were the
last thing I expected; very fashion forward, conceptual and cool.
Passionate people inspired by amazing art influences, but then,
as Berlin is only three hours away, I get that.
And the hotel I stayed at in Poland blew me away; it was as fantastic
as one I’d stay at in New York. Its design approach was minimalist –
60s Italian lighting which always gives a space-age vibe and
George Nelson USA influenced chairs; and the bedrooms were either
all black or all white, stylish and brilliantly furnished. I opted for a
white bedroom – very Barbarella!
Travelling as much as I do, hair wise, I like to think we Brits still lead
the way, but the danger is unless we continuously improve
standards, everything starts to look the same. To overcome this,
we must acknowledge and harness youthful creativity. I don’t think
we give enough exposure to young ideas and the mainstream names
tend to dominate too much.
And there are pockets of great creativity in Europe, mostly in the
northern hemisphere – Poland, Germany and Scandinavia – where
there are mad, cool people just mental about hair, so we do have
competition there.
But luckily I have seen salon groups in the UK where the focus is on
creativity – Electric in Brighton and Westrow in Leeds for example –
fantastic teams who are keen to work harder, do better. Working with
young people gives you a lot back and somehow we have to get that
idea out there to secure our creative future.”
It’s an emotional business, hairdressing, because we put our heart
and soul into it. And I have to say I was so emotional, overwhelmed
on being announced Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year. Being
recognised by your own is quite something.
I didn’t have a clue I was going to get it; Ann Herman invited me to
the Fellowship Luncheon months before and I had so much on my
mind, I didn’t even begin to think there was anything behind the
invite. I was overcome, recalling early days of being at Fellowship
dos at the Café de Paris and Vidal being a Patron of Honour –
it really was quite overwhelming to be honoured in that way.
And I must say the actual award itself is an object of beauty, so much
so it’s in my living room as opposed to other awards which are in the
garage! I am very touched to have the accolade and began to realise
the strength it brought me when I found myself emailing all my
clients to share the news of my success.”
as this will now be 9 issues. I am delighted that my replacement is none other than
chair·man [chair-muhn] – noun
meaning the presiding officer of a
meeting, committee, board, etc. =
is elected as Chair of the main Council and, in addition
to chairing meetings, oversees the practical, financial
and day-to-day management of The Fellowship.
The Chairman’s role is to provide stability and unity
and to help carry out the decisions of the Council
and the policy direction of the President.
Since the last AGM we have been working hard on the
reorganisation of The Fellowship and we are near the point of
becoming a Company, Limited by Guarantee, a position that will
financially safeguard The Fellowship and all its members. Each
member will receive an invitation to subscribe to the new company,
and I urge you to attend to this invitation as soon as is possible to
aid Carol Spencer, at The Fellowship office, to make the transition
to the new Company as smooth as is possible. Carol has worked
extremely hard with this matter, as well as her other Fellowship
duties, and I thank her for her loyalty and endeavours on the
Fellowship’s behalf.
Over the past year, The Fellowship has held many notable and
exciting events, including Power Night, Masterclass! in London and
in Exeter, Presenter’s Course, regional and London based workshops,
as our main features of education, all of which were highly regarded.
None of these would have been as successful without the support of
all our Business Partners, Diamond, Gold, Silver and Bronze, our
highly skilled, talented and motivated membership, and of course
the organisational skills of the Events Committee, under the
guidance of our Show Coordinator, Ann Herman. I thank them all on
your behalf as well as Denise Simkins, at The Fellowship Office for
her diligence and patience with us, sometimes disorganised
hairdressers! Also, special thanks to Catalyst Consultancy who are
now producing our flyers.
Project X has gone from strength to strength under the much
travelled and hard working eye of Robert Eaton. Aaron Blondell
offered much support and our best wishes go out to him for a
speedy recovery from illness. Their efforts, along with all members
working with this project are very much appreciated by The
Fellowship.
The newly instigated Colour Project led by Mark Creed, Jo O’Neill
and assisted by Tanya Hennessy, provided much needed education
in this area of our business, with their expertise being showcased at
the fabulous Colour Night. Thank you to all concerned.
ClubStar, our initiative for younger members, in its infancy has
grown through the foresight of Nigel Sillis, with Simon Shaw
expanding this idea by means of an exciting calendar specifically
aimed at the youthful membership. Their numbers have increased
significantly because of this, as well as the drive of the ClubStar
Secretary, Emma Bushell, at The Fellowship office, which augers well
for the future.
Over the past year I have been hard at work negotiating with our
licensed counterpart in Australia, and I am very sad to say, that due
to the intransigence and personal conflicts in their camp, the
Fellowship for British Hairdressing has not renewed their license for
the foreseeable future.
World Hair Ltd., despite the efforts of some of its Directors, is
proving to be an unproductive organisation, and I aim to resolve this
situation within the next 12 months, if reconfirmed as your
Chairman.
The Fellowship has received many column inches in our trade press
as well as the consumer media, which in no small way is down to
our Fellowship ‘Angels’, our voluntary PR’s, Julie Allen,
Julie Bellinger-Gibb, Harriet Evans and Sally Learmouth.
This year, as you know is election year, no not that one! Far more
important – the Fellowship Council, as well as President. So I would
like to thank those members who are retiring their posts, for all their
appreciated efforts namely, Dawn Adams, nee Bryant for her
magnificent F.A.M.E. Team(s) that broke new boundaries during her
tenure and Peter ‘Scoop’ Goldsworthy for providing us with the
glossy, informative Fellowship magazine, as well as being Trustee of
this organisation. Thank you!
Thanks are also due to our main image providers for covering all the
Fellowship initiatives – Tony Hennessy, William Sparacia and
Ray Bird.
Last, but definitely not least – I personally want to thank our
outgoing President, Steven Goldsworthy, for everything that he has
brought to The Fellowship over the past 2 years. Steven has worked
tirelessly behind the scenes as well as on The Fellowship stage –
throughout which he has been fantastic to work with. Good luck and
heartfelt thanks. I now look forward to working and supporting our
incoming President Terry Calvert.
